they and the world gave up, i won the battle

perhaps i lost though :P

Seriously though, in my off time im just looking to relax and do things i like.  Gaming or playing one of bioware's latest and greatest games is something i happen to enjoy.  :)

I do what I like as a hobby, if someone don't like it it's there problem not mine.

Let me explain the question.  It has come up again recently with my obsession with Dragon Age: Origins, but it applies to gaming in general.

Do you constantly have to defend yourself from friends and/or family about your gaming hobby?
Do you have friends/family who are not gamers that do not understand?

I ask because my wife is not a gamer, and she doesn't quite get it, my parents also never really understood.  Most of my friends are non-gamers as well and they don't get it either.  I constantly have to defend gaming as a valid hobby.  I ask them how is it differnt than when they spend hours reading books, or playing Golf, or watching TV?

Anyone else have this problem?  I thought it was a good question, not sure if it has been discussed before.

To the OP:

Yes, my parents don't really understand the hobby. My expereince is the same as yours, luckily my brother loves playing games (though not extensively as me). I don't really have to defend myself, but I have tried to explain the hobby and why I do it.  I'm not sure how to resolve it really, but it isn't a terrible problem.

TV is boring to me, for the most part. It lacks interaction that I desire. B)

Well the video game industry is kinda big now so more people get it these days.

If they however still don't see gaming as a hobby or usefull timespending it really annoys me..

It's your life and you should do as you see fit imo, in good proportions off course.
