After beating ME2 twice now (seeing both renegade and paragon options), i have been thinking alot about how they are going to continue the story into ME3, and i have a few predictions and ideas that crossed my mind:

1.Chose between the Alliance and Cerberus.

We all know that ME is notorious for its Paragon/Renegade system, and what better way to cap of the trilogy then to force you to choose between the two organizations as you head off and fight the Reapers? Obviously Alliance will be for Paragons and Cerberus for renegades. To me, this makes perfect sense. Early on in ME2 you have a mission where you infiltrate an Eclipse Mercs base and recover encrypted Cerberus data. You get 3 options: return it to TIM, turn it into the Alliance, or keep it for yourself. If you choose to keep it, EDI tells you it will take a whole year to encrypt this data that would simply damage Cerberus. I wonder what else will be happening in a year....hmmm.

Actually, this single mission was what got me thinking about this. Its a perfect set up for ME3. Alot of people are complaining about working for Cerberus (i think its a brilliant plot twist myself), but to people who love being Paragon, what better way to get back at evil Cerberus, then to use that data to help under mine them, and use your knowledge of Cerberus and TIM from ME2, to help the Alliance shut them down. Paragons can enter the final fight with Reapers with Alliance support and a clear conscience.

Conversely, Renegades could choose to stay with Cerberus. The Alliance and the Council pretty much disavowed Shepard after his(her) death, and didnt even offer the least bit of support in fighting the collectors. All the council did was investigate, and even that proved pointless. As a Renegade player, i would have no qualms in sticking with an organization that gets the job done, instead of playing politics with a Council who doesnt even believe in a Reaper threat, even though they are bearing down on the galaxy.

2.Returning Characters.

Alot of talk has been around the fact that it seems like there is simply way too many characters and choices to import to ME3, but i would disagree. I think by comparing ME1 to ME2 would reveal what the plan for returning Characters in ME3 will be.

For love interests (1 & 2), we have:

Ashley
Kaiden
Liara
Tali
Miranda
Jack
Jacob
Garrus
Thane

Just like in ME2, i do not believe all will be squadmates. Im sure all will make cameos and have dialogue trees since i believe BW will be rewarding those who remained faithful to their ME1 LIs, while also continuing dialogue with ME2 LIs.

Ashley, Jacob and Kaiden were all weak characters, so i doubt they will be squadmates in ME3, and they may not even appear as LIs at all in 3, i can see them moving on because they were upset you joined Cerberus (or just moving on in Jacobs case). But even as LIs, i think their role in 3 will be minimal.

Liara was an intriguing character and LI, and her cold attitude in ME2 was with reason. I dont predict joining the squad again, but she will most likely play an important role in ME3.

Tali and Garrus are great characters, and they too will play important roles in 3, as LIs, and even as Squadmates. i can also see Miranda returning as well as LI and squadmate.

Jack and Thane were also some great characters from 2, and i could see them returning as LIs, but im questionable about Squadmates. Jack is too much of a free spirit, and even said that once the mission was done, she was gonna go her own way. Thane of course, is dying. i think it would make quite a gut wrenching scene to see him die from his condition in ME3. I think these two will appear in the beginning, have additional dialogue if they were your romance, but leave/die fairly early into the story.

As far as Squadmates go...both Wrex and Grunt are outstanding characters, but are similar in skills, so it would be difficult to imagine having them BOTH in the squad. Conversely, i do not believe they will leave either out, since alot of people wanted Wrex back. So...the obvious conclusion is one dies, one joins your squad. Yet again, this would be another harsh decision and gut wrenching scene for ME3 (one kills the other?), why and how they would come to that is beyond me, but im pretty sure the writers would be able to come up with a plausible explanation

Which leaves us with Legion and Mordin. I believe both characters will return as Squadmates. Mordin is simply an outstanding character all around, and legion seemed interesting, but his time with us was pretty short. But it brings up another story idea...which i will flesh out in the next section. Zaeed is a DLC character, so i doubt he will be a squadmate, but he could make a cameo as an NPC.

Ok...so by my tally, we will have Tali, Garrus, Miranda, Wrex/Grunt, Mordin and Legion as returning Squadmates.  That only makes 6, so there is still plenty of room for new squadmates. If they use 10 or 11 like they did in ME2, then thats an additional 4 or 5 characters. Plenty to flesh out your squad while also adding some fresh faces.

3.How to fight the Reapers.

Legion added a whole new dynamic to the Mass Effect Universe: that the Geth are more then mindless killing machines. Legion even explained that the difference between Regular Geth and Heretics was simple ones and zeroes, two is greater then one, but three is greater then two. Everyone wants to know how Sheaprd is going to kill the Reapers, that it would take more then all of the Armed Forces of the Alliance and Citadel, well...there is a whole Army of Geth that can aid in that.

I can see ME3 becoming about recruiting factions to aid you in fighting the Reapers. Using your influence as an Alliance Officer and Spectre to recruit the Alliance and Council Forces (Lord knows they need convincing). Using Legion to help recruit the Geth. If geth can be programmed to turn from heretics back into normal geth by a virus, its not impossible to program them into soldiers that will fight the Reapers...and it could also lead into some great scenes between Tali and Legion, as well as the Flotilla in general. The ethical questions from such an action are Mass Effect bread and butter. Also, Shepard can use his knowledge of Merc Units from ME2 to recruit Blue Suns, Eclipse, Bloodpack, Batarians, and other mercs from the Terminus systems.

Shepard is one of the few to travel between the Terminus, Perseus Veil and Citadel Space...so it puts him in the unique position to be able to recruit armies from all sides of the galaxy, which is whats going to be needed to fight a force that threatens the galaxy as a whole. ME2 was about recruiting individuals for a single mission, i believe ME3 will be about recruiting whole armies for the greatest of missions.

Thanks if you read the whole thing, i know its long, but these ideas have been rolling around in my head since beating ME2, and they just simply make complete sense to me on how ME3 will play out. Whatever the case, ME3 will be completely epic.
