Hi All,

I just installed ME2 but whenever i go to launch it the screen goes black for a few seconds as if it is about to start then a windows dialogue box appears saying that the application has stopped working and gives the option to check for a solutuion on-line (which achieves nothing) or close the program. I can get the following information from selecting "show more information"

General protection fault!

The game was installed fully to the default location of c:\\games\\mass effect 2. Before playing for the 1st time i logged on and registered for the DLC and installed that too.

FYI: All latest DirectX runtimes installed (inc those that were on the disc) and drivers - Catalyst 10.1 etc.

My system is as follows:

C2D E8400 @ 3.0Ghz
4Gb RAM
Radeon 5850
Win 7 Premium (64-bit)
Creative Xtreme Audio (PCIe)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Posted Image

Hi, had the same problem. Uninstalled game, then re-installed using the Windows 7 "Troubleshoot compatibility" setting on "setup.exe" and set to install as Vista SP2. Tested game would run, exited at first screen and installed all DLC's. Retested and all runs fine. Have not had any issues since. Hope this helps :-)

p.s. Make sure all graphics and sound card drivers are latest.

This is the same problem as far as I can see as has been mentioned in another thread about the game stopping working after clicking play on he launcher. I'm running on vista so not really sure how I could use that solution...

For Inso_Inferno:- Just an idea, use the compatibility setup settings as Win XP instead?

I have exactly the same problem and have tried to do what you said Solvitch, but it just dosnt seem to work for me... I have tried it a couple of times now with different types of Compatibility setup settings. Could it be that my graphic card is too small?

Hi Daegorn,

What's your Windows Experience Index? If less than 5.0 on all components, could cause probs! If Graphics 5.0 or above, should be an OK card. Have you latest drivers installed and what make is it?

I know this is getting to be my standard fix, but did you install the game with the "Run administrator" option?

Unistall the game. If you are running via disks, load the disks, but do not use the pop "install" screen you get. Navigate to the disk and right click the "setup.exe." and click "run as administrator". Once the game is install do the same for your DLC's.

You should install all of your games the same way. The D2D version should be installed the same way.

I installed and play the game with no issues running Win7 64.

Running in compatability modes doesn't fix the issue and my comp is definitely over all of the recommended specs for the game. Game just won't launch. I've tried the no movies stuff the compatability stuff the run as administrator. Nothing so far has stopped it crashing on launch.

Would really like a fix for this pretty soon as it's pretty poor to have a game out of the box just not work at all on an entirely compatible system. I uninstalled it and it deleted my mass effect 1 and saves because of pathetic programming. Man that was annoying. Thankfully I could recover with diskdigger but your average user won't know how to do this and people without or restricted internet are just screwed out of their money :/ Patchy please

I ran it in administrator mode after I re-installed the game for like the 5th time, and now I can launch it. I havent checked if it still crashes after set period of play time though, I kind of dont dare to try <.<

I beat ME2 on Thursday night had 16 saves, played briefly Saturday night and this mornign started getting the windows "Mass Effect 2 has stopped working" box. I have the Steam version and I run the game through the launcher or steam and it gives me this error right away. All drivers up to date nothing has changed hardware or software wise. Trying a reinstall right now.

caimbeul2000 I had the same problem you mentioned, and I posted this in another post, but I got mine fixed by doing the install with both DVDs in my optical drives. It appears that if the installing gets interrupted or has to ask for the second disk and it waits to long it corrupts the install. If you have two optical drives try putting the DVD into each drive.....

I have also read that some people have extracted the RAR files and copied the files into the correct locations..

I have been running ME2 fine over the weekend logging about 20 hours so far with no issues.

I just Re-UnZipped the english.rar and the dialog.rar manually into the MassEffect2 directory and that solved my problem.

While unzipping the dialog.rar it asked me to overwrite the files but while doing the english.rar it didn`t so I think a lot of the files just don`t get installed.

I had this problem as well. Do you have a 2 optical (DVD) drives? if so, does one of them have the dragon age origins disc in it? for some reason having the dragon age origin's disc in one of your optical drives while trying to install will completely mess up the installation.

a simple solution, if ME2 keeps crashing at the start up: uninstall the game, ensure that the ME2 discs (and only the ME2 discs) are in your optical drives and reinstall.
