There aren't any....

Given that the locale is supposed to be swarming with them, even though a Horde has broken through to the surface, I find it a bit odd that there were no chance encounters when navigating around down there between thaigs etc.

Thoughts?

That's because they are left with a skeleton crew of sorts, all of the hordes attention is turned to the surface not the deep roads. It's mentioned at several points that the reason it's so quiet in the deep roads(and the only reason you can get as far as you do) is beause the bulk of the darkspawn are elsewhere.

It would have been interesting to come across some reinforcement units of Darkspawn coming up to replenish the ranks.

Or even spiders sense they really aren't part of the darlspawn imo.  You get random wolves and bears, why not spiders.

I was glad there weren't. I found it a bit exhausting going through there the first time, and was very relieved to not face random encounters leaving Caridin's Cross, which is just HUGE.

Yep.  Even just some roving war parties.

And whilst I know that the lore explains somewhat why there shouldn't be that many darkspawn around in the Roads, there are stll lots of dwarves interested in what's going on with Branka, the Legion is always there to deal with, and of course the dwarven cities themselves.

It's quite a long journey, it seems to me, from the thaigs to the dead trenches, and I thought it poor design not to have a few random encoubters.

Heh  :)

Yeah, but you're playing nightmare w/o heals....  How in the hells can you do that??  'Hard' mode is about my limit, especially down in the Roads (which I always do last).
