As for the AR Engineer, I didn't like it too much. I don't know if I just didn't like the feel of the AR I was using(forgot which one it gave me) but I didn't like the burst. It reminded me of the beginning SMG which I hate.

On my engineer run, I chose SR and loved it. If you max out mechanic, you can cryo blast multiple opponents, one shot each of them from afar, and use cryo blast again. Although, this was on Normal for my first run. I can't say how it performs on insanity.

For insanity the best two classes in my opinion are...
Soldier - Adrenaline Rush, with geth shield. Pick up widowmaker as your weapon choice during the story. Pick up squad disrupter ammo, or respec into squad inferno ammo as needed. This will free up your squad's points to spend maxing out abilities.
Infiltrator - Tactical Cloak,  with geth shield. Pick up widowmaker as your weapon choice during the story. Use disrupter ammo till endgame then respec out of it as it is useless against the collectors. Have a squad mate pick up your favorite group ammo.

AR/TC allow you rush squads or reposition yourself as well offer a short time of increased dmg. Geth shield is good defense and 4/4 can give an additional 10% dmg bonus (also Legion's missions give it two upgrades). Widowmaker is best to use to one shot rocket troops and take down Scions/Harbringers quickly.

Learn to play aggressive to cut down on wasted ammo/time. Many times you can turn a corner or start a fight with just gunning one weak guy down and taking his position. Also you can rush (AR/TC) a small cluster and spray the whole group taking their shields down.

Team-mates use sniper rifles (inscissor) and the SMG the best from my experience. Grunt is only worth using when he has all his upgrades - he is a must for IFF. Legion is a beast when he gets the geth rifle (widowmaker) and can one shot some minor enemies.

Team-mate choice is really up to you. Everyone is pretty good if you know how to support them. Some areas such as IFF, Geth, and Collectors are easier with specific setups. Just be sure to assist your team-mates if they come under fire rather than always having them support you. Dead squad members just makes your job harder, waste medi-gel, and a cool down.

Hope that helps =).

Ugh, if you made it through insanity as a shotgun'ing Vanguard... My Helmet's off to you.

update for me: have been sticking it out sentinel with miranda and garrus or mordin and garrus. Things I've noted:

-tech armor is awesome

- warp ammo is not the best power to have picked. Should have gone for geth shield or AP ammo

-Need something with more range than smg- will pick up sniper rifle later on as opposed to AR

-heavy pistol >> smg for armored foes, at least this early in the game with very few upgrades

-Jacob is useless

Regarding sentinel:

Hmm, I found the Warp Ammo to be invaluable on insanity. it basically made the smg an "OK" option for taking out armor (obviously just firing warp bolts at them is much better though :D ) The reason i didn't choose another defensive, is the 12 second cooldown (I think you can get it as low as 8'ish) slows down the warp bombs. And yeah, during weapon upgrade, I went with the sniper rifle. I could never keep the heavy Pistol Ammo'd up on insanity. I hated it. so the warp ammo helped when I had to shoot down Engineers with the SMG.

I've played through with an infiltrator and an adept on insanity. The infiltrator had a slightly easier time because he could take out the weaker enemies like collector drones or troopers really quickly with some well placed sniper shots. I used reave as a bonus talent. Reave is for some reason more effective against barriers than warp and more effective than incinerate against armour.

While playing the adept with armour piercing ammo I rarely used any power besides pull and warp. Just use your minions to strip shields, warp against barriers and an assault rifle with armour piercing bullets for taking down armour. As soon as their defences are down ->pull field and win. I didn't even know that singularity works against protected enemies too.

I'm not sure which class is the most powerful. It's either the infiltrator, soldier or possibly the adept. But I am certain that the engineer is, once again, by far the weakest class.

You are doing something terrible wrong! I'm finding exactly the opposite: insanity wise, Engineer is almost overpowered.

My first playthrough was a Vanguard-hardcore difficulty and I found it difficult,
For the second I tried
a)Adept: I found myself spamming warp + AP ammo then pull field
b)Sentinel, you need every shield upgrade to make it work, otherwise you go down very easy and not being carefull leads you to Tech Armor spam, 6sec cooldown in insanity it's a very looong cooldown.

Now playing an engineer, for the first time I've reached Horizon without dying a single time. I'm using Energy drain to take down shields (it works against armor too)  while keeping mine's up, Explosive drone, and incinerate volleys for armor and reg. Against krogan and people with insane life, cryoblast and focus fire. Even krogans are easy to take down, In places where there are robots and organics alike, take dominate; drone+IA hacking + dominate it's pure madness. My companions are Miranda (unstable warp) and Jacob with squad fire ammo (sometimes I replace JAcob with jack)

The biggest problems are the same as infiltrator, husks zergs are very hard, you go down very easily and you have to retrain a lot to fit with the mission;

The conclusion is the same: you are a crowd control god as an engineer, but keep the distance!!!

BTW: lately when you have Tali and Legion, making a drone harassment squad is priceless!!!:)

Edit: Spelling

finished insanity like an hour ago, with infiltrator (plus skill was heavy reave).

found it quite strong:

-cloak if needed to run and hide for a bit

-reave against organics is awesome, as it heals back, and damages a lot

-reave against barriers and armor

-AoE incinerate against organics (with armor). awesome against husks

-disruptor ammo all the way, except endgame ofc. upgraded SMG is awesome with disruptor against shields during the whole game

-the widow antimat rifle is pure awesomeness. I don't have any other words for it :)

in the endgame, with tali in the squad, the drone helped a lot against Harbringer and his controlled drones (really, 3 out of 3 drones got possessed, and i got pissed :P)

It's not the weakest this time around. Incinerate, Overload and the Attack Drone lose very little of their effectiveness on Insanity.

Not as well, with every individual enemy having some defense of some sort.
Assault Rifle and Sniper are the only viable choices for the Engineer, as the Shotgun does very little damage on insanity.

This.

Seriously.

Harbinger is only dangerous if you're behind poor cover.

Soldier easily.
Most health, Adrenalinaline Rush is basically a 5 sec I win button and with the best constant damage output in the game..this is no contest.
but Infiltrator is close. Vanguard is hard to play but if you master charge you can kill really fast, even on Insanity. I have not played as Sentinel yet, so no idea about that class.

I tried soldier on insanity with fully evolved adrenaline, the one that gives damage resistance. If I pop my head up to empty a clip with adrenaline rush on, the enemy takes off all my shields and half my health. Seriously, damage reduction means nothing on insanity because everything hurts so damn much,

Damage reduction for Hardened Adrenaline Rush applies only to health.  Not shields or barriers.  I fiddled with Reave, but Geth Shields is a nice solid choice too.  It boosts your shields and your damage.

Just finished my second game on Hardcore with a Sentinel. I went with Reave/Guardian, and only ever used Miranda (for overload and warp) and Zaeed (Conc shot/Inferno grenade). The synergy of these 3 for burst damage is pretty intense. Suited Zaeed with a sniper and Miranda with a pistol and kept them back for their abilities while I took point. Very simple for pretty much any ranged targets, though Varren/Husks got complicated at times. Going to try to repeat this on Insanity I think.

Im starting a Sentinel. So the main Abilities to be using would be Warp, Overload, Reave and Tech Armour?

Also im deciding between AR or Sniper with Warp Ammo.

Any tips?

The soldier was pretty easy to beat insanity with. Used warp ammo and ran with Miranda and Moridin. Aside from a few areas I hardly died. Teammates would die in some areas and I just cleaned up myself. Not many enemies actually come after you and those that do can be ripped apart using adrenaline rush with the lmg. For those that sit back you just use AR each time you come out of cover.

I started off as sentinel on insanity and it is awesome! I chose reave as my extra skill and I can break through any defence with warp and overload. I also have super defence with tech armour. With the super overpowered SMG, Mordin and Miranda I pretty much breeze through every sequence now.

so @ Tyrael100, once you get the SMG you should be fine. Just make sure you take off the shields or barriers on any person who charges you or flanks you. Your tech armour should knock them back once it's gone and you can reave anyone who is too far for that on your flank. Miranda and Mordin are the best complement at taking off armour, shields or barriers. Spam the skills if you need to. As to what extra weapon to pick. I say go with the sniper. The SMG is already a fine substitute for the AR. Though I heard there's a bug with the sniper atm which bioware said they'd fix. *shrugs*

First play through was as a vanguard, picked up a shot gun for the advanced weapon. When for a second go and picked up the geth shield. Originally i thought i would be able to pick up an AR but i was mistaken. Dont feel like biting the bullet and continuing as a squishy vanguard. After reading these replies i am still uncertain what i will try next lol.

take the snipoer rifle man. obviously. insanity without a sniper rifle is not going to be easy. forget the  AR, use the SMG for spray and pray.

does anyone know the actual stats for warp vs. reave???

my sentinels warp on insanity isnt very effective at all, plus the health restore might be useful on insanity. i dont want warp and reave but im not sure whci is better. ive used warp, and its decent, but ive seen samara use reave and she takes out **** easy. the health regen is nice on insanity too. just not sure which is better.

My easiest play through on insanity was with my sentinel. I focused on maxing out Tech Armor, Warp, and Reave (Picked it up as early as I could). I always run with Garrus in my squad for squad AP ammo, and picked up AR proficiency. I found that shielded enemies were less common than enemies with barrier and armor, so I figured that I'd more use out of having two abilities that are effective against both... they're damned good damage too. The Avenger + AP ammo is pretty beast too, and on insanity, getting rid of defenses is paramount, so the Sentinel really starts to stand out.

My Soldier run through was the fastest on insanity, though it was harder.

I haven't seen any posts recommending using dominate as a bonus skill. Is that because it's hard to get or because there are better options? I've personally found that it's helpful to use because it creates a tank across the battlefield, keeping enemies from rushing you.

On insanity, I used Infiltrator + Widow rifle and took Legion and Tali/Grunt with me. The explosive drone makes the game way too easy.

Scions, Harbingers, Geth Hunters, even swarms of Husks are no problem. Send a drone as soon as it's available and all enemies flock to it. Having two drones is not even fair (ie: Tali and Legion). As an example, the time it takes Harbinger to kill a drone is usually about the same as the recharge time.

I finished Reaper IFF and Final missions without as much as losing shields...

So basically I concur with this:
