This is NO April Fools' Day joke; - I have discovered (and posted instructions) on how to:
Romance these characters as a female Shepard:Romance these characters as a male Shepard:
- Tali'Zorah nar Rayya
- Subject Zero
- Miranda Lawson
- Garrus Vakarian
- Thane Krios
- Jacob Taylor
Introduction
This savegame modification works best if you play with the default male/female face, else you might get a temporary visual glitch on your character until you return to your default gender. Thus, for a smooth play-trough I advice you to start a vanilla game with the an default face. However, if you are an expert you can "tune" any face with Gibbed's save editor too, but that it outside of the scoop of this romance guide.
Now for the "complicated" part. The romance triggers activate by a flag "IsFemale=False/True" i.e. if you as a "female" initiate a talk with Jack when she is "open" for a romance with a male your are (as far as my initial testing have shown) romance GAME OVER with her. In other words, before you talk to any character you want to romance as the same sex *SAVE THE GAME*.
I now presume you play as a female hero. So, when you know Jack is "open" for a romance, load a savegame near Jack into Gibbed's save editor and change "IsFemale=True" to "IsFemale=False". Now save the changes and TAB back into Mass Effect 2, load the modified save and talk to Jack as a "male". When done with the talk and the romance is ON, save the game and tab out, start Gibbed's save editor and load the savegame, then change "IsFemale=False" back to "IsFemale=True". TAB back and load the save... and continue play as normal.
I am not 100% sure, but once you "activated" a romance as the BioWare *intended* (politically correct) gender it seems that you do not need "change" the gender again.

From my own experiences with Tali, Before I initiated the romance with her I modified my savegame to turn my female into a "male", and once the romance was "ON" I just changed back into a female and advanced it as one. I don't know if the other "romances" might have "additional" safeguards, but as long you play smart i.e. always SAVE before talking to your romance interest, you can "correct" any BioWare safeguards by changing the "gender" and "pass the checkpoint" to later when its "passed" turn back to your intended gender and "consume/enjoy" the romance/game.
Detailed step-by-step Instructions:
Step 1. In Mass Effect 2 go to Options/Gameplay and turn on: Subtitles
Explanation: - Please forgive me in advance for a slight romance spoiler, as I understand it, the only romances that support dual (male/female) voice-overs (Mark Meer/Jennifer Hale) is the Morinth and Kelly Chambers romances.
So when you as a "female" romance (as example) Tali your character will stand silent due to the fact that there is no actual recorded sound from Jennifer Hale for romances intended only for the male hero. The same is actual for the male hero too regarding romances only intended for the female hero.
Therefore it is imperative that you turn on subtitles in Options/Gameplay so you can read what your character say/respond to their romantic interest.
Step 2. Download Gibbed's save editor: http://www.mediafire.com/?ti2r3d2gx1y
Step 3. Unpack Gibbed's save editor and open a relevant savegame.
Explanation: - Mass Effect 2 savegame folders in XP are located in this directory:
..\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\Documents and Settings\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\YourProfileName\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\My Documents\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\BioWare\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\Mass Effect 2\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\Save
Step 4. Once the savegame is loaded move down to the tab named "- 2. squad" and then click on the "+ Player" - now a branch will open up, move down to "Is Female" and change it to the opposite i.e. if it stands "False" change it to "True" or (sorry for repeating myself) or the reversed if its applicable.
Explanation: Make sure to SAVE THE GAME before you talk to a crew member you want to romance, since if you talk to her/him as the "not intended gender" you cannot advance/activate the romance i.e. you can ONLY activate/start a romance as the INTENDED gender i.e. (example) you must talk to Tali as a "male" when you intend to click the "I want to talk to you" selection in order to "activate" the romance. Failure to follow my terrible instructions (sorry, English is not my mother language) will lead to a PERMANENT lockout for your character to romance that crew member as you will be flagged as the "inappropriate gender".
Step 5. Save your changes i.e. move into the relevant savegame folder and overwrite or save as a new save, then load that savegame in Mass Effect 2 and talk to (as example) Tali as a "male" to activate the "romance flag". Once its activated, save the game. Load the save in Gibbed's save editor and change the "Is Female" flag to the reversed. Save the changes and load the game into Mass Effect 2. Yes, now you can romance (as example) Tali as a female
Step 6. Visualise Mark Meer/Jennifer Hale's voiceovers in your head when you read the Subtitles and ENJOY the romances EA did not want BioWare to include...
Cheers
Okogawa
P.S.
You do NOT need to "change your gender" when talking to a crew member you want to romance, it's only before you click a discussion topic with him/her that "activate" the romance like the Tali "I want to talk to you" - and then again, this is ONLY relevant when you have reached the "romance" level...
So this can only be used on characters with a default face? Doesn't sound right. I'll have to pass.

OP - Brilliant. Thank you very much!
@ Endurance_117 It has little to do with that and more about freedom to RP the way you want to in a game.
Posted this elsewhere too...
I have been playing female AV’s now for a long time, despite being male in real life. I treat my AV as if they were Asari; genderless. I like the look of the female AV and the voice acting is so much better for the female Sheppard. I find it very limiting not to be able to court Miranda. Her character concept is fascinating to me, and I really liked her progression through the game. She is one of the only new characters that I feel they put some effort into creating.
It’s not about the F/F taboo, some desperate guy nonsense, or anything else to that effect. I hate when people just assume that, though from other posts, all the sex scenes being put on youtube, and stupid news coverage, I can see why people think this way when its brought up. As the saying goes, “the internet is for porn”, if I really want to see some girl on girl action I can find thousands of videos for free in seconds. It’s about character relationships and forming bonds in real life with in game characters. For some of you older gamers, I am sure you still remember the day, and how you felt when Aeris dies in FF7. The thought and emption still chokes me up. In rl I am a paramedic; I have frequently worked on totally mangled children with little emotional feeling or attachment. It’s rare for a game to get past my walls and draw out some emotion, but when it does it’s something special. ME2 failed in that category.
As FemShep there is not character I was interested in exploring this part of the game with, which is why I did not bother with that aspect of the game this time around. Jacob just didn't fit my characters personality, Garrus and I are like best friends, and Thane was just creepy. I had a relationship with Liara in the first one after not being able to with Ashley. Not this time. Thanks for the hack!. Going to borrow a friends copy & PC save game when they are done as my copy and ME1/ME2 savegames are on the 360.
Yeah, I pretty much agree, and almost exclusively I play female AVs when possible... and most specifically, Miranda does better sound like a natural bisexual, if not a natural lesbian altogether. (Most of my ex-girlfriends were bisexuals, so I know this kind of thing.)
