I'm concerned that at some point I may have a Hard Drive failure on my Xbox and will not be able to play or import my saved games.   This is especially important because I am in the middle of ME2 and would like to be able to continue the game through ME3 when it is released.

Will a memory unit be sufficient or do I need to do something else?  Thanks for your help.

I am very frustrated/upset with EA. I have gotten no response here and 2 responses from EA at the support site that have nothing to do with my problem. Let me show you what happened:

I wrote something similar to my first posting on this topic. EA's support response:

"Thanks for your interest in the Blood Dragon Armor promotion from Dragon Age: Origins. Your purchase of Dragon Age: Origins for PC, XBox 360, or PS3 entitles you to first purchase redemption of the Blood Dragon Armor for both Dragon Age: Origins and Mass Effect 2 on any available platform.

Physical copies of the disc will include a Rave card with the requisite code and download instructions.

Players using a digital copy will have codes e-mailed to them by whichever e-retailer they used to purchase the game.

If you have any further questions, please check our knowledge base at support.ea.com, where you can search our available answers or submit an e-mail for follow up."

What? This has nothing to do with the problem. Then I followed up by repeating the question and got this response:

"Thank you for contacting EA Games Support.

I am sorry for the inconvenience caused to you. If you want to import your save game from the first Mass Effect to continue your adventure in Mass Effect 2 than please follow the given link:

http://support.ea.co...ated=1263414496

Should you have any further questions, please take a moment to review our Knowledge Base site at http://support.ea.com or let us know.

Thank You,

Rahul K"

Ugh. Closer but not what I was asking. I followed up yet again. Support is terrible. I love the games, but not the support. Can anybody else help or know where I can get an answer? Thanks.

The game wants you to pick a save location which means the save MUST be loaded and saved from there, even later on. I don't know whether you can copy/move the save files to a MU and back, you can only try. But hurry if you need to buy a MU because Microsoft killed the production entirely.

Unfortunately there's no other way backing up a save. Any other methode has been forbidden due to Microsofts fear of cheating. For whatever stupid and insignificant reason...

Yes a memory unit is sufficient to backup the save files, but...

In game you cannot change the location were to save. In the dashboard, don't know if you can move the save file to another location (MU, harddrive or internal memory) but you can't copy it. I have absolutely no idea why you can't copy the save files. What if something happens to our saves files ?

I had a backup of my ME1 saved in and memory unit, my harddrive die and luckily I had the backup to play ME2. If I lose my ME2 save file, Bioware can't expect me to play the game again (I wont) and I will not get the next game.

Am I alone on this ? ...

Thanks for the responses. Here is the latest from EA's tech support:

Thank you for contacting EA Games Support.

We are sorry buy the save games files are copy protected and cannot be copied on a Memory/SD card. You can however try backing up your hard drive to see if that will allow you to access your save games back but we cannot guarantee that it will work. We once again apologize for any disappointment this may cause to you.

Should you have any further questions, please take a moment to review our Knowledge Base site at http://support.ea.com or let us know.

Thank You,

EA Games support.

So, this is not possible, now? They say I can't save to a MU, but I can "try" to backup the Hard Drive. Try? What the hell? I am mystified with how Microsoft/EA or whoever is concerned about cheating and game scores more than backing up saved games that have taken up hours of our time. This is possible on the PC. Does anybody if Bioware has spoken to this?

Unbelievable! I need to back the files up because there is an error in my game! The power went out as I was installing some DLC. No fair!! Offer a backup client that allows for the files to be encrypted but copied and transportable. C'mon!! It is not that hard!!

Well I just tried to copy my ME2 saved games to xbox formatted USB thumb drive and descovered this work work.

Like others have said I'm angry that the saves are flagged to not allow copying. I've been looking to get one of the new Xbox systems and copy the save games to USB so I can play on either one and have a backup in case the Hard Drive dies seeing that there is no "authorized" way to backup the hard drive.

It's almost funny because there is no restrictions in copying the DLC to the USB drive, but the save games are a no-no.

This might be why my saves are not being recognized. I copied all my saves (both ME1 & 2) from my old HD to my new 360S using a flash drive a few months ago. And when I tried to import one of my characters to play in ME2 the import tool would not pick up the saves. Mass Effect wouldn't read the saves on my HD either, it was almost like they didn't exist. But I can see them clear as day on my HD, sitting there doing nothing.

Hopefully you get some answers with this because it might solve my issue too.

Count me as one of those who "assumed" you could back up saved ME2 files from 360 to a USB Flash Drive (the 'legit' SanDisk kind in my case)....after all, the ME1 files seemed to Copy over fine.. Disappointed to hear I can't back up the ME2 files. Boo! I should've looked before leaping. :)

get one of the usb data transfer cables & use it to move all your stuff from the old 360hdd to the new 360s.

if you're extra paranoid, make a backup of the drive with something before moving it.

i used the data cable to move everything from 120gb to 250gb drives & then to the new 360s just fine.

I really think that it is rubbish that it is not possible to backup/copy a savegame! a bloody savegame!

I'm getting really paranoid because of all the hours we have put into the ME1 and ME2 chars, also, because it is impossible to make theese chars again!

Why won't bioware just make a 'fix', change, update or even just a reply?

The people that are affected by this is their fans and hardcore followers... if I loose my chars because of a HDD failure... I WILL NOT BUY THE 3'rd GAME!

would anyone recommend to move (move, not copy) the saves to a USB drive and then copy it on a PC? (if the xbox formatted usb can even be read on the PC)? and then move it back to xbox?

just think it is stupid that a game that relies heavily on the importing of savegames, that it is not even possible for us to ensure that our chars are safe...?

I moved all of my ME1 and ME2 game data (DLC & saves) to a properly formatted USB drive to open up space on my first gen 20gb HDD, and everything seemed to move correctly, but when I went to play ME2 it could not find anything. I looked on the USB drive and all the DLC was there, but the saves from both ME1 and ME2 were gone. Gone! Well over 150 hours of my gaming life, disappeared! After throwing up a little bit I came here, hoping I would be able to download at least similar saves to continue to ME3, but I guess I am SOL.

Same boat here this is total BS....bought a new console so i'm screwed? Come on that is nonsense. If my harddrive from my old console worked in this new one sure wouldn't be that big of a deal, but news flash people it doesn't fix this....this is unbelievable, and just down right stupid.

You willingly bought a proprietry locked-down console, and now complain about the lack of features of said locked-down console. Its a limitation brought about by Microsoft, not by Bioware, or even EA.

If you want versatile functionality, then you should have bought a PC.

To use a car analogy, you have purchased a Ford Focus, yet are expecting the performance of Ferrari, the towing capacity of a Kenworth, and the safety of a Volvo.
