So RPGs = no emphasis on player skill whatsoever and leave all combat up to randomly determined dice rolls?

Pretty much. The point is that an RPG is a game wherein the players success/failure is determined with no regard for your own personal skill at the action or clicking reflexes. The role replaces your own abilities.

Traditionally that's what a roleplaying game is.  You act out your part and the "game" factor is through stats and the randomness of dice rolls.  D&D was more about imagination than it was twitch reflexes.

When I was a kid I used to play a roleplaying game on the playground.  It was called space marine war.  I ran around and pointed by imagainary rifle at aliens.  ME2 has manifested my boyhood dreams in a video game.  How is that any different than D&D?  How is ME2 "less" of a roleplaying game because it doesn't have dice rolls?

Their idea of an RPG is very different to normal people.

That's funny and all, but you obviously don't really know what roleplaying actually is since you seem to think the larping nerds are doing something completely different.  Actually they are roleplaying in the most extreme sense, such that an actor in a play would.  Chip it away a bit, add some dice and make it more "normal person" friendly and you have pen and paper games like D&D.

Now implement such a system on a computer and you have MUDS.  Add in graphics and take away the multiplayer aspect and you have games like Wizardry and Might and Magic.  Add them to consoles and you have Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy.  Those are all the very core of what makes a real RPG.

This game is not an RPG, it's an action game with a lot of interactive cut scenes and customization so limited that it may as well be the same as just picking up a new weapon in any other action game.

Very very well put. Very similar to what I've been saying on a number of these threads. It's just that a lot of people formed their onw incorrect ideas of what an RPG is, so when they hear the specific breakdown of how RPGs came into being and evolved into video games, they get offended and imediately reject it despite the concepts soundness.

Basically in allllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll RPG u need Stats, customization, and variety of choises! WHERE R THOSE STATS IN MASS EFFECT 2 ????????????????????????????

i bet 20 dollars that u wont find them in ME2, i really bet 20 bucks!!

Basically yes when it comes to combat. Except you try to skew those odds through strategy (the items you equip, the base stats you have).

By that logic cops and robbers or cowboys and indians or playing my little princess are role playing games too just because you are "playing" a certain "role". By that logic any computer game where you play a character of any sort, whether it's master chief or Guybrush Threepwood would be a role playing game and the only ones that wouldn't be RPGs would be strategy games and Tetris. Whether one likes it or not, the term RPG has attained a certain historical meaning even if there are other games where you are playing roles/play pretend.

So by all your guys standards World of Warcraft would probably be the best RPG ever correct? It has TONS of loot, a huge variety of customization, tons of possible characters, a huge world to explore, and the combat is based off nice comfy RNG.

Play acting does not equal Role Playing. Very often role playing includes play acting, but they are not always the same thing.

Every time, it's this same tired old argument. Other games are not RPGs because they don't share the correct characteristics. WarcraftIII was a strategy because it involed unit production, base logistics, and combat strategy. RPGs do not have logistics and unit production as part of their core. The only aspects that WarcraftIII shared with an RPG is individual protagonist/antagonist characters with a statistical representation that you followed through the game.

A "real" rpg is one where you have to remember to drink water, and space travel takes five hours real time. Not these huge decisions or visceral combat stuff.

Dice don't particular matter to it. They are just the way all RPGs have determined encounter or ability outcomes. The point is that Shepard points the gun, and Shepard pulls the trigger. You just tell him who to shoot and using which abilities. He'll do the rest wihtout you. Look at NWN. That was an RPG. It just had swords, archery and spells, instead of guns and biotics.

We purists know that an RPG is just an inventory management system with a story attached to it.

So they made an RPG with customization and dialog and named it Baldur's Gate and you loved it. And they made a shooter with customization and dialog and named it Mass Effect and you loved it. It all sounds nice to me.

By all your criteria it appears to be an excellent one...traditional style combat, huge amounts of loot, vast, open world, total player freedom...

I didn't say anything about loot, or open worlds. And criteria have nothing to do with quality. It is a matter of definition only.
