I understand why some people would prefer 1st person in combat, but I don't think it would work for ME. I think the 3rd person overview is important esp. for seeing where your squadmates are hanging out (rather than taking cover)... that being said I have had situations where I'm behind a crate, go to shoot something I should be able to hit, but because of the crate, the cam gets scewed while I stand up to shoot and all I'm hitting is crate. As such, if any changes are made, I would suggest making it 3rd person default with the *option* of scrolling in closer or even to 1st in combat for situations where this might actually be convenient. Overall though I think the combat system is pretty much where it should be.

I also agree that the martyr thing has been overdone. I can see perhaps that some people would "like the option", but the option would only exist in a "you die or *insert LI, whole squad, entire planet, etc. here* die(s) and that has been so incredibly overdone that it's not even funny anymore. Things can be really emotionally intense *without* martyrdom. The cheered hero who sees the people (s)he's saved in the end can be incredibly touching if the scenes are done right.
If there were to be a "martyr" option, as it were, it needs to be done so that it's not a "them or me" thing (as it usually is) but perhaps a consequence out of diverse decisions more-or-less like ME2 end. Bottomline, no "me or the universe" "me or my LI" "LI or everyone else" situations without a way for the player to chose option 3: neither. In my book those situation are cheap dramatical tricks to get "emotional involvement" because you can't make a gripping story (sorry). In a well done story you can always have the feel that you're about to have to die or lose someone and just barely manage to swift-think your way through it and get everyone out in one piece, which is much more rewarding than just taking one for the team, in my book.

And finally, inventory... again I think the middle way would probably best. Having none was actually a bit bothersome in ME2 (researching at the terminal so that everybody has the same gun & being able to swap between 3 that didn't seem all that different wasn't anywhere near as satisfying as being able to set up each person individually), but the giant piles of junk you got in ME1 were a bother too. "We must quickly shut of the deadly machines... Oh wait a minute I need to omnigel some stuff cause my inv is full..." <_<

I think an important part, though, if inventory is returned in ME3 is to be sure that whether or not a character is currently in your team you can compare their gear at the stores!! My main beef with the inv in ME1 was that I actually had to write down the stats of people's armor/weapons to then plod over to the quartmaster and see if the stuff he had was better (as you could only compare Shepard's) and I had to constantly swap around party members just to visit the on-planet stores (or just buy things on the off chance they might be good).

Oh yeah (really finally :P) - Let us disable starter tips, please!

What happened to unlimited ammo? That was one of my favorite parts of ME 1. Suddenly, now I have thermal clips which don't even make much sense anyway. Apparently, the further ahead you go in time the more backwards the technology gets. Wouldn't it at least make sense to make the thermal clips reusable. After all, all they're doing is allowing you to eject the built up heat into the clips; you'd think that after a while they would just cool off and you could reuse them. Besides that, I just liked being careful not to let your weapon overheat. Was it really that bad for some people to just wait a few seconds to let it cool off, or switch to a different weapon real quick. I also enjoyed customizing the assault rifle so that the cool off was faster than the overheat (uninterupted fire for as long as you want.)

Also bring back the bonuses for unlocking achievements.  I was glad when ME 1 came out and I finally saw that achievements were actually worth getting.  And don't make them story line achievements (getting achievements simply for playing through the game.)

There are a few things which I feel could really make the 3rd installment in the series the best ever, sorry if I repeat ideas that have been posted in this huge thread, but here we go:

1. Squadmates for Mass Effect 3

IMO our squad for Mass Effect 3 should consist of most if not all of our surviving members from Mass Effect 2 (at least give us Tali, Garrus, and all the LIs as squadmates) and the original members from the first Mass Effect. I could see a few new members being added for those that may have had their squad killed at the end of the second, but myself, and I'm sure others who worked really hard to make sure everyone survived would feel really cheated if their team was just cast aside like Ashley/Kaidan and Wrex were with excuses of “they have to do this or that and can't join you”. I mean Shepard already has the best possible squad of well developed characters to take on the Reaper threat why would he just cast them aside for a whole new team?
More conversations with and between your crew members would be really epic. It just seemed like a few conversations and one after the loyalty mission and suddenly all your teammates became too busy to talk to you. It would be really great if the team banter on missions was brought back as well. I feel as if this aspect of ME2 was a step back from ME1, the small conversations between your squadmates on missions just helped to add to the feeling like it was all a team effort and to drive the characters personalities forward.

2. The ability to continue our LIs in a meaningful way Image IPB

I'm sure I was not the only one that was somewhat let down in the way in which relationships from the first game played out in the second game. I would like to see the various LIs from the first game brought back as squadmates and given the chance to see them through to a meaningful end, same goes for the LIs from the second game *cough*cough*TALI's FACE PLEASEEEE*cough*cough. I would also like to see the relationships culminate in a more meaningful and mature fashion. I'm not asking for anything like full nudity but I felt like the first game gave a meaningful and tasteful end to the relationship you worked towards through the game and the second game went all DAO on us and didn't have the maturity deal with it properly. I would really like to see Mass Effect 3 give us the proper ending to our relationships that have spanned most or all of the trilogy.

3. Combat

Let me first say that I loved the combat in ME2 it was such a huge improvement on the combat from the first game. The faster pace and higher intensity allowed for some epic fights and the tighter controls were fantastic. I loved the new cover system over the old one but I feel it could still use some improvement in fluidity and moving from cover to cover to put it truly on par with games like GOW. I love the skill sets for the different classes, I've played as a soldier and adapt and am in the middle of a vanguard playthrough, and I'm loving how each class requires its own strategy and style of play to excel at, the unique skills are awesome. I personally like the new ammo system,  I believe having to reload and watch your ammo count allows for a higher level of intensity and personal tactics in a fight, however I do feel like the heavy pistols and snipers were a bit too limited in total ammo to be really effective for classes that rely on them.

Squad AI and enemy AI could be improved to allow for better combat, it would get frustrating sometimes when your squadmates would just sit and absorb enemy fire rather than move to a different set of cover. It would also be nice to see the enemy react to your own tactics a bit better and force you to adapt as well to their new tactics.

4. Exploration

I won't mention the Mako or vehicle here because I know the Hammerhead is on its way (can't wait to see what its like). However I will mention that IMO ME2 lost some of what made ME1 special which was actually exploring other planets. I liked how the side missions were all differentiated from one another, and I enjoyed the focus on the combat with the streamlined missions, but I also miss the wide open planets that we could explore freely. Maybe the best solution would be to have some of both, a handful of focused streamlined missions and a handful of planets that are just free for exploration.

I would also like to see more of the Citadel and various hub worlds in ME3, don't get me wrong I thought each was very well done in ME2 but some, especially the Citadel, were extremely small. Scanning also needs to be either revamped as well IMO, it just became too tedious due mostly in part to the fact that it was just a slow process overall, maybe finding some way to streamline or speed up the Normandy's scanner would fix this issue. Being able to sell off extra resources or exchange them for another resource would also greatly alleviate the resource or credit crunch you would feel every now and then.

5. Missions

Best thing about ME2 had to be the loyalty missions, the focus on your squad and developing them as characters just added so much to the emotional weight of the game, but I was slightly disappointed with the length of the main story arc as a whole. Overall there were only a few missions that dealt with the collectors directly relative to the squad based missions. Another issue was the length of the final mission, if compared to the Ilos/Citadel finale of ME1 it came up really short in terms of length, although don't get me wrong it was pretty epic.

A few things I think would be really neat to see in ME3 would be more missions involving a second squad. IMO this aspect of the final mission really was what made it awesome and engaging for me. I think it would be great to give your extra team members a purpose during more missions in ME3, I mean what is the point of having the best team if you're only using two of them most of the time. I think it could also give a greater sense of strategy to your mission because it could succeed or fail to certain degrees based on who you pick, whether they have the proper skills or trust you enough.

Sorry for the long post, just had a lot I needed to get off the top of my head, if I think of anything else  I will post it. Thanks Bioware for doing such a fantastic job on this epic game, best I've ever played by far, and thanks for taking the ideas of the community into account, IMO it’s what makes you guys one of the best developers out there.

Weapon Slots, instead of preset slots for one weapon of each type. class would get weapon ability but instead of having just 1 type of shotgun on a mission, a player could take two. This would allow that there are different weapon styles in a single weapon type.

We have that right now already with the Evis versus the rest of the shotguns. This would allow that a Vanguard could take an Evis for longer range while still taking a Claymore for the close range stuff.

You could also increase weapon slot sizes are the game progresses to make things more interesting.

Soldier would have 3 Large weapon Slots and 1 Small Weapon slot.

while the rest of the classes would have 2 Large Weapon Slots and 2 Small Weapon.

I would like to see the Mako Return.

I would also like to see a Batarian teammate, and possibly even a Hanar teammate.

If anything, I want Wrex and Liara back, and I want the majority of the ME 2 team back. I wouldn't mind seeing Aria join the team.

Multiplayer, specifically the ability to use your campaign character to fight against others (or, if people don't like the idea of all those humans running around fighting, the ability to make a multiplayer character of any race...within reasonable boundaries (no hanar, volus or elcor, cause obviously, they can't really fight the same way the other races do)).

Another thing that would be interesting to see is to have one of the ME3 squadmates controlled by an actual player: either to have your Shepard and your friend's fight together (one of them would be named differently, so there wouldn't be two Shepards running around) or the ability for your friends to control one of the squadmates you've recruited.

Oh and large-scale battles. I find it strange that every time the player shows up in a warzone, there's no fighting going on to speak of...

A few thoughts, since I've made good progress in reading all the suggestions since my last post.

I completely disagree with all the "1st person" supporters, mostly because of the easier functionality that 3rd person supporters mention. Also, it ruins the feel of Mass Effect and would make ME3 a less fun, too much diverted game. Besides, if it becomes 1st person, it will no longer compete with other RPGs and will be competing against the most popular genre, FPS, and Bioware would be at a disadvantage on a FPS market.

If we have a volus squad member, there's only 1 volus for the job... THE BIOTIC GOD!!!!! lol j/k but seriously it would be epic if he made a return :o

I get this wierd feeling that some of the revelations we'll see in ME3 are that the arrival of the Reapers is a time paradox-related thing and that humans, in their fight to create the Reapers, actually end up creating the Reapers and starting the cycle of the Reaper's harvesting, and Shepard has to break the cycle and change the fate of one universe. I hope this doesn't happen in ME3, as I love a lot of the other suggestions for ME3 story much better.

on the note of the story of ME3, I don't really care either way whether we have to choose to make an ultimate sacrifice or not, or whether to sacrifice our LI or not. I will accept whatever Bioware throws at us storywise because I have faith that it will be entertaining and rewarding regardless.

I had more suggestions, but I forgot. I'll post again when I remember them.

You know, I just saw this clip.  So for ME 3 I'd like to ask this: Can we get a council that doesn't seen to be sharing one working brain cell between the three of them? You have officially pushed the "It's hard to believe, and they don't want to believe it" thing as far as it will go and then quite a bit farther. If you're going to keep this up you might as well give them a personal assistant who wipes up their drool and some comments about how they fly the short shuttle to work. They are stupid to the point where it interferes with suspension of disbelief. If it's required for your plotline, change your freaking plotline, or at least give us some hints that Reaper agents have been stashing indoctrination bugs under their pillows or something.

How the hell are we supposed to believe that these three stooges have been successfully steering a ship of state that contains trillions of sentients from dozens of different species? The shifty looking cow could do a better job!

First and foremost, I would like to see the effects of critical plot decisions flushed out.
An e-mail or radio broadcast seems like the easy way out for ideas they've since dropped.  I'm sure the Rachni will make a return at some point, but if not it will be a major lost opportunity.  Although, I might take this as a hope for a new trilogy set in the ME universe, a new Rachni war trilogy would be great! (Anything really to keep making more ME games!!)

Secondly and equally as important, planetary exploration in the Hammerhead (or whatever) should return.
I don't understand how people were so vocal about hating it in ME1, as it was rarely needed for the plot.  I gotta hand it to Bioware though - the planetary 'assignments' in ME2 are far, far superior to the ME1 offerings, but having say a jungle island on a distant planet with alien vegetation and lifeforms to explore would be so immersive and wonderful.  I will go on record right now and say that will pay for this.  I do not mind!

Different, not 'better' weapons, and more of them.
They started to touch on this in ME2 but I would love to see it expanded.  Now, I love 'looting' as much as the next RPG fan but when the 'best is the best' we all end up using the same stuff.  I would rather have all weapons in a category be rougly balanced, but each would serve a different purpose; in terms of ROF, accuracy, ability to damage B/S/A differently etc.

Finally, and most importantly, one word ... Toolset!!!
This feature need not be a fantasy RPG exclusive.  Don't give us one world to tool around with, give us the Galaxy!  A lot of people, myself included, would love to create something in the ME universe and share it with the rest of the community.  Would it star Shepard and have proper voice over? No, but thats fine!  Voice acting makes ME1&2 amazing but we can all look past that in user created content, and it will give us an opportunity to refer to the character's first name for a change! NWN was at the forefront of user-created content and distribution and I believe that opening the 'post trilogy' ME worlds would be an amazing opportunity to keep this franchise going for years to come.

1. I would like to be able to visit Earth, Mars, Quarian Home World and Thesia.
2. ME2 feels like the Mako is missing. It didn't need to go, it needed better dynamics tuning.
3. I'd like to see what happens when the Illium bartender is introduced to Liara T'Soni.
4. For the love of Keela, I want my spacer femshep to go see her damned mom! Actually, I'd actually like to see that as DLC for ME2, I imagine femshep being treated like a teenager by her smother:
Hanna:"Bunny (nick-name,) You should find someone nice and settle down."
Shep: "Dammit, Mom! I'm not 21! I just saved the Milky Way twice!"
Hanna: "... I know. You didn't come home the first time. David called me. I don't know if I can go through that again. Someone else can do it."
Shep: "Mom,I have a strong team. It's not luck. We're coming back.... If we don't... It won't matter anyway..."
Hanna: "Something that frightening really exists?"
Shep: "Not after we're done. I'm gonna blow them to Hell-and-Gone!"
Hanna: "...So tough, (my little Bunny!) You sound so much like David when he was young. ...When am I ever going to see some grand-kids?"
Shep: "About that... [I'm seeing/I had been seeing/this is] [an Asari Information broker/a Turian vigilanty/an insane biotic ex-prisoner/Captain Alenko/a teminally ill assassin/my executive officer/my ship's shrink, Kelly Chambers.] [We're happy/we don't get get together much anymore/but, I lost him|her at Virmire/but, our careers have separated us.][Two years was a long time to be out of the picture and we've grown apart.]"
Hanna: "[I see./I'm sorry.] [He's cute!/But he's a Turian... Well, they do have... reach!.../I'm glad you're happy (no grand-kids...) ]"
Shep: "[Thanks, Mom!/Image IPB/Dammit, Mom! I just spoke to someone last week who was worried about being seen as a baby-making machine!]"
Shep's LI (if present:) Image IPB...
Shep: "[Mom! Don't check out my [boy/girl friend!]]"

It drove me insane in the love scene with tali when all you saw was the mask on the desk, i need to know what they look like.

I also like the idea of multiplayer, but more co-op since multiplayer heavy games are either laggy or glitched up

Mass Effect 2 was a great game! I've played through it 3 times and love every second!

But the 1 main thing I would love to see, specifically because this next (and possibly final) game is going to be epic with all the reapers and stuff, is a war zone. Many mission show just you fight with your comrades. There is no one else that helps fight with you. If they could pull of a massive battlefield in the next game (geth vs. quarian anyone?) I would be overjoyed with satisfaction. that is my one big gripe.

With everybody talking about the thermal clip thing, I'll just throw this in. IMO the guns are more powerful in the 2nd game. This would in turn generate so much heat that within one or two shots without a thermal clip, the gun could combust/explode/breakdown. That is why thermal clips are implemented. This is also a marketing move to gather in followers from shooter games.  It is a very smart business move.

heheh. I'm on my 5th round

oh ya, and adding to my list, give each squad member MORE THAN TWO WEAPONS. srsly. I found that to be annoying at times. I would LOVE for team members to wield heavy weapons. or give each team member a pistol and then two other weapons, specific for their class. of course being able to equip members with HWs would be pretty awesome and useful in some situations *cough* Haelstrom *cough*

and bring back Emily Wong. I liked her in ME1. she could be a crew member. kind of like Shep's personal publicist (He should be that famous by now)

I like):

- The universe
- The new characters, the directing, it's like a movie (Specialy the introduction scene)
- The new fighting system :)
- The quests. None are alike. Very well done.

I dislike:
.
- Elevator scenes replaced by black screens (?) (Or when we check our weapon payload. I thought the game had crashed the first time!)
- Bye bye RPG. That includes weapons, armor, inventory, levels/skills.
- Too much fighting. Mass effect is not a FPS. (And if you tried to do that, you failed.)
- Weaker story than ME1.
- Scanning planets

ME2 is awesome :) I would just like to see a medley of the 1 and the 2 in the 3.

Squaddy returns. I understand that using ME2 squaddies would get really messy for extra dialogue etc, but it would be awesome if their were 2 char slots in ME3 that you could recruit surviving ME1 and ME2 chars for.

More RPG and exploration too. ME2 was just "go that way". Sure, we could decide what mission to do, but their were no open end elements at all, just 1 linear sprint to the finish.

Small tweaks would be welcome too to help with the flow of the game. I found it annoying to complete a mission on illium to automatically fly away, to just have to fly back down to do the next 1, and then again to drop off data pads etc. Better class balancing would also be welcome.

Which reminds me.

Things from ME 2 I would like to see in ME 3. The ads. They were hilarious. Although I would like to know how the hell the ad boxes in the Citadel knew I was dating Tali...

Moving Elcor. I think that animation was great! Maybe we could see it on an Elcor squadmate maybe? And the Hanar holding tentacles was too, too cute.

The new power system with fewer but more defining powers is a good thing. I also like squaddies having unique powers. (Biotics needs a balancing tweak however. They are too gutted by the defense mechanics.)

The loading screens. I like them where they show relative movement. I liked them while shuttleing about the citadel for example. OTOH when you're actually taking an elevator I'd just as soon see my squaddies chatting in an elevator again. Those were some good scenes in ME 1.

Heavy weapons. I like 'em. (Although I tend to forget to use them, but that's my fault not yours.)

The conversational interrupt system. Very good idea very well done. Kudos.

Mordin singing Gilbert and Sullivan. 'Nuff said. ;)

NPCs who have lives. Like Aria. Sure you only saw her sitting in the bar, but between the mercs and Partiarch you really got the feeling that this was a person who has her own story, and it touched yours only briefly. She didn't feel like a character whose sole reason for existence was to give Shepard some data, and that's a good thing. The fact that you had a mutual aquaintence with Helena Blake helped with that I think.

Having places in the world that spark comments from specific squadmates is a good thing. It is not however an adequate substitute for the byplay they would have in ME 1. I mean we got, what, one spontaneous comment in the whole of ME 2 and that was just Garrus and Tali taking a shot at the elevator scenes from ME 1. I'd like to see elevators, and random byplay and sparked comments in ME 3. No pressure. ;)

Personally i would like a more indepth relationship with the the other characters. For example if you take Garrus on more missions you become closer than a character you didnt, sort of like a best friend. I know it would take more dialoge, but the relationship with the characters is one of the best parts in ME2 I would just like to see it taken futher. Next keep Garrus, Miranda, and Legion for ME3 they are great characters.  Also Fix the mining (I lost feeling in my fingers) or at least allow me to sell minerals for some credits. Lastly some kind of ability to replay missions like traning or something, so i can try missions again with a different team. Either way I trust BioWare to make ME3 even better.
