I was frustrated by the excessively long load times in between areas, especially the different floors of the Normandy.  I have a decent, optimized rig and was curious to see if there was a way to fix this.  I can't claim ownership of this FIX but it definitly worked for me.  First thing I should say is that it is for DUAL CORE processor systems.
  • Defrage your hard drive (of course)
  • Start the game
  • At main screen, ALT+TAB back to the desktop
  • CTL+ALT+DEL to get to the task bar
  • Click on the "Processes" tab
  • Find the Mass Effect EXE process (should be the one using the most memory)
  • Right click on it and choose "Set Affinity"
  • Untick your second processor  (will be "processor 1")
  • Click OK
  • Repeat steps 6 through 7
  • Enable both processors
  • ALT+TAB back into the game
Your loading screens should be significantly reduced.  In fact, most of the Normandy levels load immediately for me after this "fix".  I would only assume that there is an issue with how the game handles load balancing across the two logical processors and this little trick "resets" it.

I am running Windows 7 x64, with a Core2Duo processor.  Hope this helps some folks!

my "fix" involves opening and closing the game until it loads up faster. for me, i found that if the opening menu page does not instantly come up after the EA logo disappears, the game will have ridiculously long load times. if it pops up instantly, load times are reasonable.

Awesome, worked perfect in win 7 x64 with C2D CPU. Would take like 1 or 2 mins to move between floors in the Normandy. I dual boot to win xp x64 and, interestingly, load times are fine with XP...

Worked for me as well. ran into other issues later with high resolution above 1024x768 and the game freezing, not sure if this aided in that issue, but every time I tried to get to a distance close enough to shoot the huge Human Reaper the game reported an error and crashed, lowering res under 1024 allowed game to continue

Could someone please tell me how to do this?? When I try to follow the steps mentioned in the first post an error message saying the operation couldn't be completed access is denied. Using win 7x64 home premium if that helps.

You need admin privileges to do this, it's possible your user account is the limited one.

I found out that when you start the game and it takes longer then 10 sec for the first screen to appear (works best when disabling those 2 intro videos) , the loading time will be long.

Restart the game till the screen comes up very quickly then it's working.

there seems to a be a glitch in regards to detecting dual core when running the EXE.

Presumably you need to do this every time you run the game, right?

It seems the other way round for me. When I ran the game as a admin it would give me the access denied error. Run the game as a normal user and it allows me to change the affinity. No idea why but that solved the issue.

Worked for me! Vista x64 with a Core 2 Duo. Instead of minutes, loading times have been reduced to seconds. Cheers!

Excellent, the one thing that annoyed me the most in ME2 is the loading between the Normandy floors which sometimes took up more than 1 minute
The solution works for me as well, reducing loading times of 45-60 sec to merely seconds!

Thank u very much!

Hopefully they'll fix that bug soon. I guess most of us players have dual core cpu's.

Even if they fix this I will still only play on one core. My processor's fan is much more quiet that way and I don't notice a decrease in performance.

It has less to do with your system's horsepower and more to do with how the game handles dual core processors.  My system is mid-high end and runs the game with all bells and whistles at 60fps.

Or you could use Mass Affinity, which does all those steps (not the defrag, of course) automatically.

Some enterprising person with some time on their hands automated the process.  For me, though, I would rather change system settings myself instead of installing a script to do it.  Just old fashioned that way, I guess.

Thanks nutshell for that link. It is so annoying to change the affinity every time you want to play the game. This should be stickied...
