Ok I'm sure there's been lots of "Why did ____ die in my playthrough?" topics out there. But still.
While playing the game, I attained every character and made them all loyal. I got most of the uprgades they wanted, including Garrus'. When it came to the final mission, Garrus was the specialist from the start, with Jacob as Fire team.
They said they needed someone techy, so I went for Garrus because he has decent enough tech skills (right?). Plus I didn't quite trust Legion yet and didn't wanna send Tali in. He ended up saying the door won't close, and dispite Me and Garrus closing the doors together, he got shot right in the chops and died xD Even though I opened all 8 cooling vents for him.
I don't get it though. Did it need a more "Techy" character like Tali or Legion?
Also, Mordin randomly died when I left the rest of the group to defend the door. He had the upgrade he asked for and was Loyal.
Kinda sucks cause they were my 2 favourite characters. Ah well. Anyone know why they might have died? I wanna correct my mistakes for the next playthough.

Ummm, use Legion or Tali for the specialist part. They are the real tech guys in the team.

And Mordin did die randomly for me as well. So next time i am sending him back with the crew that i saved. Hopefully he wont die then at least.

Techy in terms of IN REAL LIFE being techy, not their "ability" being techy.

Listen to your team member's advice, like Miranda offers to lead the fire team, samara offers to hold the biotic field...etc...

Actually, you're thinking of Mass Effect 1 Garrus. In Mass Effect 2, the party members really don't have a class and Garrus is more of a sniper and good as a leader of a fire team.  Sure he has some tech skills but he's more soldier than tech I think.

I also think it's a matter of how fast you open the pipe blockages to enable the techie to move through. It is said that there is quite a bit of heat in there in the beginning if I recall so it probably exhausts the techie to be slower if you take too long or something I guess.

For the love of the Maker don't make Miranda or Jacob do the biotic field... just don't do it.

Fair enough. How hard can closing a door be, really? xD Samara managed to open one fine.

Really? I sent Zaeed back and they were fine. Would the scientist of the team even make it back?

You have to send either Tali or Legion through the vents.

Mordin's death at the end is a hotly debated topic. :D There are a lot of theories about what causes him to die when he is loyal and all the correct decisions have been made, but the only sure-fire ways to prevent it are to have him escort the crew or bring him on your squad for the final mission.

Yeah it's a crap shoot I guess, I left him at the door and had Zaeed escort the crew back and Mordin lived for me.

Likewise... I used Grunt to escort the crew, never assigned Mordin to anything, and he lived.

But apparently his death at the door is a really common outcome, and so far I haven't seen any rock-solid evidence that explains it.  It may just be random.

Haha, what happens if you have Thane, Miranda or Jacob make the biotic field? How badly do they fail?

It's less than ideal, not a very good choice at all.  I think you lose people...

They don't have the juice to do the biotic explosion at the end, and someone dies.

I vote for glitch. Maybe a bug Bioware forgot to iron out.

You want the Right man/woman for the Right job, and you'd want someone else (someone with GREAT Biotic Power!) than these for Optimal Results, but then again it is you who shape your destiny! :D

Agreed. When I leave Mordin at the door he always dies. If I have him escort, he lives with no casualties. very interesting.

There are many factors that may cause people to die and not all of them obvious like Loyalty and ship upgrades. Choices matter and probably maybe how long it takes to complete certain sections? I think there is just data we lack to fully predict who will live and die consistently.

Maybe it's based upon how badass the people you leave guarding the door are. I took the two I deemed least appropriate for a sustained firefight (Tali and Mordin) with me to fight the boss, because I wanted everyone left fighting to be able to deal with it.

I think whether Mordin dies is probably a result of the combination of squadmembers you leave him with.

I had Zaeed escort and took Tali and Miranda with me to the final fight, and everyone lived so maybe that is true.

On my first play through I sent Garrus through the vent and he died on the second play through on a different character I sent Legion through and he died, so I think whoever you send through the vent ends up dieing. I also think the second team leader dies everytime, cause I had Zaeed as the second team leader for the second time the teams split up and he died on both play throughs.

I had Thane do the techie part and he caught the missile to the face. Zaeed led my 2nd fire time and died with a bullet in the gut and Mordain ate it while holding the door, which I can only assume happens if you lose someone before that point. I had everyone loyal and all the upgrades as well. Kinda confused me at first but reading these forums answered a lot of my questions.

Though you would think Zaeed would be able to lead the 2nd fire team after all the merc training and stuff.

Nope you can have the vent person live, you may have took too long getting there or your fire team leader was not a good choice.

Zaeed is not a good team leader, you made sub optimal choices.

Zaeed is a solo guy, he gets the job done and does not care if others die.  He is a  survivor but not a leader.

Common sense should tell you they wouldn't put an Achievement in the game that is impossible to achieve...

Miranda and Jacob aren't ideal because they are Humans. Humans, even the best ones, are still weak compared to the rest of the races. Not sure if Jack works since she is a freak of nature. LOL

Thane, like Garrus, is more Combat oriented than Biotic. (Tech in Garrus' case.)

It can be done quite easily if you prepare properly and make the right choices.
