Mass Effect 2 is a console game first and PC game second, just like it's predecessor. As such, it'll have sub par graphics, less modding capabilities, and poorer optimization than if it were a PC game first and console game second. The vast majority of the textures in this game are 512x512, there's only a few that are higher than that. We can thank the limitations of the 360 for that one. It doesn't help that Unreal Engine 3 was designed mostly for consoles either. Mass Effect 2 would have been much better off in every aspect if BioWare stuck with the Eclipse Engine on this one.

Don't understand why they don't create hires texture and reduce them for 360. We (PC users) could then have the HR ones with minimal work involved. Pretty certain they could batch convert HR textures to LR. I can do it with PS and I'm one man!

I'm certain BW has high-res textures for all their models -even for ME1 there were promo shots that showed high res armor/clothing/NPC skin, that for some reason never made it into the game.

It's understandable that they would have to downsample a lot of textures for the 360, as well. Why they didn't ship the high-res textures with the PC version is the true mystery, though.

Perhaps it would've taken another DVD to fit them in the game ? Who knows. My guess is that they probably didn't want to spend the resources on bug-testing an enhanched version for the PC. Quality assurance is no small task. I guess PC versions nowadays don't justify the costs, anymore.

Pity -but it's not anything gamebreaking or something that would overly hamper my enjoyment of the game. I just hope I'll get to play ME3 on my PC, as well. Everything else is a bonus.

Is there a way for a user made mod pack?

Maybe Microsoft wouldn't want the PC version to look a lot better... Just a thought...

I hope something will be released to improve the textures.... of course, its just a small problem, but in my oppinion, the apperance of the game apart fron the textures is superb, so it would be a shame if the textures would stay only in low res.

Wasn't Dragon age made for the PC rather than a port? that had some really grotty textures too.

I'm willing to pay a small fee for HR textures if that's what it takes! They wonder why PC game sales are down when all we're getting now is crappy console games. I would've still bought this knowing the textures were this bad but they know that. Take it or leave it seems to be the attitude. Then when people leave it they put the low sales down to piracy, even though the 360 has piracy levels close the PC now.

I guess it's something we'll never get official feedback on =| Would be nice if they at least let us mod the game ourselves like it was with Dragon Age.

And the Unreal engine has always been developed primarily for PC's =| For Unreal Tournament, etc.?

I have Mass Effect 2 for the PC. Could it look better? I'm sure. Do I care? No. The PC Game community shoots itself in the foot over graphics every year. I bought a new "gaming" computer and a 360 in 2007. By 2009 my computer couldn't run new games, yet my 360 is obviously going strong. With a console you are guaranteed at least 5 years of consistent gaming. Not so in the PC market.

What makes PC games great and unique are the input devices and the modibility/expandability of the games on it. Improved graphics kill the PC market because with every new graphical improvement you cut out a branch of your user base who cannot afford to upgrade the PC they just bought 2 years ago. Consoles guarantee you stable gaming for lower investment than a gaming PC. Less tech issues, easier to use, etc. Even if your computer meets the required requirements for a new PC release, it's probably not really going to run well enough to play it. Might as well buy the console version for a better experience.

The reason WoW is the best selling and most played PC game..probably ever? is that you can run it by rubbing two sticks together. It runs on ancient machines, it runs on new machines, everyone can play it. Is WoW the greatest looking game? No. But it's a decently fun game that can be played by tons of people.

Whenever you can program for a specific set of hardware requirements you can guarantee a level of quality in the game that is excellent. They are naturally going to program for the 360 because this game is going to ship more units on that platform than the PC version. Do I think the PC version is the superior version? Yes, because of the mouse and keyboard inputs. But a lot of people can't play this game on their computer, so they go out and buy a 360 and ME2 for less than the cost of a mid level computer that might run ME2. Until the PC Game development community settles for good graphics instead of great graphics, you're going to be hosed with a extremely limited user base based upon computer hardware and have to deal with a sizable portion of piracy that is due to the fact that people are sick of buying games that may or may not work on their computer, so they might as well just pirate it and if it doesn't work, no money lost.

PC games have graphical options so machines with differing specs can run them, there is no excuse for not giving us the option to use textures of a reasonable quality. The quality of the texture on that screenshot I posted is appalling, especially as it's for use on the player character.

*Was* is the right wording.

Once they had to compensate for the low ram amount on consoles we all were stuck with the lowest common denominator. Pretty similiar situation as we have with ME2, now -well, worse actually. For ME2 they at least knew in advance that they had to work with limited hw and thus were able to design around it, creating a product that's somewhat easier on the eyes.

I hope you realize that games on a console are highly dumbed down in graphics by comparison to a PC. First off, more than 90% of console games run at 1280x720. Second off, consoles have far less memory available to them. As such, you have a more aliased and lower res texture image than what you get with a PC. Not only that, but consoles lack post processing capabilities. I have a computer sitting in my livingroom that is of the same age as a 360 in terms of hardware release, and it's still pumping out better graphics and faster load times than a 360 could hope to achieve.

Not without finding a way to unpack .pcc files. Once that's figured out, not only could we implement some high resolution textures, but more effective mods as well.

Your clothing isn't  hi res like the head textures are. Just like the first game, and as mentioned..we get a console port here.

But I have to say, you may need to look at your mipmaps settings. I have low res body textures as well but they aren't as ugly as what's been posted here..

I've noticed over at Guru3d that a lot of people using nVidia based cards seem to have a lower texture IQ than the people with ATI cards.

Oh, that's really strange =S Elsewhere it was concluded that NVidia cards had the higher texture settings when compared with ATI cards xD

That's more or less false info unless there's a bug in the game's engine. They're both around the same when it comes to texture quality.

Just a small update. I noticed the Illusive Man has a high res clothing texture =P What on Earth's going on?

I'll post a screen next time I talk to him, unless I'm beaten to it =P

It also seems that Thanes clothing texture is high res too, at least during his quest. I have my quality settings in my drivers set to High Quality, so I wonder if that has something to do with it?

I'm using an ATI card set to high, some are fine others are really poor. If you look at the outfit the Asari in wearing in your second image you can see what I'm on about, compare the lack of detail to the outfit Sheperd is wearing. I don't think it's anything to do with settings, if it was everything would look bad. I don't expect Crysis levels of detail from a port but I don't expect Dreamcast textures to be mixed in there either.

Would that really be that surprising ? Every time you talk to him he's in a basically empty room  -even the limited ram amount of the 360 should be enough to handle 2 or 3 high-res textures at the same time.

Actually with all my settings forced to ultra through the CCC the only places I get stuttering are in the Illusive Man's little room and the Normandy's main (map) area =P I'm fairly sure that it isn't the textures alone doing that ;D

Though I have to do weeks of catching up on school work so I reckon next time I play ME2 I'll be so starved of it I won't notice anything graphical at all =P Low res textures? What textures?

BioWare should drop the UT3 engine and go with the CryEngine 2 engine for ME3. Forgot the console fanboys. We PC gamers deserve an engine worthy to run on our hardware. Yes, I want my game to run in 64-bit mode and consume almost 2GBs of RAM. Yes, I want my $500 video card and $300 CPU to be pushed to their limits so they act as a space heater for my room on those cold winter nights. Yes, I want my game to have cinematic-quality textures, so my 2GB of VRAM is actually being utilized. And yes, I want to be wowed to the point of tears by ME3 with stunning hi-res textures and models.

I can't help but feel like my computer is a SWAT team storming a house only to find the"lethal" target, the game, to be nothing more than a naked obese man sitting at his computer masturbating, a bag of lays chips between his legs, while surfing 4chan *rolling eyes*
