WeaponsFirst off, I was never a big fan of the "thermal clip" system from ME2. I understand it's purpose in that it was meant to intensify firefights by having the player reload, whilst also speeding them up by keeping the player from having to wait for their weapon to cool down. However, at this point, it wouldn't make much sense to remove them and go back to the old guns, so I propose that the player be able to choose between clip-using weapons and cooldown weapons.
I'd also like to see more variety in weapons. ME1 had FAR too many weapons of every type, but this was mostly because every weapon had multiple levels. I say do away with leveled weapons, and instead make them perform differently. As for variety, I'd be happy with 15-20 assault rifles/pistols, and 8-12 snipers/shotguns. I didn't much care for the heavy weapons of ME2 so I could take it or leave it. So these weapons would be split about evenly as to whether they used clips or cooldown, and to make up for lack of levels, give them different traits to distinguish them. And bring back weapon (and armor) upgrade/modification, too (I'll cover this later).
ArmorI think the best solution would be a combination of ME1 and ME2's armor system, in that you can swap out entire sets of armor for base performance, but you can also switch out specific parts for individual traits. Armor sets should be much rarer than weapons, possibly no more than 10 different sets for the player throughout the entire game (Maybe more for light/heavy variants), but upgrades should be abundant.
Upgrading Weapons and ArmorI'd really like to see weapon modification make a comeback. However, like weapons, I suggest dropping leveled upgrades, and instead make the upgrades more distinct. Perhaps make there be an upgrade that is slightly more powerful than the standard one, but have it only found through looting, and even then only very rarely (Make them the "illegal weapons mods" we hear so much about). Keep the ammo types on the power wheel, I thought that was the best decision for ME2; but have the player have to find/buy them first. Make them common until the player finds them, after which make them harder to find.
Keep armor "upgrades" similar to how they were in ME2: Actual physical attachments to the armor that increased ammunition (for those who use clip-based weapons) or powered shields.
Inventory System/Management and LootingPLEASE BRING BACK LOOTING. Make the most plentiful items upgrades, and have weapons found rarely, and armor sets even more rare, possibly only looting one set through the duration of the game. Only give upgrades for killing enemies; everything else must be found through opening containers.
When showing the player his spoils, have some way of indicating whether or not he has those items; and if he does; how many, and if he/a squadmate is using them.
This leads to my next point: bring back squad item management. Limit it to only changing base armor/weapons if you have to, but let us at least do something with them.
An Idea: Give the player menu options for looting/management. These could be things like "If I have more than [number] of [item type; i.e., upgrade, pistol, etc.], automatically reduce to omnigel" or "Always convert [item type] to omnigel when looted."
PlanetsGet rid of scanning. Bring back planet exploration. Give the player the option to go straight to the mission location (if it is given to him) or to drive around on the surface. You don't have to bring back the Mako or even the Hammerhead, but give us something to travel the surface with.
ResourcesWith scanning gone, resources must now be found on foot on the surface. Keep the ability/weapon crafting in ME3, but don't make it a plot point/necessary like it was in ME2, keep it entirely optional. The player can choose to spend time looking for resources to craft his own weapons/upgrades or spend his credits to buy them at a shop, or wait to find them while looting.
Player Leveling/AbilitiesBring back the point allocation from ME1. I liked having a lot of control over my character's ability. Also allow for allocating points to AI squad members, but obviously not as much, only combat related items.
Also bring back class-specific abilities. I liked my allies having usefulness outside of combat, and I didn't like my Shep being able to open every container he came across. If you really want to not keep players from opening something, bring back the "special" ability from ME2 (that is, your Shep can learn an ability from another class), or have a small subset of abilities that every class can learn but takes more allocation points to level up or only goes up to a certain point.
Loading Screens
Bring back elevator rides. I don't know what many other people's stance on this is, but quite frankly, I
like staying in game, rather than being broken up with a loading screen. As for "in space" loading screens, show us some display on the
Normandy or whatever ship we'll be on, people doing whatever it is they do onboard, the ship in FTL flight from outside, or bring back the shot of the Relay from ME1. Just no more
actual loading screens.
That's all I've got for now. I'm certain I'll come up with more, though.
