So been playing my first playthrough on hard been fun but wondering about the best order to play the locations in.  The circle was incredibly difficult but Wayne is amazingly useful.  I have seen somewhere that the best order was redcliff (which did feel like an extended introduction still) then mage circle than forest then denerim and ozza last.  Is this the best order...been thinking circle first to get wayne might be the best way to go.

Going to do at least another play through with a mage but change up my spell selection, going for the frost line much earlier (cone of cold for the win) and at least getting the paralyze circle as well man that would be useful in redcliff...

I think your chosen play order should be based on what companions/items you want early in the game. I'm on my first play through but have gone Redcliffe, Denerim, Forest, Mage's Circle, then Orzzamar.

I would not doing Denerim second, it didn't flow very well, I would do Forest second because that gets you the Jauggernaught armour very early.

Next play through I think I'll try Orzammar about halfway through to pick up Oghren early on.

Your order of events should really be determined by your characters origins. I'm always partial to returning home a monstrous badass Grey Warden as opposed to a guy who's freshly joined.

Certain origins likely lend themselves to returning home earlier rather than later.

Do orzammar first.

What's the shortest of the four? I have one character who'll do Orzammar first to pick up Oghren, another doing the Tower first to pick up Wynne. My third playthrough I want Zevran as soon as possible -- which is the shortest of the recruiting sequences so that I'm not too leveled up when I get him?

Zevran will always show up en route between your first successfully acquired army and the location of you second... iirc.

(I always do Redcliffe first, but I like getting the longest out of the way. Elves are the shortest.)

I prefer doing the Mage Tower first to get Wynne, and then Orzammar to get Oghren, which will get my Zevran along the way. I save Redcliffe for after the 3 allies since it's part of the story leading to the end.

Do orzammar first.

There are pros and cons to this. The pro is that there is a truckload of battle intensive experience to be had. I walked in at level 11, and walked out close to 16.

The advantage of waiting later is that the orzammar gives massive loot. If you wait it scales up and sells for huge coin. at level 19, I had tier 7 daggers dropping like candy.

hmm what about the level scaling? The order I am doing them in was the order I thought the scaling made best. For a nightmare run which is the best order usually?  Oh and surley the mage is the longest I mean redcliff didn't take me nearly as long as that one did.  I mean the fade portion on its own was loooong

I always find the Circle the best one to do early because of the Fade bonuses and the Mages are easy to kill before they learn Crushing Prison and Cone of Cold.

Then I like to do Orzammar, Redcliffe, Forest, Denerim, Haven. But that's not the easiest order to do things in. The easiest order would probably be: Circle, Redcliffe, Forest, Denerim, Haven, Orzammar.

I usually go Circle, Denerim, Forest, Orzammar, Redcliffe, Haven

I leave Redcliffe last 'cause I want to keep every militia guy alive.

0. If you care about it, a quick trip to Frostback Mountains to get Knight Commander Armour at the merchant outside Orzammar

1. Circle Tower (Fade bonuses, Wynne, opening an option in Redcliffe Castle)

2. Redcliffe including Castle

3. Urn of Sacred Ashes (dragon loot, Champion's Shield, upgraded merchants in Denerim - access to Chasind Great Maul, Felon's Coat, Evon the Great's Mail, the option to craft Drakeskin and Dragon armours - though will lock out other Harren's armor merchandise).

4. and forth - whatever you feel like doing.

1 = Mage Tower... for Wynne of course.

2 = Warden's Keep (Early Warden Commander Armor - which you can upgrade later - plus two extra blood skills.)

3 = Go grab golem (Not sure why but since you were doing the other DLC you might as well do this one.)

4 = Redcliffe (I can't be sure about this, but my guess is if you do this at later levels on a high difficulty, you might have problems with all the guards dying on you. I prefer to do this and with Wynne and Morrigan with heals - and group heals using raven respec mod on Morrigan - to ensure that no-one in the village dies at all.

5 = Brecilian Forest (By now you should be able to kill the High Dragon, and Redcliffe is not technically finished until the Arl is healed so it's natural progression.)

6 = Flemeth (why not kill another Dragon.)

7 = Orzammar (Ogren is just the same as Sten, only you get him later ... so I never use him. Also, now scaled with level like another poster said above, you get loads of dwarven armor etc.)

This is just a suggestion of course - I don't really think there is a 'best' way. I just know it's best to pick up Wynne before Redcliffe so you can choose all her abilities. Otherwise I would do it by distance on the map because that's probably how the storyline works best (e.g. redcliffe, circle, forest, orz, den.)

I like to do the DLCs first, they're quick and all have really good items which will set you up nicely to take on the other levels.

For me I've found that the best route is:

1 - Denerim (doing the back alley quests before the bucket load of archers can spam scattershot)

2 - All the possible sidequests grabbed from the boards

3 - Circle tower (so that you get the stats boost early on in order to better plan your char)

4 - Both Wardens Keep and Stone Prisoner

5 - Redcliffe

6 - Orzamar

7 - Breeze through the Breciallian Forest

I generally mix it up according to the character I'm playing, with one exception: I usually go to the Circle first for the stat bonuses and Wynne (and to get the Fade part over with as quickly as possible).

Most areas can be handled from level 11 onwards. Level scaling before the landsmeet stops eventually, so you can mop up effortlessly anything after level 18. Considering I hit level 20 in Orzammar, i  wouldn't worry.

Gaxkang can get a very interesting at level 20, since he can throw some nasty dispels.

That being said, you want to get combat derived XP first, since it scales down as your level goes up, and get quest derived xp last, as it's static. As such, I would do the combat intensive sections early like Orzammar, redcliffe castle and Brecilian, and leave board quests for the end,

I generally don't start on any of the main storyline areas right away, I do the chanter's board, mage's collective, interested parties, crime wave, companion quests, area dependent sidequests(trap-making in Lothering as an example), etc first.

I also go around, and open up direct travel to most areas(Orzammar instead of Frostback Mountains, Brecilian Forest instead of Outskirts, Circle Tower instead of Docks), etc. In the process I typically have a jam packed quest log, but I also tie up most of the loose ends before focusing entirely on the story and quests that require story granted access to locations.

I will also force encounters such as Strange Wood(Axameter, best Alistair axe for doing the Urn), etc by travelling back and forth just so I get them out of the way also. In a typical game I encounter Gentle Path(Old Tegrin) probably 20+ times because of this, and nail down all the random encounters(that don't depend on story elements) as being visited.

dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Strange_Wood - All you need to know about Axameter, and forcing this encounter.
dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Treacherous_Path - All you need to know about forcing this encounter. **Do not attempt at low levels!

As to combat based xp, you can get unlimited exp from the ally supply crates, so there really is no reason to do any areas in particular first.

I recommend always doing the Circle of Magi first.  Not just for Wynne, but all of the bonus Attributes in the Fade makes it worth going to strengthen your character.

@ the comment about Gahkxang... When I found all the entries I was (before the landsmeet already, donated at bit much to my allies already....) at level 24 and beat him at 25. Using a 2H templar/berserker with Morrigan, Zevran and Alistair as companions, he was a piece of cake.

i usally go for redcliffe+castle then i go to circle of magi so that i can get the mages to free connor, so the arls family is all alive + you get wynne and attribute bonuses. then i head to brecillian forest as it is quite short in comparison and get you the levels easilty then i do the urn. as you can see im doing everything but orzammer, i do that last as it has some hard bosses, i found the broodmother harder than the archdemon and you get really awesomly scaled loot as mr raider said. you might also want to do the return to ostagar DLC as soon as you reach 18 as then you get cailans armour which apart from looking awesome is one of the best in the game when tier 7, and duncans weapons arent bad either.

Definitely Circle of Mages first. I like having the Fade bonuses for the rest, and I'm also a bit tired of it and just want to get that part out of the way.

Other than those bonuses, it doesn't really matter at all. But I think with all the mad darkspawn battles in the Deep Roads, that FEELS more high-level than the rest.

If it's not your first time playing the game (or if you like a challenge), I would suggest doing Orzammar first so that you can pick up Oghren as early as possible. This way you can take him with you to the crisis at the Circle Tower and enter the Fade. Dwarves do not normally enter the Fade when they dream, so you'll get a rather interesting conversation with Oghren when he gets forcefully sent there. In addition, if you plan on playing the expansion Awakening, Oghren will also have altered dialogue when he enters the Fade again during the Blackmarsh quest, acknowledging his last time in the Fade.

Furthermore, if you take Oghren with you during the Urn of Sacred Ashes quest, he will say something REALLY interesting about the Urn of Sacred Ashes (in particular, about where the Urn is being held), which may provide a tremendous hint as to why the Guardian is still alive and why the Ashes have such power.
