http://www.penny-arc...omic/2008/8/11/ is require to be linked into these discussions.

On topic, i hardly noticed any foul language, only thing i can remember was Aria only rule. Frankly i'm surprised she didn't introduce herself as the queen **** of Omega. Many ****s by Joker, and as far as i remember only one ****, the kids playing on the yard use more expletives than that.

It's easier to implement than whole new dialogue, integrating newly designed items, etc. Especially considering there isn't cursing in most of the voice work. It's a rather small amount of cutscenes and lines that would need altering.

I only support a optional language filter if it beeps out the bad words instead of removing them, heavy swearing is part of some of the characters personalities.

I don't understand the logic behind this filter though, when you consider what else is in the game.

I give up. You're right, it's totally unreasonable, unfeasible, and unrealistic to add or request something as minor as few bleeps here and there. These horrible people should be hung and humiliated.

Also, why is there no nudity in ME2?! There is violence and swearing! There should be blue boobage too!

If you think I'm being serious, shoot yourself.

I am opposed to any kind of censorship of the language in the game. The writing in the game is so strong, I think it takes away from any work of "art" to arbitrarily cut bits out or try to hide them behind a bleep or whatever.

Compromising art in order to avoid offending people is never a good idea.

considering the amount of time it takes bioware (or is it a sub-studio?) to create, record and implement the voice acting it would take some time.

but there is not that much profanity in the game is there?

i agree on the hostility issue though, really isn´t necessary

It's a pretty sad state of affairs when someone posts a reasonable request and then receives a load of abuse and hositlity.

In the OP it specifically says : "leaving all moralistic judgements aside"  and yet immediately people feel the need to cast their judgement. The OP also makes no judgement either way on the issue, and respects the views of both those who like strong language and those who don't.

It was a simple request for Bioware to perhaps consider this as a possible feature - can't we show some courtesy?

Wow, lot of pretentious d**chebags in this thread.
There's something just unclassy about swearing.  I swear enough in real life, I have no problem with it.  However it just kinda takes away from a grande masterful game like Mass Effect.  Imagine a movie like LOTR, imagine Aragorn saying "F*CK YOU orc".

My point is:
It just doesn't fit in with the game.

And I imagine people want a filter not because it offends their delicate sensibilities, but probably because they have kids.  And before you blast off on some self-righteous rant about all the violence, the kids aren't on your lap staring at the screen.  They're playing on the other side of the room, they're running around, etc.  Audio carries, but the quick visuals don't get seen.

...It does fit with the game.  How does it NOT fit on Omega?

I don't know, I don't have the energy to try and write out my thoughts.  ME is just a masterpiece type thing.  It's... above swearing in a way.

Considering i support the language filter, I find it somewhat insulting that my enjoyment of the way swearing is implemented in the darker sequal makes it "below" a masterpiece.

That's pretty self-righteous if you ask me.

Above swearing? Good god, you're a prude.
What about nudity? is that above masterpiece type things? Or just the few words you find naughty? Or the blood, or the killing of species. The racism? All these below masterpiece things too? or that just F*** and words like that? Language filter fine, It's not hard code, a little costly on space, but hell, two discs, make it three I don't care. But really, if you think using natural language in it's natural context is "Below" a masterpiece, then you have no idea what a masterpiece is. Masterpieces are not pure and innocent, get over it.

Oh wow I'm sorry, I didn't realise by holding an opinion that I had insulted you so intensely.

Listen carefully retread.  I'm not offended by it, I just don't think it fits in the game.  I just think there are better ways to convey the characters than reverting to swearing.

Did I say I thought ME was pure or innocent? Did I say that I think Masterpieces are pure or innocent?
No dingus, I just said that I don't think swearing fits into the game.

Violence and racism and genocide are huge problems. they are massive things humanity deals with.  Swearing is considered "crass" or "low class", and is so not even close to being on the same level it's not funny.  And if you can't see that, then it's evident that you're just simply not understanding me.

You totally missing the point, the swearing if for realism, People swear and so what if swearing is crass and low class? Jack doesn't go around acting as if she isn't crass or low class. Neither does anyone on omega, if they're talking any diffrent it would pull you right out of the game. And the way they used it was very well warrented and neither did it come up alot.

And also, yes you did insult me. Because your thinking is "Words are bad don't use them" instead of looking at context and why they're said. You're blanket response is "Word bad" instead of knowing the meaning and reason for word to be used. Joker with his cursing tirade going through a ship is NATURAL. and frankly I'll take natural over "better ways to convey the character". Cause it's natural for him to go "S***" over and over again instead of "Crap".
Note: Swearing to swear is entirely different than protraying natural human behavor. Human's swear. So I'm sorry if it's prudish, or "Low class" to swear, but they do. Get over yourself.

Oh, and you didn't address Nudity, so love to hear your thought on that. Since that is also "low class". (know their is no nudity in ME)
And sorry for thinking you wanted pure and innocent, my mistake, thanks for calling me a dingus for having my opinion, seems we all must resort to the lowest common denomentor in the room (me). No reason for that upper road or anything, so hard going up that slope.

Harsh language seems to add grit and can be used to great effect if used sparingly.

though as long as we get an uncensored version I support a language filter

Two things:

1) I can see that point.  However the way Jack's voice actor delivers it, she -way- overpronounces the ffFFF*CK.  Like we're being spoonfed the "oh wow, she's so hardcore, she said the word F*CK!!!".  To me it just stands out as something the writers threw in to convey tone without having to resort to boring old "convincing diologue".

2) How do you feel about being traded to the Leafs?

Wait. You're blaming the writers for the voice actor's pronoucation of the word?
Holy hell. That's the voice actor's fault, or the director. That has nothing to do with the writer. Writer's do not control that much of the process once it leaves their desk.

Personally, I like the rare moments when characters swear. It doesn't feel Deadwood-ish overdone. And I don't understand why swearing and nudity is bad when violence is everywhere.

Having said that, it doesn't seem difficult to add a few dozen beeps and cut out nude scenes for the people who are sensitive to that kind of thing. And it seems like there are enough of them to matter.

I could deal with a lot more more swearing and more nudity, simply because I'd imagine a bad*** space marine who kills enemies by the dozen and goes on suicide missions being quite vulgar and really enjoying casual encounters with the opposite sex.  Image IPB

You mean when someone is going on a suicide mission?
