ME 3: No Alliance, No Cerberus, where do we go from here?

Depending how you played your cards, at the end of ME 2 you are still technically a spectre and you and your crew have severed ties from Cerberus.

I can't see everyone Shep recruited for this mission staying on for long afterwards. Jacob, Miranda, Tali, Garrus, I can see for sure sticking around.

Jack will probably take off, or maybe stay as she has nowhere else to go.

Grunt will probably be needed back home.

Samara will probably return to hunting down injustices.

Legion may stick around as some sort of Geth ambassador but he could head home too.

Zaed is a merc, he will be off for the next paycheck.

Mordin could stay or go, not really sure.

Thane will probably be dead.

Now that ties to Cerberus are severed, Shepard could technically get funding from the council as a spectre I suppose, but does anybody really want to serve under those clowns again? They won't see the threat until it arrives at the Citadel. Again.

Shepard could go back to the Alliance, but they don't seem to be much better as far as recognizing the true threat, other than Anderson.

Keeping a ship the size of the Normandy supplied as well as maintaining the crew, even assuming they are simply their out of loyalty and need no compensation other than food and a rack to sleep in, costs credits.

So where does Shepard go? Is there a third option? Can Shepard create an organization of his own, a kinder, gentler more humane Cerberus? Or does he go back to the alliance or council?

The only other option is the time between ME 2 and ME 3 being one long Burn Notice episode where Shepard is helping those that need it for credits, lol

What do you all think?

I think based on decisions at the end of ME2 you will either return to the Alliance & Citadel Council or remain with Cerebus. Your not going to be all alone when the Reapers attack.

The credit issue is the most fascinating. I hope we have to very early in ME3 do something awesome to get funding. I'm hoping we rip Cerberus off for billions!

It would be pretty sweet to pull a massive bank job on TIM. Talk about a slap in the face.

I agree. I would love to see this fleshed out, not just automatically go back to the council. Given their stupidity in ME 2 after all that happened in ME 1 it seems like a poor choice.

Between the cat of the first two games Shepard should have enough people to pull from to easily put together a team. Maybe instead of team building it should be about putting together an organization that can fund the fight against the reapers.

other things to take into consideration, and these are all based on choices from me1 and 2. if you saved the rachni queen on noveria in the first one, there's another pool of allies to count on. if you did, the asari agent on illium already says that the rachni are greatful for what you did, and that they will fight besides shepard when the time comes. second, if wrex lived on virmire. an army of united krogan clans will be something to watch out for. and in me2 we have tali/legion starting to get past their differences. upon conversing with legion, you find out the geth understand why the quarians did what they did and they harbor no ill will towards them. even to the point that they are caretakers of the quarian homeworld, and that they dont live on the planet.

I want to join clan Urdont. Wrex and I will be best buddies, gunning down Reapers back to back while Garrus snipes from far away and Grunt is just doing his solo thing.

I want to be autonomous, able to make decisions without the involvement of an outside entity.

Autonymous or working for the council again I bet. Or maybe working for Ceberus again, I'm not sure.

I really want to serve under the council again, though. There's just no end to the amusement.

Let's assume that Bioware can only blow up the Normandy and kill and resurrect Shepherd once in the trilogy to get existing characters to move on.

It's worth pointing out that Mordin is old by Salarian standards. I don't think he or Thane will be playable in the next game; probably not dead (if they survived the mission), but quite possibly too old or infirm to be in fighting shape.

Tali is an interesting case. If she's exiled, she might stay with you. If not, well, there IS a spot on the Admiralty Board...

I really hope ME3 is a combination of the ME1 and 2 teams, with a smattering of new characters to make sure you have your essentials covered. You should know most of the major players by the third act of the trilogy.

I do see ME3 as shaping up to be a DAO-style gather-an-army-to-fight-the-Reapers. In ME2 you have several decisions which can impact the power of different factions. And it seems like Shepherd is emerging as a force in of himself--he might well have his own organization or affiliation by ME3.

Shepard and Tali rule from the Golden Throne on Earth as God Emperor and Empress of the Universe.

Well I did most of what the OP said, except I told the Council to shove the spectre reinstatement up their ass so I doubt I'll be working for them any time again. I'll work with Cerberus if I have to but once the big bad ugly reaper threat is defeated they'll be on my "solid excrement" list again.

The alliance is probably the most sensible of the three but with them there is miles of red tape and no way does my Shepard want to go back to that.

So striking it out alone? Like a privateer or corsair or vigilante or, hell, a space batman? That one sounds the most appealing right now. Funding will definitely be a problem but hopefully I can use my former spectre status to get some private backers, either that or just keep things alive with endorsements.

Spectre is the most likely choice for a Paragon Shepard.

The great thing about ME3 is that because no game leads on from it Bioware can write massive divergence into the story. Who the main players are, what you do, how you defeat the reapers, who rules in the aftermath, all these things can be written as widely differing between players because we have no ME4 to export saves too (a blessing and a curse)

Another option just occurred to me - Liara.

She's building up quite the financial empire and is taking on the Shadow Broker.

She might just be the person to fund Shepard and/or help create an organization to help back him.

re: nothing past ME 3 ... I thought I read somewhere that they are considering extending the franchise after ME 3. Bioware being part of EA, and EA loving their franchise games, it makes sense. Possibly move on to another 3 game arc. Great characters, great universe. As long as they can come up with good stories, why not?

I can see that especially given that she is probably, of all characters, the one with the most faith and trust in Shepard and his/her judgment.

I think it's obvious who will be involved in ME3 - the Shadow Broker. They've been building up to it for two games now, and I think he or she will play a MAJOR role in the third game.

Maybe when Liara takes down the Shadow Broker you can take the remains of his empire to build your own against the Reapers.

I don't know how it would work but the idea of acting as an autonomous entity is appealing.

I think that the game will actually involve Shepard working for all of them, or at least working to get them all fighting on the same side. I strongly suspect that the general structure of ME3 will be like DA:O - it'll be about gathering allies to prepare for an invasion.

The setup is already there. Quarians and Geth need to work out their problems. Rachni (if they live) could help. Wrex needs to unite the Krogan. Cerberus could be useful, as could the Alliance, the Council (and the Spectres). Maybe even the forces of the Terminus systems, like the Batarian Hegemony. Mark my words, ME3 will involve Shepard playing diplomat (while kicking ass obviously).

I hope the Normandy SR-2 returns, and the Illusive Man has let Shepard keep it. I think EDI is the best new character in ME2.

Its all going to come down to one thing and one thing only. Kicking some serious Reaper booty, or if you remember what they said back in Mass Effect 1. Your decisions will either save the galaxy or Doom it. Which means we could watch shepard and all of organic life get destroyed by the reapers. Attention, Attention, all organic life. Start preying and kiss your butts goodbye. The reapers won. Muahaahaa!
