The thing I like about Ash is that if her role were played by a male character, xenophobic Marine, bit religious, happy to kill pretty much anything without too much thought, she'd be considered pretty much a cliche. As she is she's basically no more and no less really than one ought to expect from an enlisted soldier, but she's a woman, and she's quite well spoken too, so people tend to miss those faults.
Compared to Miranda, who is a Frankensteined super operative, Ash is salt of the earth. A jarhead and a fighter. She's not so smart to be free of superstitions and she's not educated or cultured enough to be open minded about aliens. She doesn't swear like a trooper perhaps ought to, but she's solid. I'd find her more convincing if she was rougher around the edges, but either way they are not especially similar characters.
The reason Ash drops you like a hot potato in ME2 is because, as mentioned above, she's not one for nuance, half-measures or tact. She's a soldier, she was your soldier, then you left and she's back to her family, the military. Miranda might leave Cerberus for you but I get the impression that wild horses wouldn't be able to drag Ash out of the Alliance military. For you to abandon it, for her, is a great betrayal, perhaps even greater than any personal betrayal.
All in all I actually like Ash more than Miranda because ultimately Ash is a pitbull. Ashley is Wrex without the biotics. A no-nonsense dealer of death who doesn't pretend to understand the universe, just stomps on the bits of it you ask her too. Miranda is not nearly so solid. I wouldn't trust her as far as I could through her, even taking into account how far she'd bounce on that ass.
