I am playing the physical DVD version of Mass Effect 2 for PC, version 1.00.

Processor:  Intel® Core™2 Quad CPU    Q6600  @ 2.40GHz
Clock Speed:  2400 MHz
RAM:  Total 1.99GB  Available 1.25GB  Used 1.00GB

Display Adapter:  NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT
VRAM:  512MB
Driver Version:  nvd3dum.dll,nvwgf2um.dll,nvwgf2um.dll 191.07 [8.16.11.9107]
OS:  Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Enterprise  Service Pack 2 (6.0.6002)
Directx:  DirectX 10.0  (Mar2009) or later

Sound Adapter:  CREATIVE SB Audigy
Driver Version:  P17.sys [5.12.1.2018]

I am experiencing a crash that closes the game..
In Jarrahe Station you are required to restore power to various parts of the ship.  I have a game-closing crash when I go through the research lab.  More specifically, I enter the room, restore power to the lab, and proceed to the computers that control reflective panels for a laser.  If I activate a computer, and the beam courses across the room, my game crashes.  If I activate a computer that doesn't affect the beam's direction, nothing happens.  I thought it was because my computer couldn't handle the laser rendering or something, but when I activate a computer and run away and face a wall or just go anywhere in the room, the game still crashes and closes.  It happens no matter who's on my team and whether I opened the Iridium containers or not.  It is the act of activating the computers to reflect the laser around the room.  I have only experienced this problem in this room, on this station.  I have the choice to avoid this mission, but I haven't played much of the game yet, so it's hard to say it wouldn't happen elsewhere.

Any suggestions?

I got the same crash, I posted this earlier with the other crashes mentioned that are about watching electrical effects.

What is support doing about this bug?

(I did upgrade my video drivers, no effect)

If you have windows 7 try uninstalling your nvidia drivers and reboot, and let windows 7 install its own ms drivers unless you previously had the ms drivers of course. People has mentioned this fixed their bluescreens and crashes in me 2 on another forum.

Hmm. Saved just before activating the laser.

Then turned resolution down to 800x600.

Activated the laser, no crash occured.

Then turned resolution back to normal.

Not a long term solution but gets you past the crash point for now.

Hope it helps :)

Found a work around. Also had saved right before activating but that did not make a difference.

What does is not to look into the beam (as per bug what I mentioned). Stand as far as you can from the screens, so little of the beams are showing.

Worked for me! Hope it works for you guys too.

Make sure all is like it should. Turn around when press last bam you should hear something and a door opens.

Confirmed, turning down the resolution to 800x600 and turning every other graphic-gimmick off fixed the problem for me. Hell, the game looks ugly in this resolution!

i experienced this crash as well. it is because of blue beam.

first set the number 4-3-2 then at the end set the number 1. this helped me to get past this crash.

but there it is another crash:

Mission Reaper IFF

in the reaper ship's core room when the core door is opening a blast of blue beam make the game crash. i don't think i can get past this one :)

is there any solution ?

Val, I had the same problem with IFF too. It's all about the same glowy lighting effect I fear :(

How I got through IFF:

1) turned difficulty to easiest possible. Let my squad mates fight the initial waves of husks untill dead while looking the opposite direction of the glowing core.

2) tricky part. May take 5-6 tries: After initial husks are dead, start shooting at the core in short brusts to activate more monsters, never looking at it for more than a couple of seconds at a time. There are three stages when husks start to come out... when they do, turn away, let squad mates take care of them while looking away. Rinse and repeat. If you look at the sodding core for too long you will crash...

@ rheia

i managed to get past mission reaper IFF used the same way.

i set all graphic options on lowest possible on windowed mod and never look at the core door when it is opening or closing. its make a sound when it gets open the you must turn and shoot it. that make the trick for me.

finished mass effect 2

no more known crashes

I'll add that I also have the same issue, Jarrahe Station:Research Lab. Game crashes when looking into the light. Resolve: Don't look into the light! :)

Windows 7 64Bit

NVidia 8600 GT (Version: 196.21 WHQL)

I also have the Jarrahe Station research lab crash, but only if the beam hits the wall from the first mirror, not when it reaches the end point.

I don't have the reaper IFF core crash.

Looking at people's specs above this only seems to be an issue with Nvidia cards. Interestingly the drivers don't seem to matter.

Windows 7 64-bit

Nvidia GeForce 9800GTX (driver version: 186.16)

hmm as for me, i could look into the beam for a while before it crashes.

Got to say, damn frustrated about it. i wish the omni tool can activate objects from a further distance!

And yet, just another one of the reasons I will NEVER play a game on a computer.
Nothing but a pain in the Element Zero zone!
I gave up on playing games on my computer(s) 8 years ago. NEVER again.
I'll take a console ANY day over a computer when it comes to video games.

Same problem, haven't been able to play since this.

I didn't have the time though, but now I have and I would like to continue playing the game.

It's a very specific problem, and it has been 2 months since release.

Windows 7 64-bit, Acer Aspire 5920G, Intel Core 2 Duo T7300 2.0 ghz, 4gb DDR2, 8600MGT.

From looking at this thread you could get the impression that something's wrong with NVIDIA cards.

I've got no problems with Win XP Pro 32bit, Core2Duo 8500 and an ATI HD 4870 1GB.

I had the same problem. Installing the latest nVidia drivers sorted it. If only it was as easy to solve the problem of the game crashing when loading Quarantine at Aria's station. I get a fault in kernel32.dll every time, no matter what graphics settings I try. If anyone has any suggestions I'd be grateful, since EA Support can only tell me to turn everything down, install new drivers and check the minimum requirements....helpful....NOT.

Come on EA and Bioware, this is a bug in the game, please fix it instead of telling me it's my fault.

Running the latest nvidia drivers. Crash, crash, crash. Even if I'm 800x600 in windowed mode.
