So, not sure if that made sense, but what I mean is: If you're skipping dialogue with the x button (you don't care or you've already seen it several times before), when you get to the line that lets the dialogue wheel come up part way through (so you can choose your response before your turn and avoid a gap in the conversation), you automatically enter the default option on the wheel. I don't know if this is a bug or a dubious design choice, but I was wondering if anyone else had this issue and wanted it changed.

It should be changed, but Bioware was lazy or made a poor design choice. If you are going thru 6+ times in a game you want to skip text and then get straight to the choice part.

Happened since Mass Effect 1. It's a design oversight, I'd say. Very annoying when you're replaying a long chat and accidentally select the wrong thing and have to reload...

Indeed. I hope an eventual patch addresses this as it was just as annoying when Mass Effect was released.

It's funny because the Dragon Age: Origins team at Bioware designed their game to avoid this issue. You can hit 'X' in Dragon Age to skip to the choice, but only 'A' will select the choice, not 'X'.

I don't have anything to add but I wanted to agree that it needs to be fixed.

I agree, this has been a problem since ME1.  Simply making X *not* pick a dialog choice would be the best solution.

That's why I hold the left stick in a direction I know will not have a choice available, like straight up. that way I don't accidentally press the wrong choice while skipping dialogue. It's worked perfectly for me since ME1.

Hardly works perfectly on A) your first play through and B) when there's 6 options and two of them being Paragon or Renegade which often only selectable once.

Solution, hold straight left. Almost always only is investigate. I belive a few aren't though (like during one of Liara's quests).

A related issue to this is their insane subtitle timing. Whenever there is a dramatic pause, the subtitle for the next line comes up right after the first, sometimes as much as 15+ seconds early. Kinda ruins the whole "pause for dramatic affect."

Here's to hoping they patch it.

hold up since no options appear there.

or you could do what i did on ME1 and remember where the options are that you want to select during that conversation

What? For starters, who skips dialogue on their first playthrough? Not withstanding that I don't see how playthroughs affect the ability of holding left stick up while skipping said dialogue...

And to your B; Last I saw there were no options in the direction of straight up, which is where I said to hold the stick.... I'm not seeing were my way doesn't work exactly as I described, unless you don't have a left thumb. But if that's the case you probably won't be playing this anyways...

So what part of that doesn't work perfectly exactly?

I find this very annoying as well. The game even recommends for you to skip through the dialog if you have already played through the game. Because of this oversight I have to save before just about every conversation. Some of the lines are so short that when I press the skip button I ending up selecting a response on accident.

If you're skipping the dialog just hold it straight up as laterali said. There's a space between the paragon and the option about the option to leave the conversation, aka the 'I gotta go", so you're not going to end up selecting anything you don't want to. And If there's not going to be a text patch because of the size limit, there's no way that there will be a patch for a UI change. Not trying to be mean or rude but those are the facts.

Thank you for the suggestion to press the stick straight up to avoid skipping. But, yes, PLEASE Bioware just remove that mechanic for ME 3. Amazing game, btw ^_^

This needs a patch on PC, too, because using the spacebar there does the same thing...

After a little digging in coalesced.ini on my PC, I found these two seperate bindings:
Bindings=( Name="SpaceBar",Command="PC_ConvSkip")
Bindings=( Name="PC_ConvSkip", Command="SkipConversation" )
Even after changing the key, to for example ESC, This new key will also select a dialog-choice. So even if Spacebar=PC_ConvSkip=SkipConversation, that final command does more than it's name suggests.
I haven't been able to locate SkipConversation anywhere else that that binding. I'm guessing it would require digging in some compressed/encoded/encrypted/compiled gamecode.B)

I'm throwing in my hat for the 'poor UI choice' team. So many unwanted responses issued! However, I'll give holding LS up a go :)

I really expected this to be changed.

Generally, I just hold in the direction of my morality, but that's not always perfect.

When I played through I held the option wheel straight down when I hit X.  Would have it better if it didn't choose dialogue, but it helps missing dialogue when you pull the stick down.

This was my first complaint for Mass Effect 2. Skipping through conversations with X, but when the wheel is about to pop-up, the X selects an option.

Although, I came to the same workaround conclusion of holding the stick toward an area I remember won't do anything.

As far as fixing in a patch, this one should be extremely easy.

But if they don't fix this design oversight in a patch, hopefully they will accept it as a suggestion for ME3.
