So I finished ME2 but I can't figure out why Mordin died?! I really liked his character so I'm kinda bummed he died somehow. I got his upgrade as well as his loyalty. Would there be any reason why he would have died in the end? I finished the end mission pretty quickly so I don't think it was because it took too long to finish.
Anyone else have that experience?
Also in the ending scene I was surprised to not see everyone in my squad in the cargo hold. It was just Jack, Garrus, Legion, and Grunt. I was wondering where everyone else went to?

Well I went through the ending again but took Mordin in my squad for the final boss. This time he survived as well as everyone I left behind. Very wierd?

Mordin has a notoriously high mortality rate. Just check out some of the other threads talking about the Squad Survival at the end of the game. You'll read a lot about it.

Mordin has tendency to die inexplicably. Might be bug.
Keep in party or send on escort mission to ensure survival.

I took him in my last two parties and he survived and the whole team survived as well. That was on my second playthrough. First time through, he died.

For me, i didn't send him back with the crew, neither took with myself and he survived nevertheless. He's just awesome like that

That had happened to me too. Though the strange thing is that I've played ME2 twice, both times I didn't take Modrin with me on any end missions. First time, Mordin lived. Second time, Mordin died.

Basically, the "hold the line" sequence is supposed to be done by soldier classes (techs and biotics had their respective sequences) and Mordin has a very high probability of dying if left to hold the line no matter what. Each character has a squishiness score that determines how good they are at holding that position and Mordin's got the lowest score.
He is an old, hyperactive salarian scientist, not really a front-line soldier type.
