So.. when she gets hit, shields go down... why doesn't she choke to death and start bleeding from her eyes.
Biotics my ass, I'm not supposed to make up crap so "it makes sense". I sure as hell don't see any biotic bubble around their bodies/heads. It's flat out lazy design (and or a Film Degree-guy was in charge...apparently..) not to give us this sublte yet important tool.
The people need space suits. They also need options for the player to turn on armor sets/helms/styles as they so please. At the least, give us toggable helmet choices for squadmates.

Kinetic barriers protect against environmental conditions. Miranda only needs the mask for oxygen since she can generate her own kinetic barriers.
Christ, I really didn't want to nerd out this much today, but...no, they don't. If they did, you'd suffocate in pretty short order while using one.

Has it ever occured to you that designing 12 times X [X being the number of different armor models] can be one huge work task to acomplish?Noktarn wrote...
I don't give a CRAP about cinematography. In a ROLEPLAYING GAME there is customization. There are options. *I* lead the experience, not some director who feels facial expressions are important.
Again; why have such realism and customization in ME1, only to totally gut it in ME2? Did they hire an art coordinator from some film academy or something?
Working with free-form 3D CAD programms is time consuming, and getting good looking and actually usable armor skins is even more time consuming.
In ME1, we had 4 different Weapon models, and the different products are distinguished by colour. How realistic is that?
And the armor skins were basically diferntiated for humans, turians, krogans and quarians, and again the different models were differentiated by colour. How realistic is that?
But what really raises my hackles is the bottomless "I want, I want" . As if BioWare made a consentius decision out of pour spite, malice and/or laziness to make the game worse.
As a game developper you get a fixed amount of money from your publisher (in this case EA) and a fixed release date, and in that time you have to develop a game. And while there are thousands of nice ideas floating around, after the brain storming some people have to sit down and actually programm the game. And you never have time to bring in everything you want to.
BioWare made a decision to give all characters an armor/clothing set, because they concentrated on other aspects of the game. You might not like it, but at least respect their decision like an adult.

My gripes are small- even if the biotic aura were to explain how she does it, a simple codex entry or some concrete record could put my mind to rest as I'm willing to let things like this go in the end. But her suit just looks like spandex or Under Armor. I can imagine alternate suits even now that could still look saaaaxy but could also showcase features that could lend to the believeability that the suit could offer some protection or pressurization.

She'd be fine if it was a rebreather. But she'd always need to wear it, 'cause if kinetic barriers really do 'protect against environmental conditions', then she's constantly in a (very small) container which nothing can get through - including oxygen.
Anyhoo, just to geek out a little more, the wiki states that kinetic barriers do not, in fact, protect against toxins, radiation, or temperature.

Hi guys, I was just passing by.
So I heard that this game is for entertainment?
I'm also suspecting that Yvonne Strahovski 3D-models in tight shiny suits get a high score on entertainment value from the people in the marketing group of this game.
Yes you are right, Miranda's clothing makes the game drastically more fun
Also as Khavos said, the kinetic barriers only protect against objects moving at high velocity - this is why they are "kinetic". Such a barrier would not protect against the effects of vacuum or any sort of radiation/thermic/toxic danger, which is why you could be poisoned through your shields in the first game.

Kinetic barriers protect against impacts and projectiles (objects carrying kinetic energy- the energy of motion). This has already been explained but wouldn't really help against environmental threats like space.

As others have pointed out shields/kinetic barriers are probably the best explanation, you see the best example in the first 5 minutes of the game with Joker in the Normandy cockpit.
Howso? Wasn't he wearing at least a full facemask?

Joking aside- I'm only pointing out things that just don't fit in my mind- i'm not even halfway through the game at the moment but I really enjoy it- I can't put it down!

He was wearing the thing mirana has.
The funny part is you guys are just manipulating with lore established in the game and novel to further your goals of character customization. Funny and ironic.

The game was built up from ME1. The code was there. Hell, they even model Garrus with a god damn helmet while you meet him. It was a conscious effort to make them non-toggable for cinematic "greatness" which does NOT appeal to everyone. Toggable is so simple for them to do. They can reserve 30 minutes to integrate the ME1 toggable helmet code, done in the squad interface just like "the old days".
Laziness. Defending them on account of development time is ignorant. You have no clue on their methods, time or money... we do however know their choices (or lack thereof).

This is not ME were there were 4 models: Human/Assari, Korgan, Quarian and Turian that themselves had restrictions due to their classes as Tali could only use Light Armor, Garrus could not use Heavy Armor and Wrex could not use light armor.
ME2 have no armor system, each NPC remains in their set of armor/clothing and so were are you adding the helmet? its not going to clamp with some models and that is why they have breather masks.
Unless you want then to create unique armor for those few occasions were the helmet/mask is used and as someone said, there are NO operations in the vacuum of space besides the very first time you take control of Shepard.

A lot of you complaining about the outfits don't know what a vacuum is or what it's effects on the body are. Do yourselves a favor and go look up what a traditional space suit is made out of and why and you'll see just how ignorant some of you are.
The vacuum part doesn't bother me all that much. I don't think you ever fight in a vacuum to begin with.
My gripe was more that she - and several others - decided it'd be cool to walk into mercenary bases in street clothes. Just doesn't make a lot of sense no matter how much suspension of disbelief you give it. That, of course, is really just stemming from the lack of customization complaint that's at the heart of all this.

The ones with armor "for some reason" choose not to wear them in battle. This is the problem. If I want to run into a fight with helmets on my squad I should be able to, ala ME1. This is not "just" an argument about who wears what in space. I am not a fan of exposing my little pixel toons heads to enemy fire for no good reason.
