I was browsing through some of the polls and an astonishing number of people seem to prefer tali as a squad mate and LI. Someone fill me in. What am I missing? Of all of the options, what sets her apart? Imo, if you wanted looks, you would go for miranda. Jack had the most interesting back story, I thought. I dont like Ash at all. So of all the ladies...why?
I actually agree with... well, everything. I liked Tali and the fact that she has a personality this time around, but I didn't really care much. I mean, apart from the romance option which I'll never pursue, there was nothing interesting apart from one tiny moment in her loyalty quest.
I also found Jack to be most interesting, however at first I didn't like her. But later, when her personality hidden between the lines and behind the words - began to come forth, well, she really got me.
Anyways, I did a little experiment before and after the game came out, about as many people finds Tali boring, signing the plate 'don't care' as many considers himself to be a Talimancer. The latter are just (embarrassingly) loud. But it's not bad, it gives us a good chance to mock them.

Also, it has something to do with the age and 'nerdness' template. Whenever I write a novel, I check the interests of the target audience first. In this case, I'd say Tali's targets are the young man in the age of 17-21 with extensive computer/internet interests. And if we know something about 17-21 years old nerds, the used to flood the forums. So it's another reason to find this many of these comments poll results there.
As for the " .... LOVE " threads, it's the same template. Remember that little social experiment with ME1? Younger male specimens usually got Liara as their romance interest regardless of the gender. More mature players went for Ashley or Kaidan for the first play through.
I'd say the same is true for Tali and Jack, Miranda here. (However personally, I never found the latter to be extensively interesting)
Hope it helps you to find the answer you're looking for.
edit:
Oh and to add a question: What I found more interesting, why are people so obsessed with interspecies romances? They are completely against sci-fi rules. (Alien species are different. Biologically, mentally, and in their followed social and philosophycal leads. And... in too many ways.)
Would it be the same if let's say Garrus and Thane were humans?
