You totally missing the point, the swearing if for realism, People swear and so what if swearing is crass and low class? Jack doesn't go around acting as if she isn't crass or low class. Neither does anyone on omega, if they're talking any diffrent it would pull you right out of the game. And the way they used it was very well warrented and neither did it come up alot.

Two things:

1) I can see that point.  However the way Jack's voice actor delivers it, she -way- overpronounces the ffFFF*CK.  Like we're being spoonfed the "oh wow, she's so hardcore, she said the word F*CK!!!".  To me it just stands out as something the writers threw in to convey tone without having to resort to boring old "convincing diologue".

2) How do you feel about being traded to the Leafs?

Because thats her character ,if they went in a round about way it would have been out of character. Her whole thing is she is trying to sound like a bad ass. Even though she really isn't one, it's her front.

But like I said before, a filter of some type seems quite feasible, given how many people it would satisfy with (seemingly) not much effort. Add some beeps and delete some scenes.

The flipside of this is that I could end up with more profanity and more nudity, too, so everyone would be happy :)

LOL, that doesnt surprise me at all.

Teen agers usually do think swearing makes them cool

I could deal with a lot more more swearing and more nudity, simply because I'd imagine a bad*** space marine who kills enemies by the dozen and goes on suicide missions being quite vulgar and really enjoying casual encounters with the opposite sex.  Image IPB

Or same sex, if said marine is into that kind of thing

Certainly.  I have no problem with that, I just don't think along those lines by habit Image IPB

Nothing wrong with a filter. It's not that hard, certainly not as hard as what some people advocate for ME3. Hell make it an update and they can probably do it for ME2.
I think now my problem is with the swearing shouldn't be there crowd.

While I support the adult nature of everything in the game, I see absolutely no reason to be so hostile to someone wanting a filter for the language. That sort of thing is pretty easy to implement.

not really you have to code it for every cut scene that has it, then you have to code it for every subtitle in every language.  then code it to work on the options menu.  it could take a day out of work that can be better used for some thing else.

That's really not that much production time. It's a reasonable request. The hostility is unnecessary.

Agreed. Bioware should really  give people a choice in regards to outright cussing.

And, I don't think the whole "we allow killing but swearing is a no-no argument stands" younger kids while playing
understand that the game is not real but they pick up swear words really easily and whilst they might pick it up elsewhere parents should be allowed the choice to not expose their children to even more profanity.

So, a screaming woman being dragged into an elevator by her hair is ok.. but the non gratuitous use of F*** is disturbing?

Look, I just don't think swearing fits in a game like Mass Effect. I don't really give a sh*t if you agree or not.

No I'm not insulted by it, no I'm not offended by it, I just don't think it fits. If you think swearing is the magical ingredient to being "gritty" or "dark", they you have a lot to learn.

Hurr hurr I swore in my argument against swearing in ME.

If you don't like swearing, don't buy the damn game. It's written on the back of the case, or are your feelings hurt? :(

cause we kept accusing you of not being able to swear. well I wasn't at least.
We're accusing you of something else. Well I am.
See, the point is, a game like Mass Effect means what? "Masterpiece".
P.S. Still like your thoughts on nudity.

You're dealing with the worst people in the universe, criminals and thugs half the time - it would be unrealistic if they didn't swear at all.

lol
you're entitled to think like that, of course, but I couldn't disagree more.  It's not the "magical ingredient" and it's over the top if it's as frequent as in Deadwood, but some swearing definitely adds some flavor, especially if a renegade does it at "improper" times.

Either way, like I said, some like it and some don't, and it seems easy enough to add a "switch" that makes everyone happy.

This seems to be veering wildly off-topic. The OP was specifically NOT to cast judgement as to whether people should/should not find swearing offensive or the rights/wrongs of censorship. It was merely to ask Bioware to consider the possibility of a language filter.

There are numerous reasons why a language filter would be much appreciated by a lot of people.

EchoTango made an intelligent comment :-
"And I imagine people want a filter not because it offends their
delicate sensibilities, but probably because they have kids.  And
before you blast off on some self-righteous rant about all the
violence, the kids aren't on your lap staring at the screen.  They're
playing on the other side of the room, they're running around, etc.
Audio carries, but the quick visuals don't get seen."

For those who like to hear swearing : why is the request for a language filter a problem if you still have the option to play it "uncensored'? This option would simply enable many other gamers to enjoy this phenomenal game without the profanity.

Some have said that it would be too much work for Bioware to implement. In reality, applying a RegEx expression to the subtitles to remove/mask profanity and providing a 'beeped' version of the necessary audio files is not actually a great deal of work. Really though, that's a question for Bioware to consider rather than the community 2nd guessing what's involved - hence the original request.

If you don't want your children listening to profanity while you're playing this game, a profanity filter already exists and it's called... headphones!

If, on the other hand, you are the one who is too sensitive then you have the option of not purchasing any game that is labeled 'mature'.

Problem solved!

Haha what is everyone's problem with my point of view?

I just don't think the swearing fits. Get over it.

I think the way they handled the nudity is ok I guess. But if Jack plopped a t*ttie out and said "hey Shepard, look at my BREAST" I would view it the same way I view the forced swearing in ME2.

it might take some time, but with a multimillion dollar budget and a huge audience, if I were making the decisions, I'd put one in just so I didn't have to hear about it.

It's a pretty sad state of affairs when someone posts a reasonable request and then receives a load of abuse and hositlity.

In the OP it specifically says : "leaving all moralistic judgements aside"  and yet immediately people feel the need to cast their judgement. The OP also makes no judgement either way on the issue, and respects the views of both those who like strong language and those who don't.

It was a simple request for Bioware to perhaps consider this as a possible feature - can't we show some courtesy?

People are "abusive and hostile" when they point out how ridiculous the request is? If he didn't want peoples opinions on this, then he shouldn't have posted it on a public forum. It was a simple request to remove common place swear words from a 15+ or M rated game, as has been stated, if you're not mature enough to hear swear words, don't buy the game. When you say courtesy, you mean "Don't reply to his post with an opinion of your own." This is how stupid political correctness gets. He's entitled to his opinion, but it doesn't mean it isn't a ridiculous one.

Good idea I guess, but opposing profanity is so prudish and archaic.

:bandit:

This.

If offensive language, directed between pixels offends you then you should heed the "15" age limit. In fairness the "F" word has lost most of its impact these days as swearing is so commonplace. I havn't really noticed it in ME so far. I'd prefer they swore "naturally" rather than how some people must assume they should.

"Shephard we're under attack!"
"Good gravy, are you sure old chap?"
"Yes, yes! the ship is shaking can't you feel that!?"
"By george, I think the old chap is right."

I mean there's a limit to how silly people should get with not liking swearing. Knowing when to use it in real life is the key. Whining about it in a game, is ridiculous.

This was the most hilarious and truthful post on this thread.

Disagreeing with profanity in it's entirety is just the stupidest thing I  have ever heard.

In all seriousness, don't you think if humanity and the rest of the universe is in a position where they are on the verge of extinction, they wouldn't swear?

And it makes since for Jack to swear and be troubled because of her childhood / past.

A language filter might not be a bad idea, but either way you are overreacting.
