Simple question, is it possible to un-equip a weapon?

No. This really bugged me when I first started ME1 too. All you can do is swap your existing weapon (e.g. Pistol) for another one. You'll always have one of each weapon (Pistol, Shotgun, Assault Rifle, Sniper Rifle) on every single party member.

Hit Q. It'll holster your weapons.

oh yea, thats not a problem. I wanted to know if it was possible to remove a weapon from the player/NPC. I'm trying to unlock the sniper weapon proficiency, so I need to have my Companions only use the sniper riffle (to rack up the kills required).

Hold space and select the weapon from each one's menu. Unfortunately, that resets the selected weapon either when you zone, load a save or return to the Normandy (can't remember which one exactly).

yea, its just such a hassle, having to reset the weapon choices every time I go through a cut scene.

I'm pretty certain that it's Shepard who has to make the requisite kills, not your squad mates. That is, YOU need to make 150 kills with the Sniper Rifle. Having Garrus or somebody else use only the Sniper Rifle won't make a difference. This applies to all the Achievements like Stasis Mastery, AI Hacking etc.

huh, this is the pc version. I'm just trying to make it so when I create a custom character I can pick between all 4 weapons as the weapon I'm proficient in.

question on that, do I need to beat the game to un-lock that proficiency? Or can I just make the number of kills then save it and create a new character?

Abilities are unlocked the second you get the achievement (i.e. applicable to all subsequently created characters), you don't have to complete the game.

I think that squaddie kills also count towards it (pretty sure Garrus or someone got my AR one once), and you get a small pop-up that reads "Achievement". No way of knowing which one it is without going back to the main menu, though.

Squad kills DO NOT COUNT FOR THE ACHIEVEMENT.
Having your squadmates get 150 kills with a weapon does NOTHING to get you toward the achievement that unlocks weapon proficiency.  That is a very well established fact.
In addition, you can only choose 1 (one) additional ability.  That means, you have to choose ONE of the weapons to add to a new character and if you do so, you can't add any other ability.

The only class that logically make sense to add a weapon to are Adepts and some would argue Engineer or Sentinel but there are other abilities better suited for them.

An important thing to note is that the most effective and damage efficient weapon in the game is the pistol.  With Marksman active, the Pistol puts out more damage than any other weapon by a rather large margin.

not sure if I'm allowed to ask another question in this thread, but I'm going to. Are there supposed to be geth weapons available to the player w/out any kind of mod?

I installed the Pinicle station add on (best $5 I've spent so far).

Edit:Spelling errors

Yes, there are Geth rifles, but they only become available later on, as they are fairly high level. They have high accuracy, but they can't be upgraded.
