Let me explain the question. It has come up again recently with my obsession with Dragon Age: Origins, but it applies to gaming in general.
Do you constantly have to defend yourself from friends and/or family about your gaming hobby?
Do you have friends/family who are not gamers that do not understand?
I ask because my wife is not a gamer, and she doesn't quite get it, my parents also never really understood. Most of my friends are non-gamers as well and they don't get it either. I constantly have to defend gaming as a valid hobby. I ask them how is it differnt than when they spend hours reading books, or playing Golf, or watching TV?
Anyone else have this problem? I thought it was a good question, not sure if it has been discussed before.
Are you a Gamer on the Defensive?

Eh. I don't really bother defending it when it comes up. I'll just ask them how much their hobby costs and go my merry way, cursing that mine costs so much more. Also, some people consider reading books a hobby? *boggle* It's an entertainment choice, not a hobby.

This is rather more suited for Off Topic, but no, I have no reason to be on the defensive.

Whenever my girlfriend tells me I'm a geek, I just remind her that she's watching a show about interior decorating and used to be first chair in the band.

Yes, if I ever look at games at work, my collegues look at me like I'm deranged, lucky my family are avid gamers so no worries there, they do occasionally tell me off when I sit at the PC for in excess of 12hrs though

You're probably right JEBesh, I didn't notice an Off-Topic forum on the Social site..sorry about that if I was wrong.
(Edit: I see the Off Topic now...was that there from the start? I never noticed it..sorry about that, ops may move if you like)
Still I was relating it to Dragon Age: Origins, as this is the game that specifically sparked this thought in my mind again.

Hobby/entertainment, whatever you wish to call it =) People always confuse them..so I just count it all as the same thing.relentlessimp said...

I haven't had to defend being a gamer before, though if I had to I would just compare it to watching television or reading a book.

Nah, wife accepts it(most of the time), friends are no pc haters either, so no one who counts makes problems.

Most of my friends play games, not all are avid gamers, and non are modders as I am, but they understand what I'm talking about and like to play as well. My mother is an avid Sims gamer now
My fault really, I thought she may like the game but never expected it to be that bad at her age (she is pas 60).
Usually when someone start attacking my hobbies and interest my only response is "if you respect me you will respect what I choose to spend my time on or at the very least stay silent about it" and if sad person doesn't respect me than it's the end of discussion and any kind of friendly relationships between us. I have no use for nonsense like that in my live, it's to short to waist on people I don't like.

Video game entertainment is huge, and it's just growing bigger and bigger. The interest in it is nothing to apologize for. That's what I think anyway.

This obviously isn't going to be moved, I think we accept the fact that this is/should have been off topic.
Being a college student, I'm pretty busy with classes and intramurals and all that other junk that we do here, and playing games is what i do with a lot of my free time. I hear comments from my roommates about it, but they play games as well.
I think people may see a difference in a hobby compared to entertainment choice based on the game or type of game you are playing.
For instance, if I'm playing Dragon Age while my roommates play Madden, I've become nerdy, and it's no longer a hobby. But once I put in my copy of Madden I'm just playing my xbox again, and playing video games can be seen as a hobby.

My father is the reason I game today(I sat on his lap and he taught me how to play Baldur's Gate), and my boyfriend is an avid gamer as well, though he prefers RTS/FPS games to RPGs. I talk avidly about it to my family who don't game as well. They don't get it, but I don't care. It's either me talking about games or animal rights.

my father is always telling me that I "have to quit wasting my time on video games" <_<
Since I don't live with him, (or live in the same province), I just ignore him

Not really. Most people get it any more. Gaming as a industry has hit a mainstream point with the younger generations to an extent that it is accepted.

Actually i'm less of a gamer by now than most of the people who used to bother me with the topic.
Funny how Sims & mainstream MMOs have changed things
Never been much on the defensive though, i do whatever i do at a given moment

I laugh when people say they don't think gaming is a hobby. Is it always a hobby? No. But for many of us, it is. Hell, for some of us (myself included) it's a lifestyle.

Not really, but that is mostly because I dont care anymore.
My co-workers sometimes joke around about it and I just go along with it.
I always laugh though, when there are actually people that belief gaming is bad for you, and look apon it as a negative influence. These people are just to dumb to take serieus.

No, most of my friends are gamers or are at least people that understand online social activities and gaming. The only time I have to be 'defensive' is around certain family members 'behind the times' when it comes to technology/online interactivity. They don't understand how someone can stay on the computer for more than an hour.

Hobby? It'll be my job sooner or later.
That's my defense.

Eh, my parents don't quite get it, but they don't mind that I do it as long as I balance it out with school/work (which I generally do). They do get worried that my brother plays WAY too much video games, but he almost never leaves the house except for classes.
Almost all of my friends are avid gamers, and I've converted several of them to Bioware fandom, so I don't have to defend myself with them. I get to gush about things together instead.
