People can really change in 2 years.

But shes an asari, so shes now 102 so she has 898 years left, she couldn't wait a little longer before going cold calculative and rutheless....

Is that a serious question?

I don't blame them.

I wish that you could see a little more of the old liara in the new liara, it's cool that they aren't afraid to change the characters up, and that is great in my book, but she just seems too far from what she was, maybe if I read the comic, which I will once it's released as a compilation, and see the change take place I would be more happy with it, but from just the two games it's too big a jump.

I had a romance with her in the first game, but I always cared about Tali more.  I only hope that will stick onto ME3...  Honestly if they right now add'd some DLC to have a relationship with Tali in the first game and changed stuff up for the second to match with that, I'd start part one up again right now.

I still do but I'm reading the comic so yea... it's a shame that she's not that fleshed out to show how ( imo ) devoted she is towards her commander but it's Bioware, they prob have their reasons for getting you to "hate" her

emotionally engaging doesn't mean everything is all cheery and awesome

Liara is still my favorite character. I'm a total Liara fangirl now that I know how far she was willing to go for my Shepard. I can deal with the act she's putting on right now because the real Liara is still in there. In fact I've got my own little back story going about Liara and my Shepard covertly keeping in touch after Illium. My Shepard's are staying loyal to her and if given the option my other Shepard's would gladly dump whatever LI they have for Liara if given the opportunity.

I have no idea what's going on with Liara in ME2, 'cause I'm at that part yet, but my Shepard was her love interest. Maybe my Shepard's "death" threw her over the edge and into extreme PTSD. Remember Kyle and Toombs?

I don't really consider Liara a Major Power Broker so much a a Mid size to upper level Power Broker. Remember that when we meet her she is a Big fish in a Small pond compared to the Shadow Broker and TIM who are Big fish in the Ocean that makes up ME's universe.
She also mentions that the Experience she gained from her job of researching ruins seems to work well when applied to her current job as a Information Broker. Plus Information brokering seems like a job where you can rise quickly depending on what info you have, how you handle your rivals and how good your network is at getting info. Info that could be worth millions can become worthless with a slip of the tongue or if things change.
Bioware could have given us more info on how Liara made it to the top of Ilium's food chain, that way her status isn't such a shocker.

I honestly loved the transformation in her character. She has matured and gone from a rather innocent and somewhat naive youth to a much more understanding and emotionally outspoken adult in the mere course of two years.

It's not serious character development. What happens with Tali, Garrus, and Wrex is character develop. Existing traits become more prominant as the character changes over time, but a great deal of what makes the character that character remains.

Garrus always wanted to be free from the rules and regulations of C-Sec, and to be harsher to criminals. His archangel persona is him doing just that. In ME 1, Tali's pilgrimage was to help the fleet and to proove herself an adult. When we encounter a mature Tali, it makes sense.

Liara was never ruthless. Never obsessed with hurting people. She never had the abilities and contacts nessary to become a major power broker and couldn't develop them in 2 years.

The Liara we see in ME 2 is nothing like the ME 1 Liara in personality or motivation. It's obvious that a new writer who didn't like the character from the first game got ahold of her.

She most certainly did have the abilities to become a successful information broker. Liara said pretty off-handedly that searching through BS for real intel was just like excavating at a digsite. She might not have had the contacts in the first place, but, obviously, she had no trouble networking.

I think Liara is simply struggling with piles and piles of emotional baggage that makes her seem cold and unfeeling before you complete her Observer quests. She's still emotionally awkward in the sense that (imo) she can't threaten people without sounding fake (which I actually kind of find amusing now rather than disturbed by). It also seems that she still lacks self-confidence in herself enough that she believes even though she risked life and limb for Shepard, Shepard wouldn't appreciate all she went through to bring Shepard back. That being said, she's still compassionate enough to be willing to die for Shepard (again) just for the fairly small chance that the Lazerous project would work (even if it was a little selfish on her part, but can you blame her?).

What I'm thinking will happen in ME3 is that Shepard (regardless of whether you stayed loyal to her or not as a romance option or if you romanced her at all) will be the one to save Liara from herself. I'm pretty sure she's gonna persue this new goal of hers so fanatically (as she did with the Protheans) that she's going to lose sight of a lot of things and that it'll be Shepard's job to bring her back...At least that's what I'm hoping. x3

Edit, and yes, I'm a MAJOR Liara fangirl <3

I have always loved Liara but i somehow lost it when i ran into her on illum making a crazy threat and turning into this crazy ****. i would have her on my side till the end but...not anymore i think they should have her die in the next one really dramatically( holding her in shepard's arms and slowly whispering her last words)

We Don't love you anymore
sorry (bullet to her head)

I don't know what the hell you people are talking about. She is basically the same person if you talk to her enough and get her to open up.

Hell did you guys just talk to her once, then ask for the dossiers. She does eventually give you the reason for her change, it isn't like it is just coming out of the blue. I respect her a lot afterwards and realize that she isn't just that girl you saved 2 years back. I can't wait for her to come back in ME3 since it's apparent she'll be one of your most skilled squadmates (hopefully).

Me either. The only reason I want Liara and Ashley/Kaiden in ME3 as squaddies is out of pure fairness to those that got screwed in ME2. Naturally, I care far more about having Tali and Garrus back for the finale.

I didn't really care for her, but I do feel sorry for what she's become. She's basically put up a wall around her emotions perhaps to not get hurt again. I mean, if you listen carefully she sounds like the Liara from ME1 when she first sees you, but then puts her wall back up

I'm just hoping they come up with a REALLY good reason as to why we couldn't bring her back into the fold during ME2 , because the one they supplied is weaker than a tissue paper bridge for tanks.

She was my romance coming out of ME1, and now she mysteriously doesn't want to come with me because her friend she only knew for a month died? Say what again Bioware?

I am also extremely dissapointed with the choices for female Shepherd romances in Me2. I'm sorry but black guys just aren't my thing, and aliens who don't look like humans aren't my thing either. Just gross all around.

Recently all discussions regarding Liara has been dropped. Sure the cold, scary, I'm going to tear you apart shadow broker with my biotics isn't what we fell for from the first game, but we can hope for the clarification and re-emergence of the Liara that our Shepard's fell for can't we? OR IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK BIOWARE?!:pinched:

Apparently it is too much to ask for. I just got my Shep with a Liara romance to Illium and I have to say that I am so disappointed in what BW is doing not only with the character but in the complete lack of acknowledement of their romance from ME1.  My opinion of ME2 was already pretty low but this really was just the straw breaking the camel's back.

I'd be interested to know why Liara's character needed a total retcon of her personality, They really went out of their way to trash the character in ME2.

I would have been alright with her being less innocent, less naive. But to go from someone who didn't quite get sarcasm to Ms. Queen Info Broker in only two years just doesn't seem to fit who she is. I get her dedication and passion but it doesn't seem like the same person, no matter what reasons they construct for it.

Lol I love how bad she is at being mean. Then when she breaks down it's totally obvious the front.

Btw rumors are abound of a Liara DLC found in the files of PC ME2. Looking forward to something like that.

bioware was treading dangerous waters wiht all the me1 squaddie cameos (well except wrex, hes awesome no matter what). they had to make make it fit the DARK SECOND ACT tone, yet not make them seem thrown in as fanservice. wrex and liara were handled well in that regard, in that you actually interact with them more than once. (but kaiden's douchebaggery really doesnt help his popularity.) her brutal shift isnt the problem, its that you cant explore it pretty much at all. you'd think shepard would have more to say about the love of his life going thru a distrubing shift of character. Shepard dies, and she essentially zombifies him for her own desire, even though she knows zombieshep will be doing the devil's work. not only does she deal with his death, but his rebirth as a tool of 'evil' at her own hands, and the fear the after it all shepard would hate her for it, enough so that she assumes you do even after you tell her otherwise (to explain her distant demeanor). i dont hate her new character, but that all hinges on how its dealt with in ME3. if i get the garrus treatment again (best buds from long ago, and there are 2 conversations, both about his loyalty mission, never elaborating on his character changes) then i go back for a talimance.

Liara scares me now. Gone is the dig site loving, socially awkward girl. I really wish that the game allowed you to be a ittle more involved with her, maybe even an interrupt where you would do something drastic like pick her up or smash her table. I just wanted to do something, anything to make her see how she has changed.

I was tempted to move on...but after finding out how much she went through I started to reconsider.

Then there was the scene right before the suicide run where my Shepard stared at the picture of her. That one little scene said so much it actually brought a tear to my eye (music didn't help either...damn you Jack Wall and your brilliant composing). I felt bad about even considering moving onto someone else. I'm a sap.

Now to wait painfully for the resolution in Mass Effect 3...
