Who must return?

I think Thane is a very interesting character and I would also like to see him return in ME3; however BioWare did leave it questionable that he would come back.

People who should show up, but maybe not neccessarily in the squad? Miranda and that other guy, for sure! Mordin should at the very least stay on the ship as your resident smart guy.
I still say Jacob, Miranda and possibly Mordin are way more likely than Tali and Garrus... but I know as much as the next guy anyway, so I could be wrong. I'm kinda hoping the entire crew is back to be honest. And I think it must be, because I can't figure out how else they're going to do it. Either nobody is back, or everybody is.

Given how much trouble it was for Bioware to bring back ME1 squad mates (when only 3 characters were able to be 'lost' in your playthrough and each one of those 3 was reduced to a cameo), I think it's safe to assume that since any of the team can die in ME2, there's no way we will get more than cameos for most/all of them in ME3.
Until I hear otherwise at least, definitely not going through the same disappointment again.

Any of the ME2 cast appearing in some capacity would be great, really, so many of them I adored.

ME3 is the big event; the big battle; the last hurrah. I could very easily see Wrex letting a protege take over while he goes to save the entire Galaxy and kick ass with Shepard one last time.

Ashley/Kaidan and Liara were given small roles for story reasons, not because they could die. (Well, and Liara can't die.)
Wrex was given a medium-sized role (I mean, honestly, he's got about as big a role in the game as Aria does, it's not tiny by any means.) because he could VERY EASILY die. Not just because he could die, but because he's very likely to be dead.
And... honestly, it fits his character anyway. He was never really 'part of the squad' as much as most of the others were.
Based on the fact that everyone can die from ME2, I'd say they're all actually very likely to survive. Bioware isn't going to make the default for ME3 'oh... uh... Miranda died, and Legion died, and Mordin died.' I mean they could and they might, but it'd actually be easier to just assume everybody lived and then make them squadmates. It *all* depends on the default.

I would also expect "boycott" groups if they did not include these characters or at least very angry forum posts and fans.

Everyone else is possibly dead. But from the "dead men/women/aliens walking", I would prefer to have Wrex, Miranda, Jacob, and Mordin. Don't need to be squaddies, though in Wrex's case I would really like him to be.

Very good point, we should keep our enthusiasm in check until there's any real evidence that our favorites will come back in a squad/romance roll instead of just railroad talky crap.
It's up to us to make sure they know what we want. Not just, "I hate everything and this game sucks," stuff. If we want somthing new or the same in ME3, we need to say what that is and give evedence. Keep the fires down.
And if Tali doesn't come back in a significant way, I'll shoot my X-Box.

I think Joker and Illusive Man will have to make a re-appearance in ME3
However, I think ME3 will have something about trying to ally all the different species/races together to fight against the reapers.

Miranda- My Shepard fell head over heels for her (whereas Liara/Ashley were just convenient). Awesome character.
I realize that its a long list, but I got attached, sue me.
