SHORT is relative to the amount of storyline. I could spend 20 hours scanning planets and claim the game is longer. There's what, 4 storyline missions? The game is long time-wise, but short compared to story. Perhaps that's a better explanation. I am not complaining because I was happy with it anyway, but imagine what it would be with 4 MORE storyline missions on top of all these squad missions and the side missions. Then we'd start to get close to epic.

How is it 4 storyline missions?
You had the first mission. Getting Archangel, Mordin, Tali, Jack, Grunt, Samara, Thane, Tali, Legion. You had the Horizon colony, the derelic reaper and the suicide mission.
Plus 10 loyalty missions that are varried and fun.
I wouldn't call it short. Mass Effect 1 was shorter storywise.

I was disappointed with the length, not gonna lie. When I was more than 50% through the main quest after a measly six hours I began to feel less than enthused. Granted, I hadn't dealt with any upgrades or side quests yet, but the main storyline felt too short to me. Even including all the squad sidequests, which seem necessary to me rather than like a sidequest.

I beat the game with 4 planet scan missions, about 80% of the upgrades (all the necessary, plus the ones I stumbled upon during questing) all the loyalty missions and I was at level 25 with about 500k credits. Felt like with two discs there should have been a LOT more content.

49 hours on my first playthrough. People who call this game short are rushing it.

Not quite. I was around 33-35 hours with 100% completion, but I keep cruising around afterwards hoping to hear more dialogue from my squadmates when I took them to the major planets. The worst part is when the game ends...and you just want to keep going right where you left off and jump into ME3 and continue right on being your Shepard. Can anyone point me to good FF? I don't know how I am going to make it for two years...

See what you're doing there? You're including the squad missions. They're all about gathering your squad.

The storyline is yes the very first one, escaping form the base.
Second one to examine the colony.
Third one to get the IFF.
Fourth to defend your ship.
Fifth to assault the base and win the game.

That's not much as far as story goes. I already said I am not complaining but there's a whole lot missing to make it epic.

There would have to be a Citadel larger than a hallway of a supermarket.
There would have to be a Illium larger than a back-alley of 21 jump street.

And we're not talking about Mass Effect 1, it's not even up for comparison. We're talking about Mass Effect 2 and the Mass Effect 2 storyline.

What you do in this game is gather your squad. Now I am NOT saying that is bad, but I AM saying I would want more storyline focused missions.

I agree with kaothic_drake, with that massive size they gave this game - there really should be more content to this game... Seriously, Red Faction: Guerilla is just 1 DVD game, and that **** is waaaaaaaaaay bigger in compare.... Im justsaying, its kinda pointless to make a game on 2 x DVD9 when the content suggests it could really be minimized down to no more than a simple DVD5 disc installation...

The first disc felt too short to me. It's like I was on it for 30 minutes then changed discs.

My ME1 100% completion savegame was about 31 hours; My ME2 100% completion savegame was about 42 hours. I was happy with the length

The downside of the quality of content is that it's hard to make it longer.

Diablo 2 for a poor example. had (compared to ME) low quality content, but a metric ton of it.

yea not enough side quests....that was my favorite part of ME1 was decrypting a computer and finding out about some Geth gathering or something going on in another system that needs attention.

It's not short. Just bothered me that almost the whole game is just getting teammates though. I still love the game

I think I can sum it up better now than before: The game storyline is short, but the content made it feel long and rewarding.

My first play through was over 50 hours so I didn't find it too short at all. Just about right.

I used to think that the longer the RPG the better it was but I think Dragon Age changed my view on that. It was a bit too long -- I didn't even finish my second play through.

i think the main thing is the lack of a mako and the ability to explore worlds and do those kinds of side missions we had in ME1. In me 1, i would do a story world, then go off looking for a lost squadron or cracking down on cerberus bases, and that would take me a long time...

OP, first, your argument is riddled with fail............how would YOU take on the collectors WITHOUT any crewmembers' assistance? it's all tied in together, oh WAIT!! you could write A BIGGER version? PLEASE DO!! I really don't appreciate, having to play for 40 hours and it take, well 40 hours, could you compact that, while yer at it?

I agree and disagree. Building the team is a part of the storyline.

That said, all of the squadmate missions focused on their own issues and, minus your character and the Cerberus employees, none of the squad are there to take down the Collectors. They're there because of Shepard. Hell, Mordin is the only character I can recall who has a moment where stopping the Collectors becomes personal. If gathering the team focused a little less on Shepard and a little more on the threat, I do think those missions wouldn't have felt as episodic and detached.

Took me 40 hours, about twice as long as ME1 took

Still short by RPG standards though. I prefer my RPGs to be 80-100 hours.

ME1 story:

try for human specter, discover Geth and Saren. (1st mission)

Went on to prove Saren was bad.(small mission -Tali)

Went on to track Saren. (2-3 big mission)

Found out about Reapers and Protheans (ilos @ Vimirte or something)

Defeat Saren and soverign. (Citadel end mission)

ME2 story.

Reaper coming/collector surrogates (background story. no mission)

start to collect teammates (2 batches.. but essentially same part of the story)

Find way to attack collectors (IFF mission)

Attack collectors. (suicide mission)

That's how I view it anyways.

OK, im at 35 Hours and I have officially done everything (at least as far as missions and assignments goes) and am now waiting on DLC. Its short, and its a shame. The game is epic and so damn well done. I honestly think the lack of the Mako missions makes the time difference seem as much as it does. Also, i would have liked to see more massive environments, like the Citadel in ME1, all the environments seemed to be scaled down this time around. I know BioWare has a ton going for it right now, but they have the chance to make this the Best RPG series in the 21st century, but for that, we need the longevity of KOTOR.

Well I though the game was fun, But too short in teams of main story line. I was not dissapointed at all with the storyline! I enjoyed every minute of it!! I finished the game in 32 hours, and felt that I had missed a whole chunk.... I would have liked it if the team squad mates had more personal mission etc, and that you could get more dialoge out them. Also maybe 20+ main storyline missions.

It is easy for me to criticize, but to make a long game takes a long time.

So to sum up for Mass Effect 3 Give us more!

I just don't like that pretty much the entire game is getting your team and getting their loyalty. i miss all the random side quests like in ME1, all the random assignments. i also wish there was more time spent on getting the collectors at least in ME1 a lot of the side missions or general rabble was getting info on saren and the geth. pretty much no side missions now. you pretty much have to do the loyalty missions for a good outcome
