This is NO April Fools' Day joke; - I have discovered (and posted instructions) on how to:

Romance these characters as a female Shepard:

  • Tali'Zorah nar Rayya
  • Subject Zero
  • Miranda Lawson
Romance these characters as a male Shepard:

  • Garrus Vakarian
  • Thane Krios
  • Jacob Taylor

Introduction

This savegame modification works best if you play with the default male/female face, else you might get a temporary visual glitch on your character until you return to your default gender. Thus, for a smooth play-trough I advice you to start a vanilla game with the an default face. However, if you are an expert you can "tune" any face with Gibbed's save editor too, but that it outside of the scoop of this romance guide.

Now for the "complicated" part. The romance triggers activate by a flag "IsFemale=False/True" i.e. if you as a "female" initiate a talk with Jack when she is "open" for a romance with a male your are (as far as my initial testing have shown) romance GAME OVER with her. In other words, before you talk to any character you want to romance as the same sex *SAVE THE GAME*.

I now presume you play as a female hero. So, when you know Jack is "open" for a romance, load a savegame near Jack into Gibbed's save editor and change "IsFemale=True" to "IsFemale=False". Now save the changes and TAB back into Mass Effect 2, load the modified save and talk to Jack as a "male". When done with the talk and the romance is ON, save the game and tab out, start Gibbed's save editor and load the savegame, then change  "IsFemale=False" back to "IsFemale=True". TAB back and load the save... and continue play as normal.

I am not 100% sure, but once you "activated" a romance as the BioWare *intended* (politically correct) gender it seems that you do not need "change" the gender again.

Tali romance with my female hero <3

Image 2: http://www.mediafire...2dgmwiz&thumb=6

From my own experiences with Tali, Before I initiated the romance with her I modified my savegame to turn my female into a "male", and once the romance was "ON" I just changed back into a female and advanced it as one. I don't know if the other "romances" might have "additional" safeguards, but as long you play smart i.e. always SAVE before talking to your romance interest, you can "correct" any BioWare safeguards by changing the "gender" and "pass the checkpoint" to later when its "passed" turn back to your intended gender and "consume/enjoy" the romance/game.

Detailed step-by-step Instructions:

Step 1. In Mass Effect 2 go to Options/Gameplay and turn on: Subtitles

Explanation: - Please forgive me in advance for a slight romance spoiler, as I understand it, the only romances that support dual (male/female) voice-overs (Mark Meer/Jennifer Hale) is the Morinth and Kelly Chambers romances.

So when you as a "female" romance (as example) Tali your character will stand silent due to the fact that there is no actual recorded sound from Jennifer Hale for romances intended only for the male hero. The same is actual for the male hero too regarding romances only intended for the female hero.

Therefore it is imperative that you turn on subtitles in Options/Gameplay so you can read what your character say/respond to their romantic interest.

Step 2. Download Gibbed's save editor: http://www.mediafire.com/?ti2r3d2gx1y

Step 3. Unpack Gibbed's save editor and open a relevant savegame.

Explanation: - Mass Effect 2 savegame folders in XP are located in this directory:
..\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\Documents and Settings\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\YourProfileName\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\My Documents\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\BioWare\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\Mass Effect 2\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\Save

Step 4.  Once the savegame is loaded move down to the tab named "- 2. squad" and then click on the "+ Player" - now a branch will open up, move down to "Is Female" and change it to the opposite i.e. if it stands "False" change it to "True" or (sorry for repeating myself) or the reversed if its applicable.

Explanation: Make sure to SAVE THE GAME before you talk to a crew member you want to romance, since if you talk to her/him as the "not intended gender" you cannot advance/activate the romance i.e. you can ONLY activate/start a romance as the INTENDED gender i.e. (example) you must talk to Tali as a "male" when you intend to click the "I want to talk to you" selection in order to "activate" the romance. Failure to follow my terrible instructions (sorry, English is not my mother language) will lead to a PERMANENT lockout for your character to romance that crew member as you will be flagged as the "inappropriate gender".

Step 5. Save your changes i.e. move into the relevant savegame folder and overwrite or save as a new save, then load that savegame in Mass Effect 2 and talk to (as example) Tali as a "male" to activate the "romance flag". Once its activated, save the game. Load the save in Gibbed's save editor and change the "Is Female" flag to the reversed. Save the changes and load the game into Mass Effect 2. Yes, now you can romance (as example) Tali as a female

Step 6. Visualise Mark Meer/Jennifer Hale's voiceovers in your head when you read the Subtitles and ENJOY the romances EA did not want BioWare to include...

Cheers

Okogawa

P.S.

You do NOT need to "change your gender" when talking to a crew member you want to romance, it's only before you click a discussion topic with him/her that "activate" the romance like the Tali "I want to talk to you" - and then again, this is ONLY relevant when you have reached the "romance" level...

Ah, this is actually quite interesting - should make a lot of people happy (meanwhile, my FemShep and Thane are happy together for the moment).

Hmm... food for thought... I don't know how Mass Effect 3 will react to F/F and M/M romances. But since we speak about simple savegame flags, I actually *think* they will continue. Ah, hope for the best, plan for the worst.

How do you know when the appropriate time to use this is? Are there specific conversations that are known to have the romance triggers?

Yes, as a quick example if you are uncertain: When playing a female hero, talk with Garrus and get a "feel" for how things go and what events you need to do in order to advance the talks with him. Sooner or later you WILL get a option to romance him.

With the experience of the Garrus talk, just do the same with Tali, and as long you SAVE before you talk with Tali you will 100% get a feeling for when you cannot "continue" to talk with her... then just jump out and load the editor, change your gender, Talk with Tali again and activate the romance. SAVE and LOAD is your friend, with it you cannot go wrong.

OP - Brilliant. Thank you very much!

@ Endurance_117 It has little to do with that and more about freedom to RP the way you want to in a game.

Posted this elsewhere too...

I have been playing female AV’s now for a long time, despite being male in real life. I treat my AV as if they were Asari; genderless. I like the look of the female AV and the voice acting is so much better for the female Sheppard. I find it very limiting not to be able to court Miranda. Her character concept is fascinating to me, and I really liked her progression through the game. She is one of the only new characters that I feel they put some effort into creating.

It’s not about the F/F taboo, some desperate guy nonsense, or anything else to that effect. I hate when people just assume that, though from other posts, all the sex scenes being put on youtube, and stupid news coverage, I can see why people think this way when its brought up. As the saying goes, “the internet is for porn”, if I really want to see some girl on girl action I can find thousands of videos for free in seconds. It’s about character relationships and forming bonds in real life with in game characters. For some of you older gamers, I am sure you still remember the day, and how you felt when Aeris dies in FF7. The thought and emption still chokes me up. In rl I am a paramedic; I have frequently worked on totally mangled children with little emotional feeling or attachment. It’s rare for a game to get past my walls and draw out some emotion, but when it does it’s something special. ME2 failed in that category.

As FemShep there is not character I was interested in exploring this part of the game with, which is why I did not bother with that aspect of the game this time around.  Jacob just didn't fit my characters personality, Garrus and I are like best friends, and Thane was just creepy.  I had a relationship with Liara in the first one after not being able to with Ashley.  Not this time. Thanks for the hack!.  Going to borrow a friends copy & PC save game when they are done as my copy and ME1/ME2 savegames are on the 360.

Honestly, this is pretty cool. I doubt I'd ever use it - plus I play on the 360 so it's not really an option, but it's a neat trick to have.

I am a male (married to a beautiful wife) who plays femShep's as well (for the most part). I do so for three reasons:

#1- Hale is a better voice actor. Period.

#2- I like strong female action characters. I much preferred Revan as a woman than man, although I preferred The Exile as male actually.

#3- I love women, why wouldn't I want to stare at one all day and chase other women while I'm saving the galaxy?

I must admit I was fairly surprised at the openness of DAO (even though they probably got off by using European-ish bisexual stereotypes) to appeal to many demographics. I honestly think it's silly that they didn't do the same with ME2. Kelly doesn't count- she's too easy for my liking.

If it's a "cannon" thing, they pretty much throw that out the door by force-feeding you as a Soldier through the entire game no matter what class you make yourself. (I get it's most likely a coding/cutscene load increase issue, but it still bother's me that my Adept runs around with an Assault rifle in cutscenes)

*Edit: I play on xbox 360, so this isn't really an option, and my post was a bit off-topic, but I appreciate the OP's ingenuity to appeal to the varried demographics... and us men. :P

I've seen this post elsewhere, but whoever originally made it is quite the conspiracy theorist.

"The romances EA didn't want Bioware to include!"

Yeah, cuz they could never have free will and EA made them cut it from the game, ruining their masterpiece!!! After all they voiced all the dialogue for this right?

...

Oh. Wait.

Don't know why EA wouldn't want same-sex romances in ME2 while in whole Sims series (game for much younger audience, and the most popular game of the world I might add) there's same-sex marriages and gay couples could adopt children as well.

Nah, just shows me how hard-up some people are for something as ridiculous as pixel romance.

Oh. Wait.

There actually is dialogue with Tali at least. If you didn't notice, DA:O was published by EA as well. It does include both F/F and M/M romances (<3 Leliana). In conclusion, I don't believe EA had anything to do with it. This is BioWare's decision to strip the game off "unwanted" romances.

However, without the voice acting (why isnt it working? The voice files are there!) it takes away too much of the immersion. Guess I'll pass until someone has found an option to "unlock" the voice files as well :(

I am having trouble with this.
I change my gender before i talk to Tali, i did her loyalty mission, talked to her once, and all went well, i said i was interested.
That was all for that talk, she says she didnt forget what we talked about if i try talking again, so i guess that is it.
Played some more and went to talk to her again, as a male ofcourse, she leads me to the core, says 2 lines of text, and my screen goes black, if i press space, Tali is back to her console working and i can do the same talk again like nothing happend before (), this was supposed to happen. But no go.
Any ideas what to do?

I tried the save editor but can't get it to work.

I load a save but all of the tabs appear blank, nothing is on them.

Edit: Well I am dense. I just worked out I have to do everything on the Raw tab.

Now I can get my femShep with Tali and avoid all that planet scanning.

@Gray_Spectre

Not worth it why? Voice recording when FemShep asks the doctor about "relationship" with Tali is ingame, so it means that part was in the making, and it was only disabled.

Honestly, I approve of this. If the developers won't give you what you want, find a way. I am very much into being able to form a relationship with characters, wether they be sexual or not, I want ot be able to. Right now, unless I am seeing a heterosexual romance I have no options, and my sheperd doesn't like that.

She wants to be friend with Tali, but all I get is the same old loylaty mission, nothign deeper. She wants to be in bed with thane (easy enough), but she doesn't want to be in bed with Garrus, but again,a ll I get is the loyalty mission that everyone gets.

With Garrus and Tali especially there should be a stronger relationship you can form, you have been through so much with them that you should be like old friends, not like you just recruited them.

So many wasted opportunities, it's romance or nothing in ME games, which is very short sighted and sad.

Agreed, there is so much action in DAO in every combination, but its so poorer choice in ME2, sadly. And my char kinda bugs up on romancing Tali, others i dont even bother trying.
