Except the main event of the game is not Liara's story.  It's Shepherd's.

That's might be why they elected to do a comic to tell that side story when Dark Horse wanted to publish a licenced tie-in comic.  Shepherd doesn't appear in the comic at all, even though s/he is the main reason Liara sets out on her quest.

Ach, come on. First, Liara is part of Shepard's story, especially when they had a romance going. Second, if the game would be ONLY about Shepard, we could just as well do away with 80 % of the rest of the stories and background. Don't justify what BioWare did here. When playing the game, I thought they simply didn't want to spend more time on the Liara part, but now I learn they've dedicated a whole comic to it? Fine, go ahead and try to make some more money, but not at the cost of withholding important pieces of information from the main game.

I was already torn between Liara and Miranda before I saw her again, heavily leaning towards Miranda. Then I saw her again, with Miranda in my party, and I saw how she had become this paranoid and ruthless woman (She's probably scared and she's put up some emotional defenses). What was funny for me was the fact that when she embraced me, she kind of pulled away and gave me a weird look, and I could just imagine her looking at Miranda and my Shep's face that had the look of "Yeah... This isnt working for me."

I stayed loyal to Liara, I hope she plays a more prominent role in the next game.

Haven't you noticed that when the supporting characters' stories play out, it's through Shepherd's eyes and Shepherd is the one who has a direct affect on the outcomes of their stories in the game?

They had to find a reason for Liara not to be part of Shepherd's party this time, so like it or not, this is the path they chose. How little they reveal of her story in the last two years is up to them.  What happened to Liara is not important to the main game story here, which is about assembling a team to fight the Collectors, not "the rise of Gangsta Liara".   All you need to know is it's been two years, she's changed and she's not joining Shepherd this time and for her own reasons, she doesn't want to tell Shepherd the whole story.

Besides, we're in an age where an original IP game is not just a game but a franchise, so the business plan is to have multimedia roll-outs, whether we like it or not.  Comic books and novels are part of the roll-out.  At least Bioware actively involved in the stories in those medium to make those stories part of the canon.

I see the novels and comic as the same principle as playing ME2 after having played the first game - you don't have to read them if you don't want to, but they give you a richer understanding of the story and characters.

Now this is rich. Reading that makes me even angrier. If they have a better explanation for her behaviour, PUT IN IT THE GAME. You don't have to lay it out as detailed as it may be possible in a book or comic (which most people won't own), but damnit, it's not too much asked to PUT IT IN THE GAME.

In fact, they did.  If you do her quests and choose the right dialogues, you can get her to tell you about how she found you and why she has a vendetta against the Shadow Broker.  The writers didn't leave it out, you just weren't thorough enough.

She lost her mate(us), Finds out that a Group both she and Shepard hated might be able to bring her loved one back to life if they had my corpse, the galaxy's most powerful information broker has my body with plans to sell it to a group of aliens, lost a Good friend while getting my corpse back and then had to give my corpse away on the Hope that Cerberus could revive me.
It's been two years since those things happened and I would be suprised if she didn't change, I understand why she is going after the Person who cost her a friend and almost sold my corpse to the collecters.

Wow, I guess you only get to know that stuff if you were her LI? That changes my dislike a little bit, was pretty upset that she was going to ride a friggin desk instead of coming to save the galaxy, like what kind of ridiculous decision is that.

But still, her character changed way too much. 2 years wouldn't be enough. There was almost nothing of the ME1 Liara and it was just strange. Sad and strange.

I did encounter that dialogue, thank you very much. But it wasn't nearly enough to explain the drastic changes in her character, especially not why she would treat Shepard the way she does. The scene is either badly done, or they've indeed outsourced an important element to another medium. Neither explanation does BioWare credit (fortunately, that's one of only few complaints about an otherwise fantastic game). As for the rest, don't be ridiculous. A game such as this is NEVER only about the main story, that's why we like it so much.

She's an alien for crying out loud. Aliens are not to be trusted. They smell when you back over them in your car and forget to hose out the wheel arch.

You don't think a treacherous quest, having to make deals with very bad people, the trauma of losing a friend and then having to give up the body of a loved one, both through the schemes of a powerful gangster that prompts her to want to plan a long hunt for revenge would change somebody??

I guess not everyone is as hardy and tough as you.

To this, I agree. I think I may have regretted not romancing her in ME1. Liara secured her spot as one of my favorite ME characters after they released her comics. Definitely a new side of Liara that I'm liking.

Not particularly fond of Liara, to be honest. She's a bit more compelling now, but I still find her to be rather vapid compared to other characters like Thane, Garrus, Tali, or Jack.

She most certainly did have the abilities to become a successful information broker. Liara said pretty off-handedly that searching through BS for real intel was just like excavating at a digsite. She might not have had the contacts in the first place, but, obviously, she had no trouble networking.

I think Liara is simply struggling with piles and piles of emotional baggage that makes her seem cold and unfeeling before you complete her Observer quests. She's still emotionally awkward in the sense that (imo) she can't threaten people without sounding fake (which I actually kind of find amusing now rather than disturbed by). It also seems that she still lacks self-confidence in herself enough that she believes even though she risked life and limb for Shepard, Shepard wouldn't appreciate all she went through to bring Shepard back. That being said, she's still compassionate enough to be willing to die for Shepard (again) just for the fairly small chance that the Lazerous project would work (even if it was a little selfish on her part, but can you blame her?).

What I'm thinking will happen in ME3 is that Shepard (regardless of whether you stayed loyal to her or not as a romance option or if you romanced her at all) will be the one to save Liara from herself. I'm pretty sure she's gonna persue this new goal of hers so fanatically (as she did with the Protheans) that she's going to lose sight of a lot of things and that it'll be Shepard's job to bring her back...At least that's what I'm hoping. x3

Edit, and yes, I'm a MAJOR Liara fangirl <3

This is the perfect response to all those "Liara is a coldhearted b**** now" posts.  It's everything I've been trying to say for the last 5 days, but haven't been able to put into words.  Excellent job, StolenThunder.

From one loyal Liara fan to another, I say WELL DONE!Image IPB

I could have cheated on Liara but I didn't so obviously Is till care about her.  Was pretty upset that I wasn't given the option to say goodbye before going on the suicide run and was a little irritated with her caring more about taking out the shadow broker then the the fact that I was alive and back.

Liara is fantastic.

And after you get the dialogue about her and Shadow Broker and what she did for you. Wow...it makes complete sense. 'I couldn't let you go...'...she's been through so much with losing who she loves, hopes to bring Shepard back, losing her friend and the guilt of giving Shepard to Cerberus.

I just hope BW doesn't lose the thread they've started in ME2. I'd hate for her to show up in ME3 as if nothing happened with SB (which I doubt.)

I think we could hope for Liara to return to more of a prominent role in the third game, but I think BioWare's just gone too far with Liara's change to turn her back into the Liara that a lot of people fell for.

I really like how Liara has changed. I hope in ME3 she comes back as a full party member and Shepard can resolve her romance sub-plot by making her even more ruthless or convince her to go back to the way she was. I think that would make everyone happy.
