I think we have determined 8.5/10 people prefer Tali over any other. There are many reasons for this. Tali is just such a great character. Bioware needs to look at these type of threads for Mass Effect 3.
If they do not put Tali in it I will never forgive them.
Tali always felt like a little sister to me and it was awkward having her as a potential LI. I don't know if I'll be able to force one of my Shepards to go down that road or not
I think Tali should be a one-and-done squadmate in ME3. Bring her back, let her have a reunion, then go on one or two missions with you before replacing her with a brand new character.
Actually, I think this is the treatment most previous characters should receive. I don't want to waste ME3's probably huge budget on the same characters I've seen before

Ashley: Not enough personal dialogue in ME1 to really develop a relationship, she just keeps spouting poetry.
Liara: Semi cute personality, but really just wants to dissect your brain due to prothean beacon.
Miranda: Feel like she's just getting close to you as a way of keeping you in line, plus i reckon TIM's already got dibs if you know what i mean.
Jack: Yeah she cares for you but she's so F#$*& up in the head, it would be too much effort, every conversation is a battle.
Tali: Cute personality coupled with a cute accent, plus you've got the benefit of 2 games worth of contact and personal dialogue, plus she actually cares for you, wants you to be happy no matter what even if that means she has to give you away to a human character.
Just my two cents, at least with the female characters, never actually tried to romance a male character yet

Yes it is just a video game and she is just a fake character, but I have to admit if I was in Shepards shoes I would most definatly enjoy spending time with a cute personality like Tali's. I also like her accent. The fact that she wants to "feel my skin on hers" means she is not looking for so much a sexual encounter, but to be intimate with someone; the ONLY one she trusts. That part is just gravy on the top. I wouldn't want to deny her that, since she is already in a tough situation with the flotilla and the death of her father.
Oh and I love those hips

A guy walks up to you and asks who your girlfriend is. You pull out your wallet and show him a picture of Tali. "Hips don't f***in' lie, bro."

As others have observed, she is not a "stock" character such as Miranda (femme fatale / sexy spy), Jack (troubled delinquent), Morrigan (suburban goth in sorceror garb), and the like. Newcomers to Bioware tend to like these more cliche characters because they are familiar (and borrowed from other genres/artists).
Tali is Bioware's own, and she is the result of 15 years of cumulative experience in storytelling and game design. She is the best character that they have ever produced. It is no surprise that the developers spend extra effort on her quests and her lines. It is also no surprise that longtime Bioware fans adore her.

Tali appeals mostly to longtime fans of bioware. The devs acknowledge this by making her combat responses harken back to Minsc and Aerie (from Bioware's collaboration with Black Isle Studios). Bioware has developed their loyal and longtime fanbase in large part because of their characters, and their fans have spent a significant portion of the past 15 years with bioware characters. Playing a new Bioware game is like rediscovering old friends. Tali is an amalgam of the best aspects of many of their female characters over the years.

I found Tali to be nice, but hardly interesting as a love interest. To be honest, I found most of the ME2 possibilities for a male shep to be lacking/1 dimensional.
Sure Tali is more developed than most and less 1D but she just seemed..erghh..boring?

How can you not? Her character pulls at every instinctual heart string in male genetic code. She's sweet, looks up to you as a hero, her pillar of strength, is respectful, the list goes on. In essence she is the epitome of the sci-fi princess and they did a fantastic job with her and it shows. Her VA is amazing as well.
Plus she's Mission v2.0 and that's awesome.
Without the jailbait factor, but for the rest, QFT.
And she is loyal to Shepard and trusts him implicitly, so it feels that your choices in the past mattered. Especially for my Paragon, can't really talk about Renegades.

+ For starters, she's got a uniqueness about her. Between her personality being so up-beat, to her being the only Quarian in the first game, she had a good start that gave something to build on.
+ A lot of guys like girls who aren't completely girly. Does that make sense? Being so into engines is actually a turn on to some degree, because it makes her stand out among a world full of Asari.
+ There is something to be said about a mystery about her ofcourse. Personally, it was one of the things that opened the interest, but after ME2, I don't care what she looks like anymore. She can look like the Predater for all I care, as long as she doesn't try to kill me.
+ The last point leads to just bluntly saying: Personality > Looks. Most "manly men" don't like to just flat up admit to that, but give me a girl who I'll be able to talk to for hours on end over a girl who I could stare at for hours on end.
+ During the course of Mass Effect 2, she becomes... so real, I guess? Holding her when she found her father is a very emotional scene. Her making it clear that she clearly likes you via messages you were never supposed to hear made me smile, etc.
+ She's fully capable of taking care of herself, yet you still want to take care of her at the same time.
+ This is kinda a random X-Factor one, but the Quarians such an easy species to want to "take care of", like I just mentioned above. Think about it. They can die just because there suit gets a small hole in it if they don't catch it in time. They are constantly looked down upon by all races, even though none of the current group were alive when the decisions were made. The mission on the Citadel with the Quarian being harassed, I felt like I had to help her just because she had it hard enough. A Quarian Female is are the kittens of the Mass Effect universe. If this is becuase of the impresion Tali made, or just because how there species is mapped out, I'm not sure, but every time I see a Quarian in need, esspecially a female, it becomes my duty to keep them safe.
So yeah, there's what I figure. Oh, and them hips.

Miranda is a *****, Jack is a more backstory driven character, and I could never see any sort of romance with her, and Ash abandoned me on Ilos. I never liked Ashley anyway. Also, everything Novacain said is true.

Thank god, that's not exactly the case. Wait a few more years, or explore different areas in your country, maybe different rings.

Well, I'll still reserve myself for human characters in games. At least I'll find the important parts in the dark.
(Obvious mockery on aliens being aliens, not to take it personally. Man, you mock someone in a Tali topic, and have to cast flame shield the next time)

I was browsing through some of the polls and an astonishing number of people seem to prefer tali as a squad mate and LI. Someone fill me in. What am I missing? Of all of the options, what sets her apart? Imo, if you wanted looks, you would go for miranda. Jack had the most interesting back story, I thought. I dont like Ash at all. So of all the ladies...why?

Interesting. I never thought that my being a hardcore bioware fan would make me like Tali more. It makes sense though considering I am a hardcore Aerie fan. I
