Okay I am royally confused here, all I am trying to do is allow vanguards to use assualt rifles, I have all the right stuff downloaded, the ruby script is in the right folder, I think I am doing everything I am supposed to and I still cant get it to work.

Here is what I do.
1. Open notepad++
2. Open the coalesced file
3. edit the info
4. Save the file under a different name--this is a part that confuses me
5. Run the Ruby script...a command prompt hops on the screen for about half a second, then I delete the old Coalesced, and rename the file under a different name to Coalesced.ini and then run ME2, where it then crashes.

Any Idea what I am doing wrong?

Don't rename file after notepad++ editing and saving.

Maybe this will help:
1. Open notepad++
2. Open the coalesced file
3. edit the info
4. Save the file as coalesced.ini
5. Run the Ruby script - will become "fixed_coalesced.ini"
6. Rename "fixed_coalesced.ini" to coalesced.ini  and delete original ini file

Trying this...but by saying "delete the original that infers that there should be two ini files, however whenever I save my edits I save over the original.

Thats the right way.
Then run Ruby
Will get a "fixed_coalesced.ini"
Now delete original "coalesced.ini"
Rename  "fixed_coalesced.ini" to "coalesced.ini"
and then run ME2.

okay so my issue is know getting ruby to work. So far I have tried running the script by having it opened via ruby, causing a command prompt to appear and reappear.

and I have actually opened ruby, leading to a command prompt that I have no idea how to use lol.

right so i have managed to screen shot the half second ruby prompt that pops up when I simply click the script
it says "Fixing section data at 0x35106...." "Writing fixed file to fix coalesced .ini"
keep in mind no second file pops up

in order for ruby to make 2 coalesced files you need to have the coalescedrealCRC script in the same folder as the original coalesced file

I use the ini fixer. Much easier to use than Ruby.

:oUnfreaking believable.....Yep its working. That file is much better....Thanks everyone, yall spared me about another hour of me grunting and yelling at my computer...

Thanks again all....and here is the fruit of my labor, Mar's idiot proof guide to giving a weapon loadout to a class.

1. Download Notepad++, linked in the OP
2. Open Notepad++, if you are running vista, make sure you run it as an admin.
3. When in notepad++ open the coalesced.ini file located at
C:\\Program Files\\Mass Effect 2\\BioGame\\Config\\PC\\Cooked
4. Use ctrl+f to find className=SFXPawn_Player
5. Find your class, in my case vanguard
6. Look at the other classes, select your loadout, in my case assualt rifles, and add a comma ,  to the end of that line then with no spaces add LoadoutWeapons_AssaultRifles   insure there are no spaces.
7. Save the file
8. Download the ini fixer located at http://social.biowar...06/index/869923
9. Download it, and place in the same folder as the coalesced file.
10. Run it, again making sure you run it as an admin.
11. Do not move or change anything else, unless you want to edit the coalesced file again.

that concludes the Emperors labors in this matter.

Or if all you're doing is editing the ini, use Iron Spine's editor. Much simpler.

That ini editors gui is a mess really though, it's less user friendly than the actual ini file lol. I see the syntax as being easier to be honest, and with notepad++'s find/replace features ini editing is a piece of cake.

That's right, the new SMG. Turns out you're able to mod it just like the collector and incisor rifles, but with the entitlements hack. It's awesome when it does a bit more damage, it's definitely my favorite SMG:)

You can do that easily with gibbed's save editor.

Tried my hand at some basic things today, but I'm hit an issue that I cannot explain. I think it's a problem on my pc, but I'm just posting to see if anyone else has this issue:

Notepad++ and the Coalesced compiler will not function because both have errors while saving saying the file is in use elsewhere. I have no other programs open apart from whatever I am trying to use, so I cannot figure it out. Is it just some technical oddity, and should I give up all hope of ever managing to mod something?

If you installed the game to your Program Files folder you will need to modify your folder security permissions before being able to edit Coalesced.ini without issue, if you didn't install to Program Files you should have no issues at all.

This has also been known to effect those modifying DLC content as well, so make sure you do it.

To do this navigate into your 'Program Files' folder so that you can see your 'Mass Effect 2' folder, Right-Click on it and select 'Properties'. On the 'Security' tab you will need to click the button marked 'Edit' so that you may change permissions. Highlight 'Users' and check the box for 'Allow' next to 'Full Control' and click 'Ok'.

You should be fine from there.

Indeed I am, it's working fine now. Thank you very much. :) At times like this I think I should leave these things to the technically competent.

PS: I still could do with some people copying the content of certain sections of this thread (9 pages a chunk) across to the forums linked in my signature, we have a lot there already but I'm missing 5 main segments, 31-40, 41-50, 51-60, 61-70, 71-80.

Please if someone could elect to take one of those chunks and just copy the threads in those pages over to the me2 mods forums, that would be great, we can then collate the information and get it on there in searchable and usable information and tutorials.

Thanks!
