Yes, it's strange and unacceptable that Bioware doesn't care about it.

This problem also occurs with Leliana. I can't talk to her now without the initial conversation (where she wants to join) popping up. It also makes the game unplayable as the graphics get all screwed up and I cannot zone out of the area. I am going to have to play my current character without her in the party.

I have this problem /again/ on another playthrough, I have to backtrack a long time again this time (not as long as on my other playthrough though), but it's getting seriously on my nerves especially since I got NO warning at all about being disconnected (it's supposed to automatically log me in) so I was totally unaware of the problem until I tried talking to Shale again hours later.

I like this game but with all the bugs and other technical difficulties I think I'm just going to shelve it until Bioware gets it's act together which is a damn shame since I really wanted to finish this.

I had the same problem in Orzammar. Played out fine and smooth until I should've met with Oghrem. I never met him, though through the deep roads everyone acts like he's in the party (even giving me dialogue options directly addressed to him o_O), i hear his voice and he also interacts, but he's not chooseable, nor visible. I simply went "wtf" at first, but then the Shale's bug came up and decided not to lose this awesome character, rolling back to a 9.30 hours earlier savegame (in which the bug hadn't occurred yet).

People told me this bug is due to the toolset. So i uninstalled it, removed any and every track of it (including my custom created items) and reloaded the "clean" savegame.

This may work... as it sounds related:

How to fix Felix in Sulcher's Pass - I do not know if some things may be missed by doing this but, when you cannot get Felix to speak to you these are the steps.

1) Create a shortcut to DAOrigins.exe with debug mode enabled flag. Run Dragon Age by using that shortcut.

2) Save your game before doing the following so, you can always revert back to what it was before doing this.

3) Press the ~ key (pronounced Tilde) This initiates a console window which you cannot see.

4) Start typing the following: (As soon as you start typing a lot of debug info will appear at the top of the screen and will vanish after you type the following and press enter)

runscript zz_shl_debug

5) Set the Plot Flag to HAVE COMMAND WORD

6) Warp to location. Choose SHALE OFFER. This will give you the quest.

7) Warp to location. Choose Village of Honnleath.

I had the bug without ever touching the toolset or any DLC beyond Shale, so that's definetly not required to get the bug.

Me too. I haven't installed the toolset yet. Wanted to beat the game first. I made the mistake of playing with the toolset the first day of Neverwinter Nights and I never bothered to play the official game because, I was having too much fun with the toolset.

That's a workaround I guess, but how will that work out if I had already completed the Shale achievement (aka his quest), I guess it'll cause all kinds of trouble; right?

Help!

I can not talk to Shale, it gives me the first two conversation options the incorrect keyword or leave alone.  And if I try to talk to him the game bugs out and I get stuck on a linear plane with no clipping etc nothing works.

Is there a way to fix Shale?

Same here. Come on Bio Ware, at least tell us of what's going on.   <_<

You can probably fix it with the console script I listed above.

The thing is that you "only" cant talk to him. I can level him up, change his "crystalls" and so on, but no talk.
I can select him to join me and he fights, but yeah, he doesn't like talking to me anymore. I suppose he has chosen to ignore me,  B*****d! He, he.  =]

Can we have some official word on this please? I can live with the crashes, the memory leaks etc, but this really breaks the game for me.

Who is responsible for customer technical support? EA or Bioware?
EA
is selling this game, so normally they should take care about it, move
their lazy arses, contact game developers on their own and provide a
customer with a proper answer instead of sending such pathetic e-mails
like below. Noobody has to care about any forums, especially customers
asking about the problem solution.
I sent an e-mail about Shale to EA using a technical support page and after a long time of waiting I received an answer:

"We
are sorry for the inconvenience caused to you. The issue you are facing
could be an issue with the mechanics of the game. Unfortunaetly at
customer support we can only help with issues with the game itself, we
cannnot make changes or correct game bugs. You can however report this
at the official forums, so that the game developers can take a note of
it and investigate this further.

Official game forums can be found at the below given link: -

http://social.bioware.com/..."

This is ridiculous what they're writing, because:

"This
forum is for fans and owners of Dragon Age: Origins to assist each
other with technical questions. Official game support is provided by
Electronic Arts, but fans are encouraged to try to assist each other
here."

It's just purile, stupid and pathetic way they treat the customers.

Anything on this at all? My cd key is in the registry I've read about every thread on this subject and I really don't feel like redoing all those hours of gameplay only to be bitten by this again.

I outlined a fix for this bug in my thread:

http://social.biowar...x/331250#331250

I've had to do this three times at various points in different games and have never had an issue. You should be able to debug Shale at any point in the game.

Remember these are user to user support forums, BW RARELY chimes in. For official support you have to open a ticket.

Yeah, but referring to my ticket above you can get such a pathetic answer like I did.

gah I was looking at this thread because I have no problem with shale and was just curious. Then when I loaded my game talked to him while in the dalish camp he gave me the generic "speak the activation" dialogue. Gah! What's up with that. Shale's thaig also disappeared from Orzammar. Thankfully wardens keep is still in the map. Leliana won't still talk to me as well... bummer

Read above. You can run the script zz_shl_debug and then use Set Plot Flags to say HAVE COMMAND WORD.

Then when you talk to him tell him the word and you should be good to go.

This is a community work around until they hopefully address this with a patch.

Numerous posts above have detailed instructions on how to do this including my own.
