My first playthrough everything worked fine with getting Shale and interacting with the character. I'm now playing through a second time and went to get Shale a lot earlier for the amusing dialogue. However, when I click to talk on Shale my screen mostly blanks out and I get a very old option to use the control rod words on the golem or leave the golem. If I select doing nothing then I resume my game in a room close by where I was, but not exactly where I tried to talk to Shale.
It's not game-breaking, but I'd like to be able to talk to Shale!

At some point earlier you were likely hit with the Disappearing/Missing DLC glitch. See the DLC In-Game Errors FAQ for more details and how to get your game and Shale back in a good state.
