Just finished ME2, and I have to say it's an awesome game in every way.
Excellent writing, voice-acting, gameplay... it's all been said before, and I'd be preaching to the choir if I add my own feeble praise.
Despite ME2's awesome awesomeness, I think there's one thing missing in the portrayal of Commander Shepard, and that's a sense of vulnerabiltiy. I mean, this guy/girl had the whole freaking galaxy riding on his/her shoulders twice now, and not once did I witness him display a sense of doubt about the outcome or in his own abilities to handle this burden. I don't know about you guys, but I think Shepard's constantly inspirational (or vicious) outlook on what are mostly impossible odds is somewhat unrealistic. Heroic, but still unrealistic. If I had that much riding on me, I'd mentally curl up into a ball several times.
I get it that he's a leader and commander and can't really show his fears and doubts to the people he leads. But even in intimate moments with a love interest or Dr Chakwas, he/she still doesn't show any sign of vulnerability. In Dragon Age Origins, you had a chance to express self-doubt, vulnerability, and even fear at the onset of an overwhelming Blight, and that option made the whole adventure much more real for me. This is what real heroes are about right? Overcoming overwhelming oddes DESPITE personal reservations and insecurities? Shepard can't be a beacon of hope and strength ALL the time.
Btw, first time poster here. Been lurking for a loooong time, but never really felt the need to post anything. Until now.
