Before I begin, I would have to note that I myself do not really like her character in both ME1 and ME2; to tell the truth, I don't really find Asaris attractive at all. On the other hand, I like Tali - so it's not a xenophobia. It's more about the characteristics of the species, and those that can live thousands of years who choose to spend their youth as either dancers / strippers and evolves into commandos / matriarchs aren't really my kind of women. Fact that they are bisexual (in a way to speak) might be a factor of why many find them attractive, however at least I don't. Liara isn't like most Asaris, but to put it bluntly, it's her obsession (either to archeology or revenge at the enemy's best field) and her voice that breaks most of the interest for me. Can't really like her, no matter how much I try. Just my personal taste there.
That being said, I have to say that this "Liara changed into a ruthless arse (Benezia)" doesn't really seem right.
If your LI in ME1 was in fact Liara, then perhaps you may feel that way. Some people find her more 'mature' than she used to be, but I cannot agree on that either. She has lost what made her look weak (such as Shepard never tired from Embrace Eternity, while Liara - who never made direct contact with either Prothean beacons or Thorian mind - couldn't really take it) and instead shows signs of being hardened. Nevertheless, being hardened doesn't mean that you are more mature. It may as well suggest that you have become more stupid and stubborn (words taken from Shepard's). And when she has this unhealthy obsession to become a Shadow Broker herself to take down the original, well...
However, if your LI was either Ashley or Kaidan and you feel bitter about them ditching you, then there isn't much standing ground for you to say much about Liara. These Alliance soldiers, who were willing to give up their lives (one does, eventually at Vermire) and follow you till the end have just seen you, back from death after two full years, and working for the very organization that everyone showed disgust - Cerberus. This means more to them since they have seen what happened to the other Alliance member, Rear Admiral Kahoku, when he tried to track Cerberus down and expose them.
Would you be able to say nay when they suggest that you are indoctrinated by Cerberus to work for their cause?
Despite what Shepard says in the game, the fact that he/she's using their technology, their ship, their crew and doing their ransom doesn't change a single bit. Perhaps they might even say that you are obsessed with this idea of being a hero, that you are the only person who can save the entire galaxy. Liara thinks the same way; she says she needs to build up her evidence to go against the Shadow Broker, and that she must do it since she is the only one who excels in it.
So why the hate, if you cannot accept who she is now and yet you expect to be accepted by your past LI?
