This page is intended to be a small guide for hints, tips and tricks to easing and completing Mass Effect 2. Since these are small pieces of information that are not intended to completely change the way you play, please leave spoilers out. When to complete missions, which choices to make and where to go is NOT the goal of this guide and should be left to the story discussion page.

I am writing this from playing the 360 version and would love help from the PC players to fill this out.

Redeeming Codes

For Xbox 360 users, it is easiest to first start up the game in your console and register your Cerberus code from there. You must use this site to redeem all codes. To make sure you get your items, log into www.ea.com using the bar at the bottom of the screen using the email you log into this site with and make sure your gamertag is linked to that account. If is not and is linked to the wrong account, you must visit support.ea.com/chat or phone them at 866-543-5435

For PC users:  All codes must be redeemed at this site. If you have a problem with the Cerberus code of your collector’s edition, there was a production error that caused the bonus collector’s items codes to be printed on the Cerberus card. You must contact support.ea.com/chat or 866-543-5435 to have a new code emailed to you

General Gameplay Tips:

Difficulty:   Play through the game on normal or veteran first. The achievements gained will ease the transitions into the harder difficulties. Hardcore and Insane are not intended to be played through the first time, not due to lack of player skill but of game mechanics. Choosing these difficulties can make classes such as Adept, Vanguard and Engineer un-necessarily frustrating.

Facial Look:  If you find that you lack the artistic skills to create a Shepard of your liking, there is a code at the bottom of the facial creation page that you may input codes found around the net and at www.masseffect2faces.com

Scanning:   Scanning is a mini-game used to get minerals for the creation of upgrades. In the 360 version of the game, while you are holding down the scan trigger you may use the right control stick to turn the planet. This allows full directional control.

Hacking:   The hacking minigame is played by matching the brick of data at the top of the screen to one of many bricks found scrolling through the playing field. Upon confirmation of the same brick of data, you must find two more to complete the game. You have three chances to make correct guesses and scrolling across a red block, will remove one correct data-block from your total or end the game should you have none.

Feeding Fish: Commander Shepard has an aquarium in his personal quarters in which you may buy fish from stores around the Galaxy in order to fill. You must travel to your quarters between missions in order to press the button in the center of the aquarium to feed your fish and keep them alive. However, rumor has it, that if you asked nicely, someone on board may wish to fill this role for you... -Tip by Clumsy Ninja

Space Hamster: He stands ready. -Tip by a Rashemen Ranger

Powers:

Shepard:   Commander Shepard has the unique ability to curve his/her powers around objects to strike enemies in hiding. This can be done by aiming at the general area of your target so that the orange targeting box appears, then pulling your cursor away from the target in the direction you wish the ability to curve around. You may then press a hotkey to cast the ability. If you lose the targeting lock however, the power will fly straight.

Resistances:   Barriers, Shields and Armor can cause several powers to lose effectiveness. Using powers like Warp and Overload can do great amounts of damage to these states. Abilities like Pull, Throw and Shockwave will cause still damage these protections by a small amount and cause resistant targets to be stunned momentarily, forcing them to stand into an exposed position.

Environment:  With a bit of skill and luck, you can use the environment to your advantage. Many explosive containers lie scattered around the battlegrounds which can be targeted with abilities like Throw and Pull. Not only is this extremely useful but satisfying when you successfully take a target down using it. You may also Overload these objects to cause them to explode with greater force and damage.

Squadmates:

Build a team:   The importance of the squadmates you choose to bring with you in ME2 is of far greater importance than that of ME1. Due to the cooldown changes, you cannot as easily link your own powers together. Remember to chain off your allies or have them chain off of you for the greatest effect.

Loyalty: Loyalty missions open up upon conversation with your squadmates in the second disc. These missions allow the final ability of your squadmates to be unlocked and used. Furthermore, an upgrade entitled "Advanced Training" will allow the use of one of these abilities on Commander Shepard as long as it has been unlocked via a Loyalty mission.

Equipment:

Bonus armors:  You cannot currently toggle the helm on or off.

Helmets:  The Umbra Visor, Recon Hood and Sentry Interface are all currently only available through a U.S Dr.Pepper promotion. Other countries, including Canada, cannot currently attain these items.

Additional Weapons:   Most additional weapons are found through missions, some on harder difficulties. Keep an eye out for these as you travel.

Heavy Pistols:   Despite being marked as an upgrade, some people will find the original Heavy Pistol to be more useful than the Handcannon. This is due to its larger clip size and more ammo capacity, so those who lack aim have more chances to hit.

General Tips:

Xbox 360 Users:
You should check out the tips guide videos on the Xbox 360 Dashboard. -Tip by Clumsy Ninja

Great tips. Also: DON'T FORGET TO FEED YOUR FISH! They die if you don't. I learned this the hard way, but a helpful 'tips' video on the 360 dashboard informed me that they had to be fed. Thanks a lot for letting me know about the dying fish, Kelly. A "Commander, your fish are really hungry." would have been appreciated lol.

While some of these are the most obvious things I've ever read, the rest are actually fairly good.

Especially about the Fish. hrmmm....excuse me a minute, something may be dying..

Yeah, many of the tips here are on the free 360 dashboard video too, so check it out, 360 users.  It's got some nice advice about getting a few of the achievments as well.

Some things may be obvious but trouble crops can easily crop up in such places.

Thanks Clumsy! I added that tip and a little extra!
