I am a big fan of the Mass Effect games. I liked the first one a great deal and also came to like the second one. I had been anticipating its release for some time. Admittedly I was disappointed at first in the combat play. In time though these became more minor and I was able be drawn into the story. I think that there were good features in both games that should be used in the third game, each game then becomes a part that contributes to the dynamics of the third game. Here are my suggestions:
Use Weapons Training instead of Ammo Training:
When you think about it, ammo training doesn't make as much since. It comes out to what type of bullets you can use and then how effective said bullet is. The characters should be allowed to alternate between different ammo types as a way of adapting to different opponents. Each gun, on the other hand, has different handling that must be considered when using them. Just because you've been taught the basics doesn't mean that there isn't room for improvement. Practice makes perfect, right? So weapons training should be available in Mass Effect 3, and ammo types should be interchangeable. If necessary, they could limit the amount of improvement available in this area if they feel it will make gameplay more reasonable.
Allow previous unique abilities to return:
In Mass Effect 1, characters received different benefits based on the class that they chose. Soldiers could reduce damage taken, Engineer's could improve their shields, and biotic powers had a wider range of effectiveness. These traits need to come back as they were important in establishing differences between different classes. They provides different incentives based on one gameplay preferances. I kind of wonder why they reduced their effectiveness. In ME1 you needed a tech specialist with you if you wanted to obtain extra items and the like. A biotic could provide better support by more effectively disabling enemies. They could use these to add to the uniqeness of each class.
Allow more options for the obtainment of Weapons:
In the first game it was felt that there were too many items that you could find. It seemed to pile up and only overload the players inventory. But in the second game there were too few options for obtaining better guns. They should allow you to find, or buy, more guns in Mass Effect 3 but limit it from the overwhelming options of the first game.
Allow more options for weapon upgrades and customization:
I liked the research projects that were available to improve the performance of your weapons. But I also liked having the ability to add modifications to my weapons to make them more effective. I think that they should combine the two, let the player research a few projects for different upgrades but also allow changable modifications so the user can have more unique weapons.
Allow more interactions between characters and allow continuing romance:
I think it would improve the story overall if the characters were to talk more often while you travel with them. They don't seem to comment enough and could use more conversations with the player and with each other. More conversation would allow different personalities to be shown more completely and add to the experience. Romances should be carried over to Mass Effect 3 in a way that allows special continued conversations to those who sought them in the first two. More conversations would make relationships mean more plotwise.
Allow more choices for Armor/Weapons for you and for your squad:
I liked how they did the armor in this game, There were more individual pieces, each having the possibility to contribute different things, and the option to customize color and appearance. I think that they should expand upon this by adding more options and allow you to also customize the armor choices of your team members. You should have the option to improve each member of your squad and achieve various results.
Allow there to be a romance scene like what was in Mass Effect 3:
I know that there was some criticism regarding this but I don't think there should be much of a problem. That scene was a powerful tool in conveying the depth of the relationship and contibuted greatly to the plot. It wasn't something done for the sake of perversion and was kept modest. There weren't any objectionable details in the scene, just the passion itself so there would be nothing wrong with having a that kind of scene in the third game. Other games have gone further than that without causing any major problems.
Allow something like the Mako to return for missions but keep the planet scanning:
I think that this would be a good combination of both games. The Mako was missed in the second game as Planet scanning/probing took its place in finding resources. Most would probably agree that scanning/probing is a better means of finding resources, but miss being able to fight through some missions with a vehicle blasting its way through. I suggest creating some missions where the Mako is used to compensate for this loss and return the experience to the gamer.
Some things that I hope will be in Mass Effect 3:
I hope that they reveal what the Quarian people look like. As a person who romanced Tali I think it would be a great contribution and I eagerly await this revelation. The mystery of the Quarian people has persisted for long enough, hopefully Mass Effect 3 will grant this new insight.
I think those who romance someone should be able to address the issue of marriage. It could even be a personal side quest to introduce your character's love interest to your family, even meet theirs. I realize that there will be important battles coming up, but such personal moments should be enjoyed, especially in times like that.
I also like the idea of Shepard being able to have a child that is shown at the end of the game, especially a cross-species child. This would allow Shepard to be more than just a soldier, gives him another role to perform. He'll then have to balance out protecting the galaxy with raising the child/children.
I hope that Bioware considers the suggestions that I have made. As a fan I eagerly await the release of Mass Effect 3 and the suprises that it will have in store for us. If I think of any more suggestions I will add them to this forum or to other forums. Hopefully these will work for most gamers out there and create a truely spectacular game. Best of luck Bioware!
I wanted to add to this list:
I think that weapons should go back to being able to affect any kind of enemy. Each one should still have its good and bad traits, for exampe a shotgun has a lot of power but slow rate of fire and damage decreases after a certain distance.
I think they should fix the ammo system. Since weapon clips are universal, ammo should be shared by all guns so that you can use prefered weapons throughout the game. For instance, If I'm using and assault rifle that runs out of ammo, why not take the clip that's in the pistol and move it to the rifle?
I also like the idea of being able to take missions that will change the galaxy. These include things such as settling the Quarian-Geth issue (either peace or war), deciding the fate of the Krogan and Rachni, and other possible missions.
Give Shepard absolute freedom to do as he sees fit. Let me explain, gamewise you essentially do this but plotwise he has had superiors. In the first game it was the Alliance/Council, in the second it was Cerberus because the Council returned his Specter status but didn't seem to want to be involved with his missions again. Shepard now stands to benefit from the freedom of not being obligated one way or another. It would be interesting to see options to use this.

Open up the Citadel. One of my few complaints, and a minor one at that, but only including the human embassy from ME1 is kind of silly. I understand the desire to focus on the "other side" of the Citadel, but the way it's set up in ME2 makes virtually no sense.
Bring back everyone from ME2, leave out the ME1 squad mates that were left out of ME2. Ashley and Kaidan were bland story-wise and useless gameplay-wise. Liara's role in ME2 is far more interesting and vital to the story than she was in ME1 as the blue broad who almost faints in every scene she's in and acts all uninformed about things. Wrex is similarly more significant in ME2 and thus more interesting (and besides, Grunt as a squad mate is a much better fit than Wrex at this point).
More customization of the Normandy and the Captain's quarters. Upgrading the Normandy was great, but there were no visual cues or visceral experiences outside of CG to tell you anything was different on the ship. Anything from work in progress areas to restructured rooms post-upgrade would go a long way towards making it feel like what you were paying for is significant. As far as the Captain's quarters go, if you're going to add things like fish and models, you have to go all the way - I don't want Mass Effect: The Sims but let us make the room our own as much as you do with Shepard him/herself. Also, there should be a reward for purchasing/finding all the items you can use in an area of the room - say, if you acquire all the ship models, you get a new outfitor whatever. Again, it's not The Sims, so there should be some gameplaysignificance for these things.
More variation in the look and actions of your squad mates. We should be long past the era where characters sit/stand in one place the entire game. Let's see some movement from these folks; let's see some interaction with other squad mates/crew members. Everything about your squad mates feels so static and lifeless until you talk to them. You give them these giant living spaces, and don't use that space at all. Just bad design. As far as appearance goes, it is pretty illogical to see characters like Jack and Miranda in battle in their outfits. You guys go to such lengths to immerse the player in this universe, and silly design decisions like that take us right out of it. Squad mates have to wear some kind of real armor in combat, it's just common sense, and that armor has to be customizable to some degree. I absolutely do not want a return to the ME1 system, most of the armors were ugly as sin and it's not fun selling/scrapping 40 useless sets of armor every 5 minutes; having said that, ME2's complete lack of an armor system for squad mates is not an improvement. Much of ME2 benefits from your "addition by subtraction" mentality - this is one area that doesn't.
Finally, if you're going to have love interests and sex scenes, treat them with the maturity that you do the violence and drama that dominate the series. Not saying I want ME3 to bolster my spank bank, but to build up a relationship over dozens of hours only to see it culminate in barely more than a hug and kiss, or spooning on a bed with clothes on, is ludicrous. I don't know how you guys took yourselves seriously with those post-suicide mission call-ups to the LI. I don't mean to be antagonistic, but come on. If you're that concerned about appealing to everyone, do what Infinity Ward did and give the player the choice to filter out the more adult scenes of the game. Also, carry that relationship over to the story missions - let's see some interaction between Shepard and the LI off the Normandy, and make it feel like a real relationship. It would give a much needed personal weight to the plot for Shepard. I don't want a damn soap opera or anything, but I also don't want a ridiculously insular romantic subplot that seems to have no effect on Shepard's actions or life at all.

2. Character Continuation / More Storyline Altering Decisions.
It seemed like in ME2, which i have done 2 playthroughs with (One from scratch, and one with a import of my ME1 shepard), that most of the critical decisions made in ME1 did not result in serious changes. Im excited to see what bioware cooks up for us in ME3, It seems like a return to the Alliance / Council is an option vs continuing to work with Cerebus.
It would just be nice to see the characters in ME2 and ME1 continue into ME3, and have all of your decisions that you made playing the game over and over, lead to REAL tangible changes in how the game plays out in ME3.
Real tangible changes PLEASE! None of this "wrex has a doppleganger" and "the new council doesn't want to see you" crud. Let's see our previous decisions actually make a difference!
Agreed with this. It was one of my bigger disappointments, that although the decisions made in ME1 were *mentioned*, they didn't really have a dramatic effect on the story in ME2.
I mean, without giving too much away (since this is supposed to be spoiler free, yes?), whether or not I saved the council had zero impact on anything I did in ME2. It was mentioned, and it altered a "visit" to the Citadel. But those were only in terms of dialogue. It wasn't as if my decision altered a key part of the new story.

In a similar vein, Tali's had the knife on her boot for two games now. I was hoping she might knife legion in the flashlight, but no such luck.
As for changes from ME2 specifically:
More heavy weapon ammo. Was paranoid about firing them at anything less than a praetorian my first playthrough.
Just give us the jump button instead of faking it with cover leaping
Take another crack at the mining mechanic.
I'd like to see stronger continuation of romantic relationships than we got with ME2.
More party banter. Worked brilliantly in dragon age.
To slap the Turian councilor when he inevitably says "Shepard was exaggerating wildly! It's only a few hundred nearly unstoppable AI dreadnoughts!"

Party banter as seen in Dragon Age: Origins. It wouldn't make the game any lesser if it didn't have it, but it'd pull us so much more into the immersion of the game.
On a related note, perhaps have characters talking in the Normandy and discussing things such as how the last missions went, or maybe just chatting it up. Sort of like elevator convos, but perhaps even put in a few cutscenes that involve Shepard. Like the personal issues we've seen with some characters and you forcing to choose. Or having LI's argue over you.
Gameplay was great, keep that in.
Make the game as long as you can! It should be rightfully long as the last in the trilogy, so it must be epic.
Tali and Garrus must come back at the bare minimum. Not saying that just because they're some of my favorite characters, but they are practically an icon in the series, having stuck with you since the first installment. It should only be right if they stuck through to you to the very end (provided they survived, of course).
More Normandy space battles would be nice as well... after all, the final fight against the Reapers would be like The Battle of the Citadel on roids, and I'm sure there would be many major skirmishes before the finale.
I liked the probing idea with the planets, but perhaps spice it up a bit. It was all very in-universe so great job on that, but perhaps add a little something... like pirates whom you can wander into, or maybe listen to news reports on the planet if it's civilized, or wild animal cries heard from the probes. Perhaps have a mission where a probe of yours is reported missing, and you need to investigate why?
The romances were wonderful. Include the cuddlings at the start, and expand more so on them! They were one of my favorite parts of the game, and having Shepard and his/her LI together often would really set the tone of how much they care for one another.
The humor is great, keep adding in fun bits, I really enjoyed them.
The music is epic, so well no complaints there.
Being able to go onto Earth, or see it in a cutscene would be great, and to see how the alien members of your party respond to the homeworld of our very own.
Perhaps, have Characters move around more so, like chatting, etc, like I mentioned earlier. Would make the game feel a little less static.
What else. Ah, the Renegade/Paragon interrupt system is great, keep that in and improve it some more! On a related note, maybe incorporate Renegade/Paragon specific armor/weapons? Just a thought.
And on a more selfish note, how about allowing us to play with Shepard more? I want to see more of him/her after this trilogy is complete!

Take us to Earth!
Not as a side quest but as part of the main quest. And make the city we have to visit as big as the ME1 Citadel. I would love to see how the writers and devs envisioned Earth in the ME universe.
Bring back our LI from ME1.
Don't forget them, please!! Let them come back to the squad
and let us resolve the situation!
More different looking helmets and more armor pieces!
I love the helmet with the little visor in one eye. I used it just for the looks! Get us more of those! In the armor side of the house, more variety also. I felt the shops didn't have enough pieces and the bonuses were not that impressive.
Bring back the vastness of the Citadel.
One of the things that I loved on ME1 was the Citadel and it's quarters. Different places, lots of people to talk to, wonder if there were fishes in the water. I kept looking at Councilman Anderson's view and wishing I could jump down and go talk to my old friends.
Keep the Hack/Bypass minigames.
I LOVED the hack minigame. I liked the bypass one. But they were both improvement from the previous version.
Keep the new combat mechanics.
Awesome improvement compared to the first installment. No complaints here.
Mining planets needs some improvement.
Let me tell you that the thing I hated the most on ME1 was the Mako. So much so I almost quit the game. The controls were so weird and I just couldn't make sense of them. I asked my husband to pass my first couple of Mako missions so that I could continue playing. You can imagine my relief when I heard they got rid of the vehicle. I liked the mining game but it does get old by mid game. Maybe we could make the scanner faster? I know I'm dreading my second run just thinking I'll have to mine all the materials again.
Keep the Commander’s Cabin or give us an apartment!
I loved the cabin. I’ve heard you can even invite people to it! I didn’t get that option since I didn’t romance any squadmates. The fact that you could get pets and ships and decorate it, change the music, all great!
I think I haven’t forgotten anything. Just thanks for giving us great games!

2. Mele like in uncharted 2, instead of a simple strike u actaly have to fight mini game.
3. Invetory and upgrade sytem more like ME1. If there could be a happy meduim between ME1 and ME2 as far as the inventory system.
4. Fluid animation,IE GOW, GRAW AO2. My shep feals stiff with his movment during combat.
5.More weapons, alot more.
6. More armor, but keep the customasation. If you could customize armor with all the difrent types you had in ME1, I would have spent 60 hours just on that.
7. I want the entire citadel, Omega ect. When you give us theses large palnets, with beautiful vistas it is dispointing when you realy cant get past the space port.
8. Earth
9.Recource stock market, were you can turn your recources into cash, or trade in more abondent recources for less aboundent one.
10. Weapons and Armor sold at markets.
11. COOP either a Horde mode or what ever I justt want to meet my buddy snad there sheps online . No story just awsome gameplay and waves of all the diffrent enemy types.
12. I want to choose from both ME1 and Me2 crews to comprise my final crew, and a bunch of new charctors.
13. Squad mates need armor. I dont like the fact that team members go into battle in there casual close. That takes me outa the game. I also like the ability to spec there armor for what I need them to do like in ME1.
14. sqaud commands. Sqaud commands were alot better a whole lot. But there is always room for improvmnet. the enginere class should be abailble to deploy a over head drone. This would give you a top down picture of the battle field, and the ability to issue more complicated squad commands.
15. Enemy AI. if all these suggestions are implemnted you will have to beef up the enemies.
I dont care how many discs you need to put it on, I will buy it, I wll pre order it I will buy the bounus adition, but only if you implment these changes lol. if not I will just buy it used

Things I liked:
~ I was BLOWN AWAY by the fact that you took away the old RPG stereotype of, "You'll always arrive at just the right time." ***Spoilers*** I was shocked to discover that if I didn't go rescue my crew right away, most of them died. I didn't rush to get them the first time as I assumed it wouldn't make any difference what so ever. Well done.
~ I liked the variety of the loyalty missions, in that in Samara and Thane's you had to do two new and unique things. Needing to follow a person on the catwalk was cool, and needing to remember to take certain actions to attract attention felt unique and fun.
~ I liked getting the follow-up emails. I helped me feel that I was having an effect on the world. I looked forward to checking my in box.
~I liked being able to customize my cabin. Yeah pets and music!
Comments:
-Regarding my squadmates:
~ I loved the scenes where Joker interacted with EDI, when Miranda and Jack hit it off, and Tali and Legion reacted to each other. LOTS MORE please.
~ I agree with the comments about my crew mates asking about Shepard. Having Kelly and Joker check after Horizon made me feel like my Shepard was expected to be effected by events, which made Shepard even more real to me. Plus it was nice to feel like someone cared about my Shepard. Even a generic, "Hey, you've been pushing really hard. You ok?" would help me feel like I'm interacting with, not just acting upon, my squad.
~ One of my favorite parts of DA:O was the conversations my party with each other that had nothing to do with me. I loved that. It made them seem like real people with live and feeling of their own. Hearing Jacob and Miranda talk about old times, or Garrus and Thane discussing assassinations would really add depth.
~ I know this gets tough as a lot of people have died, but please don't side line our squad mates. I loved that Garrus and Tali were back. There must be a way to continue to have them with you if you kept them alive. New squad mates were fin, but none of them meant what those two did, as I had a past relationship to build on.
~ If I don't get the chance to actually interact in a meaningful way with my ME1 LI, I'll be extremely upset. I don't need butterflies and rainbows, but come on. Instead of my feeling free to move on, which I think might have been the intention, I avoided the ME2 romances from the fear that getting involved won't mean anything, as they'll be sidelined in ME3.
~ Someone mentioned the idea of having 8 squad slots and 12 possible recruits. I LOVE that idea. Talk about re-playability.
-Mechanics:
~I much preferred the PC key commands and mapping from ME1. I still reflexively hit J and am surprised that my Journal doesn't pop up. And having Use/Cover/ and Sprint as the same key was ANNOYING!!!
~ I would have liked to be able to lower the mouse sensitivity even more then was possible. I turned an inadvertent full 360 way too often.
~ If you can show the stats for armor, could you please show them for weapons as well? So one was weak against armor and another was weak against shields. What were the percentage points of difference? I would be happy to stick with the ME2 inventory system if I could make informed choices as to what to bring with me.
-Other:
~ The Mission Summary screen was....weird. I thought it was a great way to give equal value to both combat and non-combat play styles, but I did find it jarring.
~ I will happily scan every planet you throw at me, if I can sell excess resources for money. I couldn't always afford the upgrades I wanted, but had enough iridium to flood the galactic market.
~ I would love to be able to reply to my messages. Maybe not all of them, but I was annoyed that I couldn't tell my Mom I was sorry for not contacting her, or tell Kaiden to either buzz off, or contact me when he gets sorted out. I can see a little bar at the bottom with two reply options. In the Kaiden example one might say, "I understand" and the other, "We're through." You would then see the message you sent pop up on the screen.
Thank you for a great game. And thank you for taking the time to listen.

i agree with you on this, some of the messages even read like they were tailored for a response from shepard...but you couldnt respond. Although most were just "thank you for blah blah blah", but there were some that i really wanted to respond to.

1.) I liked the Mako, hated the planets! It was very fun to explore the foreign planets and would not mind (some) planets to have very well developed Hammerhead levels. I'm looking forward to seeing what the DLC is going to offer in this regard.
2.) Less planet scanning and increase scanning speed. There's a lot of planets out there and the scanning does get pretty boring sometimes. Sure it's fun to grab A LOT of element zero, but at some point you just kind of sigh and go. All right let me scan this so I have enough resources to purchase upgrades.
3.) Bring back Squad customization and some inventory management. When you deleted all the inventory I thought, cool they revamped the system. I didn't think that it meant that all squad members lose the ability to have different armors! I like purchasing and acquiring different gear for my squadmates, and don't like being given only two choices.
4.) Weapon upgrades are great and I would rather keep it the way it is. The reason being is that to me there is really no point in having different weaponts like Avenger I or Lancer III or even Katana IX. Once the best weapons become available a character is going to naturally gravitate towards equipping those weapons. That being said however, though I like the weapon upgrade system I do not like the lack of variety. There's plenty of heavy weapons to choose from but very little in terms of sniper rifles, SMG's, Assault rifles, and pistols. I want some varieties of different weapons and want to be ecstactic when I acquire the so called ultimate weapons, such as SPECTRE gear.
So bring back some really darn good weapons!
5.) I need to be able to sell stuff and have some items to sell. Earning credits through missions alone is a terrible, terrible idea! Once I realized that my credits were dwindling and that there was no way to get them back by selling, this immediately soured my mood. Why? Because I had been spending money buying probes and fuel scanning planets, instead of buying all of the gear I could acquire. Need to be able to sell! (And also no garbage like in Dragon Age, I did not like discovering I was collecting junk.)
6.) I need to talk to my squad mates! They need to talk to each other! Why the heck couldn't I have conversations with them? Why don't they talk to each other? Squads need to communicate with each other much more often similar to how it was done in Dragon Age, perfect example? Alistair and Morrigan.
7.) Don't like the fuel component that was added. I get it, you're trying to add some kind of drama to exploration. Oh no, if I run out of fuel while travelling to this system I will have to burn resources to get back to base! This would have been a great idea except...
All I have to do is go to one system, explore it, return to where the fuel depot is, resupply, and go back to another system. Also there is no mysterious planet or new civilization to explore, side missions sure, but nothing that really makes you feel like you've pushed the limits. When all the systems are pretty much charted or show up on your maps for you to explore, it doesn't really feel like "exploring." Oblivion had exploring, if you continued passed that mountain maybe you could find a village, a chapel, or even a lost fortress with a powerful artifact. Mass Effect is too linear to create that kind of feeling, you will never find a chapel or a village because you can really only go in a limited direction. You can either go here or you cannot, there is no alternate route, no shortcut, no going backwards. You either go or you don't, therefore the fuel mechanic and exploration mechanic fails in this regard.
Exploration with fuel needs to be removed, it should be more about entering a system no vessel has seen before and discovering the contents inside. The most rewarding thing for ME would be to have a very entertaining side quest. Otherwise, I'll just go back and get more fuel and come back when ready.
8.) Characters that do not have dialogue trees are NOT AS INTERESTING TO TALK TO! Did I enjoy Zaeed's stories? Yes! Did I enjoy not being able to have a conversation with him? NO! If you're going to put characters in the game they need to have dialogue trees and Shepard needs to talk to them. Having them talk on the intro and loyalty mission does not count! They need to have more interactions! Otherwise they seem like unfinished placeholder characters which ruins their appeal.
9.) Do not like locked portions of MY ship! If I'm the commander I should be able to walk around where ever I please! If I can walk into the woman's restroom as a male I should be able to talk into the port observatory and the AI core without needing a squadmate there! I like to be able to sight see and then fill the empty spaces with characters, rather than fill it with characters THEN sight see.
10.) Lastly, I am not liking the loading screens and a lot of the areas feel a lot smaller now. The citadel looks AWESOME, but it's so dang tiny that there isn't much to do! As much as I love the new Omega, Citadel, Illium, they are all great areas but they still felt way too small! The side missions are bigger in that they are lengthier, but I miss the parts where I could go in the vehicle and shoot up some nasties. I understand some people didn't like the vehicles, but that was because they needed some refinement, not getting removed completely!
The loading screens are 100% immersion breaking. I do not like seeing Illusive man's status reports nor do I like the loading screens. Do they look cool? Yes. Do they ruin the experience for me? Oddly, yes! I did not mind the elevator rides in Mass Effect, hated them on the Normandy but as far as the citadel and other places I took the elevators so I could hear my squadmates spout random things or listen to news reports. If the loading screens stayed on the Normandy, that's fine. But bigger places should have elevators that let you listen in on squad mates while using fast travel as an alternative.
Not all the elevator rides were bad and the masked loading screens were way more interesting than the blatant ones. I appreciate that you tried something new but this made the mass effect experience feel very segmented and very on the rails. ME 1 felt a lot more seamless and immersive, as did Dragon Age which was also a very linear game. Please bring back the immersion of the Mass Effect games, that was part of what I loved about the game.
That's all I can think of for now, I hope these wishlists are taken into consideration.

- Please reconsider the limited fuel/probes mechanic. It doesn't add anything to the game other than the repetitive task of returning to re-fill consumables, and actually discourages exploration because money is limited but resources are plentiful, and you cannot sell mined resources for money. Therefore, attempting to explore various planets and systems, even if it's just for the neat little bits of lore in the descriptions, actually penalizes the player because that's money spent on fuel that you should be using for upgrades.
- On a similar note, I don't feel that ammo made combat more enjoyable or interesting. At least allow ammo dropped from enemies to automatically show up in your inventory (?) when they drop, because scouring a cleared area for ammo really breaks up the mission sequence.
- Please restore auto-mapping for actual mission stages, not just for cities or ships. The objective cursor is not nearly indicative enough and it'd be nice to have an idea of the layout of the area as well as what side rooms to explore without stumbling into plot and potentially leaving the area. If lack of mini-map was meant to add to the challenge, I'm not sure it works because you could just save anywhere and what it really does is cause reloading if you stumble around the wrong corner.
- The dependency on cover puts certain classes at a disadvantage. Playing a Vanguard I can honestly say that I didn't really use the supposed strengths of the class all that often, because charging into melee was impossible in some situations (across large gaps) or simply suicidal in others (say, vs a bunch of Husks/Scions). The cover system is much easier to use and makes for better level design, but I would like some re-design of the classes to reflect this.
- Please remove the red vein effect that occurs at low health. I don't need to see that to know I'm low on health, that is what the health bar is for. The effect is distracting and blocks peripheral vision, and makes it more likely for you to die. On a similar note, please bring back the easy-to-read health/shield bars from ME1. Half the time I can't tell if my squadmates are taking damage until they die.
- I really liked the more varied level design, even the one mission where you had to just walk across the falling ship wreck. It gives a nice break from just landing somewhere and shooting things, and would like to see this continued in ME3.
- I preferred the ME1 advancement system, as with the different number of points required to buy higher ranked skills it's very easy to wind up with essentially wasted levels/points, and oftentimes each level doesn't feel like much advancement because you have to save up points to get something in 4 levels.
- I'd like to see some larger and more varied environments, perhaps more alien cities. Many of the stages in ME2 were repeats of smoky neon-lit corridors, but the places that stood out were Tuchanka and Illium. I'm also not that big a fan of the "dark" thing and would really like to be able to return to the brighter parts of Citadel.
- Resolution of carried-over decisions, of course, but also some explanation for some of the seemingly nonsensical things in ME2; for example, the sudden incompetence of the entirety of Alliance/Council forces in ME2 felt like a forced plot device to facilitate working with Cerberus regardless of other considerations, and I'd like an explanation for this as well as avoiding a repeat of such.
- I would like to retain the party characters from ME1 and 2 instead of picking up all/mostly new characters yet again. It would suck for those players who worked hard to ensure their squad lived to have them reduced to cameos because they might be dead in someone else's game. I understand this is hard to implement, but the characters are what a lot of people grow attached to. There's a world of difference between a squadmate who comes along with you to save the galaxy and an NPC standing in town, no matter how important that NPC is in cut-scenes.
- Related to the above, it would be nice for all the party members to have plot-relevant commentary, as in ME1 and 2 only the initial people seemed to ever give their opinions after most plot missions. It would also be nice to have everyone have a more integrated role in the plot, though I realize that's a logistical nightmare given the number of characters who could be dead.
- Customization for party member armor/appearance, because watching Jack or Miranda walk around hazardous environments with just a breather mask, or being somehow unable to get Garrus to repair his armor, is rather jarring. I get that it's meant to make them look "badass", but for me it is immersion-breaking given the general thoughtfulness that goes into the rest of the setting, and I would at least like the option to change that.

-Same-Sex romance. Better late than never. Preferably not a 'token' one as well (a friend of mine is big on Kaiden)
-Make the romance plots matter! Now, I don't mean super-important, but it'd be nice to see if a Shepard romancing Miranda results in a different story in regards to Cerberus and the like, for example. Or a romance with Thane to carry on to his natural hopefully epic death scene in ME3 (if this is where you're going, hypothetically)
-Third game inclusions for romance are fine, but try to limit to 3 new people tops... most players will now have at least played ME2 (and many ME1), and WILL expect true payoff in ME3. This means you Liara/Kaiden/Ashley.
-Visit Earth, one way or another. I don't mind it not being a 'hub-world', but it should at least be a good stage in the main story (beginning, middle, or end, whatever you want!)
-Perhaps Mars as well
-Helmet toggle! Shepard should also have considerably more options. I felt so...limited when it came to parts, and I couldn't even do ANYTHING with the DLC armors, so they're collecting dust.
-Squadmate armor customization! Now, I don't mean anything in-depth like Shepard, but mixing up pieces and upgrading parts of armors should be important. Also, don't pull a Jack/Miranda/Thane/Garrus on us again... make the armors/'costumes' acceptable next time...
-Biotic balance. ME1 too powerful, ME2 too nerfed, ME3 should look a little more impressive with more usefulness (biotic users don't LIKE shooting guns to take down defenses, yet should still be challenged if it changes so they don't have to)
-Vanguard tweaked. Great changes to it, but it doesn't seem as balanced as the rest (maybe that's the point?).
-STILL better squad and enemy AI. I've seen better, so I know it exists. It gets so darn predictable pretty fast.
-This isn't Gears of War, don't focus so much on the cover system. Like with most concerns, use *balance* in ME3. I never even needed to use cover in ME1 (felt invincible or dead man walking, but cover didn't affect this anyway), but felt so forced to use cover in ME2 it seemed silly (for a game, not real life haha). Make it useful, yet not totally needed. Shotguns as a result of the ME2 system, were only useful with a Vanguard.
-Inventory. Make it exist. Just don't have a complete mess of the ME1 system is all. People LIKE choices, even the Halo console kiddies (no offense, I like Halo)! But like with everything balance and making choices *matter* is key. No 'VII' 'VIII' 'IX' thing anymore, but still make it really feel like you're buying something when you go to a shop.
-Keep upgrades, but don't make it the focus.
-Don't shaft characters. Yeah, yeah, it's 'Shepard's Story', but its not, not really. It's the galaxy's story to me, and ours. This means ME1 squadmates, ME2 squadmates (regardless if they can die, since most will have at least one playthrough where everyone lives!), whoever the Council is, Udina/Anderson, SPECTRES, *ME1&2 SIDEQUEST CHARACTERS*, and so on, *need* to have a strong role in ME3. We don't want 'new', we want 'important'.
-Prefer for nearly every ME1 and ME2 squaddie to be back on the team. Not a new team. No matter how much you hype em up, they won't matter to me. This is the conclusion/finale, not just another episode.
-Forget the high school 'dark and edgy', it just looks childish for the most part. If you're going dark, go all the way or go home. I wanted so much to deal with Jack, but her story of abuse was recounted more like a teenager yelling at her parents rather than truly deep psychological trauma. ME1 had this right with the indocturination idea, but ME2 just tried to be dark for the sake of being dark, and that always looks silly.
-Related to the above; use half majesty of ME1, with half 'dark' of ME2, and double the epic of ME1's ending, and that's what we're pretty much expecting throughout much of ME3. If this means cutting new sidequests, so be it - keep the tempo going, while providing even more content than ME2.
-MAKE DECISIONS MATTER. I totally, completely understand ME2 being a contained 'tunnel' of a story, as a middle-act should be!, but ME3 should be all the forseen and unforseen consequences of what you've done. Don't leave things as 'change Anderson's lines and outfit' and 'just add news reports!'... nope, whole larger plotlines need to be affected this time.
-Several endings, with different permutations of each. I'm not saying the final level should be different, but the whole sequence before, during, and after it need to be tailored to what has been done before. Don't shaft the players of ME1 and ME2 by forgetting their decisions as well. ME2 seems full of foreshadowing, so do the deed now.
-Larger hub-areas. Instead of Illium, why not the main capital? Instead of Feros, why not Articus Station? Lore centric areas now please
-Art/design direction for the vast majority of the game is VERY awesome, but try for a better selection of planet types next. This ties into the squadmate armor thing; Jack needs to cover up if I'm taking her onto an uncharted ice planet.
-Vehicles, but neither put them 'on rails' nor have the boring expanses of ME1. Again, balance. Have an exploration element, yet with a defined endpoint, and more more cliff climbing lol.
-Fix the whole scanning and resource system
-More weapons, or at least make 'upgrading/customizing' weapons a very unique affair. The problem with the upgrade system, just as with having Spectre and Colassus gear, is that everyone is the same in the end. Allow for branching upgrading of weapons instead of a uniform 'priority-centric'(hmm do I get this one, or this one first? OH WELL, I'm getting both of them anyway!) system.
-Reapers better be as strong as they're built up to be, as well as Shepard's allies/tools to be as useful as they promise to be.
-Don't cater to the 'pure Paragon' and 'pure Renegade' thing. Many like playing as a sort of grey in-between (my RacistShep is Paragon to humans, but hates all others, though has a little fetish/weakness for asari). If it only comes down to two main endings, that kinda sucks for a lot of us.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That was a big one, but I hope it was useful! In short form:
-homosexual romance along with the many hetrosexual
-romance matters, choices matter!!!!!
-lore-centric locations and plot development
-armor and weapon customization and choice
-class balance
-all/most squadmates returning
-battle AI
-proper inventory system
-everything MATTERING, not just Shep choices, but characters and ideas otherwise
-big on the 'epic', include in smaller doses the 'oooo pretty' and 'dark, gritty!'. Add in dread though. Don't make it so every planet is all safe.
-Larger and better selection of environments
-Better vehicle system than Mako
-Fix scanning and resource/credit management
-wildly varying development conclusions for the story, hopefully (mildly) mattering even down to whether you did things like shut down the AI on the Citadel, or took down the Blood Pack base and such.
-Go to that heat-sink system idea. We're dealing with ammo in ME2 - ugh.
-FAR MORE crew interactions. Again, I know its 'Shep's' story, but having the only two dynamic convos be arguments between Tali/??? and Miranda/Jack (as shown in ads, so no spoiler) is ridiculous. I was looking forward to seeing Thane and Mordin exchange philosophies, or Grunt getting ticked off at Jack's attitude, or Zaeed trying to understand from Samara her approach toward 'revenge'. Instead, they just stick in their little hidey-holes, again. Bring this into dynamic focus in ME3, without sacrificing it for the same of the epic main plot.
-I don't like this UI. I see two faces on my bum, and cartoon veins when I get hit. The older versions shown during expos looked MUCH better, as I only need to see the names of my squad, not faces, and they're fine with health bars to the side. The veins sucked - just make the screen wobbly a bit and add red gradiant to the edges of the screen... we'll get the hint.
-I don't mind 'mission complete', but I do dislike how it was handled. Make it FAR less intrusive, since I don't expect to be reporting to TIM anymore, nor do I want to return to the Normandy directly after a mission.
-Related to the above; quit with the 'mission-centric, get in, do stuff, then get out' thing. It breaks immersion a TON. Allow the feeling of a location and story in.. don't throw it to us and once we get anywhere with it yank it away. This isn't a TV show with episodes... give us time to do everything we want. Even my shooter fan friends agree with this stuff. We're looking for DEEP, not QUICK BANG BOOM.
So all I ask is for:
•Romances to carry over and be more meaningful.
•A mixture of the ME1 and ME2 squadmates to return with maybe a few new ones as well. (fingers crossed for batarian female)
•And finally just add in female drell, turians, krogans etc OR simply give a description of what they generally look like in the codex.
So really thats all and thanks again for the awesome game Bioware.
EDIT: Oh I almost forgot, for the love of god make sure EDI returns.
1. The option for a cure for Thane
2. the romances to have more conversations and development, actually all squard members. I liked getting feedback and opinions on what happened in certain missions. I miss that from ME1.
and how it could be better for Mass Effect 3:
The choices
that you made in Mass Effect 2 were as diverse as they come not just in
Paragon/Renegade actions but in how you could interact with other
characters. Having choices that not only progressed the plot, but
progressed relationships as well, made the whole experience that much
more immersive. You were the one calling the shots, you were the one
flirting with a squad-mate and what not, not some scripted avatar. By
doing this you became attached to who you liked to be around and
distanced yourself from those who you didn’t. You feel loss for when
they die too. That's what Mass Effect 2 did so well, it made you feel,
emotionally, which in turn sucked you in and made messages, characters
and events more powerful. Keep it up BioWare.
The side missions are fantastic in
that they each have their own unique story to tell that can sometime end
up where you never expected. A solid improvement over the cookie-cutter
levels and designs from the first. But to improve upon this, I thought
the approach and discovery of side missions were not as well done as the
first Mass Effect. Instead of scanning for anomalies, what about
distress calls you could come across, missions that come out of the blue
while on of the main missions. Also, whenever I came across the news
reports I noticed they weren't added to my journal. Why not? Apart from
that, the diversity in the missions and the level of interest they
brought with them was enough to motivate me go out and find them, but
there could have been more incentive.
The cast of characters and their
diverse opinions, traits and stories made getting to know them
interesting, impulsive and rewarding. You care about them, every
backstory has an event of which strengthens the bond between you and the
characters, even the conversations you have with them and the responses
they return help as well. Listening in on what your crew has to say
about current events and getting to know everyone made it real tragedy
towards the end of the game (you'd know what I'm talking about if you
finished the game, I'm not spoiling anything). I found myself looking
for my squad-mates on the Normandy without really noticing, caus I
wanted to hang out with them, get to know them; me, not some avatar! All
I'd ask for in the future would be some more plot defining decisions so
that the ending (or the journey towards) can really diverge in some
surprising ways and ultimately be different than other options/routes.
Voice acting, animations and art design
were all superb, story was interesting and better than most out there,
but the important thing was it had purpose and gave you motivation and
drive. For it wasn’t the story that made me feel though, it was the
characters and that’s what made the story good. I doubt this will change
too much in the next iteration as it's only gotten better over the last
two games.
The action,
while not perfect, flowed really well. Especially when you got into the
motion of things, it just worked and fitted together. It's just whenever
the cover system got the better of me a few times, which was especially
frustrating in dire situations, it killed the flow a bit but is wasn't
too hard to get back to it. But it would be nice if the cover mechanic
flowed really nicely like Gears of War’s does. I know, we don't want to
dumb the game down, but still, the action in Mass Effect 2 is still not
the best part relative to other titles out there that thrive on it, not
to say it's not deep either though. If the cover let you move from chest
high wall to pillar to vaulting in a fluid motion (ie. look to a piece
of cover, if the outline glows orange (or whatever color it could be),
when you direct the movement joystick in it's direction and press the
cover button you'd stick to it, or shimmy to another one etc.), mixed
with a few more varying situations and wallah, Gears of War can suck it.
Oh, and while I'm at it, where the hell were grenades?
What I didn't like about Mass Effect 2
and/or how it could be better for Mass Effect 3:
Scanning. How tedious a task can you
get? And it’s compulsory if you want to upgrade your things enough. What
a contradiction, it tests your patience and rewards you for it on a
small scale. It needs to be changed before Mass Effect 3. Keep the basic
principle in that you have to find resources somehow (and I like the
fact they gave you a purpose for looking for resources in Mass Effect 2
unlike the first) but make the experience fun, make it a mini-game, make
it addictive, anything, I want to find these resources but in a way
that's convenient and rewarding in how fun it is as well not just in
what I get for doing it.
The lack of RPG
elements in relation to the first Mass Effect irked me a bit too.
This time around it felt more like an action adventure game more than
an RPG, with the direction of dialogue being the only exception. I want
to get XP for killing someone as a reward, I want to loot their corpses
and be surprised by what I find due to the number of weapons, armors,
upgrades etc that I find. I want to suit up my comrades too. Why do
I have so little to consider when it comes to leveling up my character?
If anything, this would be the change I'd want to see most in Mass
Effect 3. Sure, the menus in Mass Effect 1 weren't the best but did the
concept have to be dropped completely for the sake of simplicity? I
don't think so, there's always another way as my paragon Shepherd likes
to point out (I have an idea for a mock up menu, I'll consider putting
it up if the thread does well, explaining through words is a pain).
Loading screens. Another annoyance.
Sure they fixed the elevator problem, but I was one of the ones who
loved the elevators (to an extent). While I can understand where people
are coming from in relation to the elevators in Mass Effect 1 (ie. there
were loads of them, they were annoying if you had to backtrack etc.),
I though the premise was genius and I was happy people had thought of
the idea. But what made elevators for me so great was the fact that they
kept you in the game world, they never took you out like loading
screens do. The loading screens are merely reminders that we're playing a
game, not in the galaxy of Mass Effect, and that can kill the mood. If
elevators were to be added to Mass Effect, I would like to see them
revamped. Why not merge the premise of a loading screen with an elevator
to make it less boring and more productive. Things like having a
progression bar represented by the levels you are going through, a
screen to look at that can give you hints, team mates in the background
chatting who you can talk to also. And why stop there? Shouldn't the
whole experience like Mass Effect be integrated? For example, if
I wanted to go to my main menu, could the camera zoom in to my
Shepherd's hand as he pulled out his Omni-Tool to reveal a displayed
menu? Vice versa with PDAs and the like. What about going down in the
shuttle? It could be like the suggestion I made before with the
elevator, except a progress report on-screen somewhere displaying the
flight path of the shuttle. I don't have to be taken out of the galaxy
of Mass Effect and I don't want to, just think of how immersive Dead
Space was with it's entire menus being projected from Isaac's suit
in-game, that's the kind of immersion I'm talking about and want to see
in Mass Effect 3.
New
things I'd like to see implemented in Mass Effect 3:
I'd also like to see
bigger hubs in Mass Effect 3, the equivalent of 5 presidiums. Like
having each major planet/station like Illium or Omega to be as big and
diverse as the presidium in terms of different areas of the place and
size. It would make the galaxy look as big as it should do and
exploration more eye-opening. Big vistas and views on display like
Illium’s on each would help also get that feeling of a huge, bustling
galaxy filled with life.
Why is every alien race so... human? Could it hurt
to have a little diversity in the way aliens look and act? Like the
Elcor and Hanar? Where were they in all of Mass Effect 2? Their
prominence in the galaxy wasn't felt anywhere but a few references. And I
know humans are supposed to be the most diverse out of the species and
we’re supposed to be able to relate to these aliens in some way but why
is it so hard to come across a Salarian that looks distinctively
different from another one?
And finally, the lack
of vehicular combat. No I didn't think the Mako was fantastic either,
but there was no reason to drop it completely from the game anyway. It
added that extra bit of diversity to the combat and while it was hard to
master, you were good when you did. More varying ways to establish the
combat would be fantastic, gunships were introduced, why can't there be
sequences where we can use them too? Just look to Halo when you want
fantastic controls for vehicles on a console, we stand on the shoulders
of giants and it only makes everything better for it.
Now, I'm gonna get shunned for this, weird looks,
apathy and out-cry, but it can be done well and can add extra to
longevity. Co-op in Mass Effect could be fantastic. Pinnacle station for
Mass Effect 1 was a realization that simulated wave defense of enemies in Mass Effect could work to a degree but
with your comrades and the refined combat of Mass Effect 2, it would be fun as hell (if the gameplay would let it).
It's fun in Left 4 Dead, it's fun in Gears of War and it's undoubtedly
fun as hell in Halo 3: ODST so why not Mass Effect 2. As to how
the fiction about why there are so many other people called Shepherd
running around in the same galaxy could be fixed, I have no idea. They
could be just unnamed soldiers in relation to your character in terms of
the fiction, everyone’s looking for some Creds at some arena (the same
fiction could also adhere to competitive multiplayer as well), but other
than that, if co-op were included in Mass Effect 3, I'd be one happy
camper. But not just co-op, but a whole online presence as well, the
Cerberus Network is just the tip of the ice-burg of what can be done.
Un-nerf Biotics
At least a bit. Them not effecting barriers and shields is one thing, but it makes no sense that armour renders them useless too. Have it so biotics do less damage to armour, but still do more than just make an enemy have two left feet for a few seconds.
I keep seeing this come up and its been annoying me. There is exactly 1 defense that biotics can't take out. Shields, and that is what overload is for. People keep mentioning that on insanity biotics get super-deluxe-ultra nerfed because everyone has defenses to spare. But it even says on the description of the difficulty, intended to be played after Hardcore, meaning you're supposed to have access to bonus from prior play. I myself played through as an adept on veteran for my first play through (never used ME1 adept, powers didn't look cool) and the only times I had issues were when I didn't take note of where cover was.
Now for on topic:
I agree with everyone who's been saying that more ME1 people should return, I do NOT agree that Wrex should not. My vision of Wrex's return is temporary, but it has him coming to shephard seeking aid because the Reapers are attacking Tuchanka(?). Definitely bring back Ash/Kaidan because of the beautiful conflict intro dialogue between them and Miranda. And Liara, I mean now that she's an information broker (kind of) she would be a PERFECT side quest source.
I disagree with the notion that the skill system is different than the original. It is slower I will grant you but it takes EXACTLY the same number of points to fully upgrade, the only thing that changes is when you get your specialty class. Original ME skills maxed out at 10 and the ME2 ones max out at 4pt costs with a 1-2-3-4 setup. 1+2+3+4=10 (see bowling set-up) And even while yes the overall levelling of skills is slowed, the impact is actually increased, by the end of my Vet run, again playing an adept, my "Warp" was chewing through barriers of just about everything like it was a freshly baked cookie (tryied to come up with something really chewy lol).
Aside from that, if you're going to have achievements do something in game, could you go back to ME1's set-up where once you got it, the achievement told you what, if anything, it did...
And MAYBE an online duel system, its kind of be fun (imo) to watch player controlled adepts, soldiers, engineers, etc. duking it out.
P.S. if you do bring back characters and want to surprise us epic nick-names are SO the way to go. I looking really hard at Garrus-Archangel on this one...
*edit*P.P.S. Additionally, LEGION FTFW (for the freakin' win)
Bring back the MAKO or...
Don't get me wrong, scanning the planets is quite cool, specially when there's a faint signal or anomaly down there...and yes, i loved the idea of upgrades through rare elements found on planets...but...after the 3rd planet you scan to the point where u deplete it...it gets very boring and seems like a waste of time...waste of time that you have to do in order to upgrade...which makes it worse...it's obligatory.
The MAKO on the other hand gave you more action, shooting, exploring etc. (that and the new shuttle looks like it was designed using Lego...by someone who is 5 years old)
What was wrong about the MAKO and the way it was used...that the planets were bare...no plants, animals, trees or whatever...there were no easy paths to take, drops were too sheer, too many jaged rocks and the like and you just bounced around hopelessly and ridiculously getting stuck in between sheer cliff and sheer cliff...getting out was a b****. The jump jets were close to useless having no stabilizers...if you put jumpjets...equip the vehicle with thrusters that bring it upright and keep it level in mid-air...all that...and the physics engine was quite terrible.
so...bring back a better verion of the MAKO or...replace it with a new type of exploring craft...i suggest something like the Raptor in UT 2004-2007...or Halo's Banshee...in terms of flying and controlling...the mouse + w,a,s,d and space or shift would make excellent controlls for a flyable dropship/attack craft.
As for scanning the planet...you could make it something like highlighting places where the automated scaner thinks there could be something and it's up to the player to manualy scan for it and place the probe...or...well...that's all i can come up with.
Bring back the overheat system for weapons.
I'm a sniper...ME1's overheat system let me hang back and take them out with all the headshots i wanted while my team was busy distracting them...or hanging back with me taking their heads off.
The change from ME1 to ME2's ammo system was like moving from a very comfy chair to an iron mayden.
As a sniper...i tend to use the sniper weapon...now i'm forced to conserve my sniper ammo for the stronger enemies...and basicly...i'm forced to use the bloody pistol...and the shotgun which feels nothing like a shotgun.
Bring back variety and choice of Armor and Weaponry for the player and his squad.
As much as i love that i can now have any and all armors i wear in Green...not being able to change the outfits and gear on my squad is not really fun....i get the idea...taking out the MAKO, the crazy number of armors and weapons and mods is a way to make it a faster game and more action oriented...but trust me...scanning the planets takes up more time than all that stuff combined ever did.
More room to explore and more shops on planets please.
The Citadel, Illium and the like were quite...small...i mean it's THE CITADEL...huge Reaper mass effect realy, central hub of the galaxy...all trade, politics and stuff happens on it...and all u get to see is one floor and the human embassy? Here's a place where u could get in your UT Raptor and fly around, dock on another of the Citadel's massive 5 arms, shoot up some back-alley scum, go get new tech...land up at the council, knock them out for having their heads stuck so far up....well...u get the idea.
Don't bring back Ashley Williams
P.S. Your ship is the future equivalent of a nuclear powered submarine...you've got a new fangled kick-ass reactor in there...why exactly would you need to refuel it ?
