I'm about a third of the way through my second play through and I honestly have no motivation to finish... or even return to ME2.
ME1 had a few annoyances (I played PC version, so much of control issues were fixed), but for the most part it was an incredible game. ME2 progresses the story which is great. It also fixes most the technical issues and vastly improves the lighting and graphics... but it sacrifices most of what I enjoyed about ME1.
So much of this has been said, so I'll keep it short. The complete removal of an inventory system that you can modify to your liking and deligate to your squad is dismaying. Now you find one variation to a weapon style and have five steps to universally upgrade it. Any RPG aspects and tailoring have been removed. So has the grand selection, rare "elite" finds and modding on the spot to your exact needs. Replacing the lauded Predator H X armor for instance, with four variations of N7 with color options just confuses me. Were the color, type and pattern customization added to a hand full of the ME1 armors, with their stats and abilities entact, it might seem like an actual contribution instead of a meager replacement.
The new biotic and tech skills are nice. Curving them around corners was a stroke of genius. However our control and customization of them is once again muted. One in many trends to remove the "deep RPG elements" Ray so frequently boasted of, with generic idiot lights.
Replacing the exploration with a planet scanning mini-game and a hand full of extremely short, pointless corridor shooter levels really dug its claws into me. The story feels so much less epic now. The feel of the game provides a lot less granduer for me. I thought the Hammerhead was to improve exploration on fewer, but more diverse locations. I feel that would have been a much better answer. The planet scanning especially is horrific.
Shepards morality has also taken a turn for the worse in ME2. While in ME1 the Paragon choices actually represented some righteousness, in ME2 he is much more ambiguous. The "more gray area" approach does not appeal to me. I would say the Lazorus Project failed to bring back the "same man he was before" as Miranda defined it.
Love Interests in ME2 took a huge dive. If you prefer to develop a relationship instead of instantly jumping into bed, you are out of luck. If you do choose a "sex interest" (all this game offers) then every other potential interest treats you like you cheated on them and will no longer speak with you. You dialogue choices are reduced to "I want to screw you" or "I want to screw all of you". There is no neutral "I care about you, but not in that way. Does that mean we cannot be friends?" option. Forcing Shep to be single or a tramp instantly made me hate the game.
Way too much of the game was given away before release. I can only partially fault BioWare for this as I choose to view a lot of it. Then of course there were the idiots who came on the forums and ruimed the ending a week before release. I would definitely like to renagde interupt each of them. Again however, this was of no fault of the developers.
In short, the dumbing down of the RPG elements, watering down of the morality issues and relationship development, complete removal of the longer more rewarding missions like Noveria and Feros and exploration altogether has removed the natural desire I felt with ME1, to play this game over and over again. Now I know the story points I'm already bored with it. With Stalker: Call of Pripyat releasing in two days I don't know if this long awaited, highly anticipated game will do much but collect dust on my shelf. After all this, that is very disappointing to say.
Disappointed.
