Mordin tends to die randomly, apparently. I think he survives if you get his omnitool upgrade though, I'm not sure. I didn't have it the first time and he died during the escape scene.

However, there's a way to ensure that he lives. Any of your loyal squad members can escort your remaining crew back to the Normandy regardless of skills, as long as they're loyal. Send a loyal Mordin as an escort and he should survive. This is what I did the second time.

I can confirm that both Tali and Legion most certainly can die as the vent hackers, even with full loyalty and all upgrades. In fact regardless whether I charge off to rescue the crew, or wait and woo everyone to the fullest before going in, whoever I send into the vent dies, but everyone else lives. WTH???

I just finished the game, but I dont want this ending to be the definite version that carries over to ME3.

I lost Garrus, Legion and Thane. The saddest part is that Bioware does not let them die with dignity. No heroic deaths, just random bullets.

Heres what I did for selections:

tech: Garrus. He can take care of himself, I figured he would be the best choice since Mordin and Tali might not be tough enough to do this alone. I did doubt about Legion, but went with Garrus.

First team leader: Miranda as she suggested herself. She is used to leadership.

Second team leader: Thane. I gues he is not a good leader but it made sense to choose him since it was about creating a distraction. I figured his assasination abilities would be used to full effect and did not think about his leader ship qualities. Legion died as well in pretty much the same sequence.

I had assigned Miranda to keep up the barrier, thats also why Thane was leading. I suppose Miranda was not strong enough, she showed weakness near the end and almost collapsed. But Jack and that Asari where not loyal so I couldnt use them.

All others survived, Mordin too while I see that he died randomly for many players.

In the final sequence I was with Miranda and Jacob who fully supported me, we all made it.

All party members where loyal aside from Jack and the Asari.

the only crewmember of note that survived was the doctor, is it possible to save more of them? I only took on Legion's loyalty mission before I entered the relay. the crew was abducted when I wanted to start that mission.

It was quite rediculous though that the entire team was away with shepard while a single one of them would have been enough to save the crew.

My first playthrough, I had a disloyal Miranda as the biotic specialist. She lived, but the loyal Mordin died because her barrier failed.

In my first 2 playthroughs I had a loyal squad member get carried off by the seekers. On my 3rd time I made a point of killing the Collectors as quickly as possible and had everyone survive., it seems to be a funciton of time getting to the doorway.

off topic but connected with joker, why the hell does joker appear in the doorway after shepherds leap of almost certain doom with an assault rifle; given he's A) physically infirm and B) THE PILOT why isn't he on the bridge PILOTING the ship?

Mordin lived for me when I put him as escort and he was loyal. Grunt randomly died for me however

I'm not really sure what happened on my first play through, but Jack and Legion died. Legion was not loyal and got shot closing the door. Jack just ended up dead with no explanation after the mission was done. I went back and switched up to try an alternate ending. This time I sent Tali into the vent, and she lived, but when I made Jack my biotic specialist, Grunt died.

I don't know how to keep them ALL loyal).

It wasn't a problem for me. I just did everyones loyalty mission - the only times it was in doubt was when Miranda and Jack were arguing and when Legion and Tali were arguing. In both cases I used my high paragon score to use the diplomatic response. This convinced both groups to back down without losing their loyalty.

I thought a lot of this mission was just common sense. The game tells you what kind of person is required for each role then lets you see a profile for the possible candidates. Legion and Tali are clearly listed as having the best technical prowess which means that hacking the door should fall to one of them. When it comes to leadership you need to check their profiles and pick someone who actually has leadership skills. Garus was leading a band of vigilantes prior to you recruiting him making him a good candidate. Miranda's profile indicates that she is a good leader and tactical genius suggesting her as leadership material also.

The only "mistake" I made was assigning Grunt as the escort for the crew. Everyone still lived since everyone was still loyal, but I was expecting I might need a strong fighter for the escort which suggested him as a candidate.

Whoever resurrected this thread ... not a good one. :)

We know much more now days about how Suicide Mission works. There are no random deaths at the end, we now know that is the hold-the-line phase.

There is an error in the second mission guide. If the biotic specialist can't maintain the barrier, the specialist isn't necessarily the one who dies. It can be one of the other 2 squad mates.

I just got done with my first full play through and ended up loosing 4 team members, and only one of them (Miranda) was not at loyal (I took Jack's side in their disagreement.. didn't like Miranda anyways xD)

Tech spec- Legion

First squadleader- The Justicar

your party- Garrus, Thane

In the first mission I chose Legion as my tech, he was loyal, but he still caught a rocket to the face as the doors were closed (maybe something else comes to play here, like how much you have spoken to that character?)

Second squad leader- Grunt

Biotic- Miranda

Your team- Garrus, Thane

Escort to ship- Tali

In this part of the mission i lost two people. Grunt dies from allot of damage, despite him being loyal, and Thane takes the sacrifice when Miranda fails her shield at the end and is carried off by bugs, he was also loyal.. I cried a bit inside xD... and Tali gets all crew members back to the ship a.ok

Final fight sequence

Your Team- Garrus, Jack

Team mates lived... Miranda is shown dead on the way out (I cheered >.>)

I still cant work out why after all I've read, Legion ate rocket on the first mission less there really is a chance that something could go wrong.

Time for a second play through!

Thread necro.

But the reason Legion ate a rocket was due to Samara not being a good leader. Use Garrus/Jacob/Miranda here. (I've also heard that if you don't give him his sniper rifle upgrade he may die regardless).

Grunt died because he's not a leader, the three leaders I mentioned survive and shake off the bullet to the gut. (Or I hear an unloyal Miranda has plot armor and lives).

The biotic should be Samara/Morinth or Jack. Everyone else is too weak and someone will get carried away.

You should take a look at the thread explaining "hold the line deaths" as it goes into a good bit of detail on why things happen.

Thanks for this thread! I've just finished my first playthrough of this fantastic game called Mass Effect 2 and was left with a few questions, some of which this thread answered. So I guess it was Miranda's disloyalty that got Legion killed in the vent mission. No other of the team members and crew which I could interact with died over there.

But once I sided with Jack when she quarreled with Miranda, it seemed impossible to get Miranda's loyalty back, no matter my charm level. I knew I took a risk setting Miranda up as the leader of the second group, but I figured that as my second-in-command, she ought to take that role.

So the importance of the team members' loyalty is shown in the suicide mission, where it can help Shepard in "surprising ways", as the feeded information says. Is there any other situation in the game where loyalty matters?
