Right now, I'm looking at upgrading my processor which is pretty low-end nowadays since I bought the PC in late 2006. It's a Intel 2.13 C2D, I have 4GB of RAM but currently Vista32 is bottlenecking it to 3.2... I have a nVidia 9800GX2, it's a damn powerful card, still hold up very well today. However, as you can see, it's being bottlenecked by a weak processor. So, I'm hoping to upgrade my processor but I am not sure which processor is best for me. I know all the techno-babble but I want to get the best bang for the buck.

$189 - Intel 3.16GHz C2D http://www.newegg.co...N82E16819115036
$279 - Intel 3.33 GHz C2D http://www.newegg.co...N82E16819115054
$254 - Intel 2.83 GHz Quad http://www.newegg.co...N82E16819115041

So, I come to you, to help me decide which processor will be the best bang for the buck. Money isn't too big of a concern since I'm looking for the biggest upgrade to my gaming performance.

If money is no problem take $279 - Intel 3.33 GHz C2D.

I dunno so much about Quad cores, and if games even use all 4 cores.

Maybe a Quad core will be a bettre choice , in near futur , lot of Game will benefit from multy core , Dragon age : origins use it pretty well.

Buy the quad core, DAO and more and more games are starting to take advantage of multiple cores. This link has CPU benchmarks for DAO - even one of the slower C2Qs (Q6600) beats a fast C2D by some margin.

Very interesting, I'm currently looking at this i-7 Quadcore processor http://www.newegg.co...N82E16819115214 but I'm not sure if it will work with my stock motherboard which was bought in late 2006 (October). Will there be any compatability problems or will it install without any problems?

Yes DA:O does benefit from a Quad core by a good margin. So a Q series CPU would probably be good.

It uses a different socket, so you'd need a new motherboard too. The fastest available CPU your motherboard would accept is this Q9650. There's the Q9770 too, but it's incredibly expensive and they don't have it in stock.

But it would probably be more cost-effective and future proof to buy a new motherboard and CPU anyway, since Intel have stopped producing new CPUs for Socket LGA775.

I suggest you ask in the hardware group, flem1 knows these things better than I.

Well that cpu uses another socket, so then you'll need a new motherboard and prolly DDR3 ram.

Hmm, it looks like the Q9650 is the processor I will buy. I don't really want to upgrade my mobo just yet. This processor should last me for another 3-5 years which is good.

This CPU is going to be a tremendous upgrade, I can't wait. The next step for me to modernize my PC is to upgrade it to Windows 7 64 bit which would of course require a clean install. Fortunately for me, I have a 1TB external hard drive to back up the files I want to retain. I'm going to go all out and upgrade my RAM and replace them with 2GB RAM sticks which would give me an extra 4GB of RAM to work with.
