Sadly, planet scanning is the one wart this wonderful game has. Fortunately there are lots of hacked .ini files around and a save game editor to let you bypass this nonsense.

Not if you play the game on XBOX!

The Mako was pretty cool at first, but the lack of variety took it from cool to boring pretty quickly.

Planet scanning started out as boring, and went to mind-numbingly-pull-your-hair-out boring just as quickly.

So Mako based exploration is an interesting concept suffering from poor execution, whereas planet scanning is just a horrible idea all around. I wouldn't miss either of them in ME3.

One thing I would do to aleviate some of the scanning boredom problems is have it unlock a element merchant someone where after the 1st play through. Then you could go to the merchant, trade elements you are short of or sell for credits. Often you find yourself with tons of 2 or even 3 elements and not enough of one.

Probe away. Probe launched. Probe away. Probe launched. Probe Away. Probe lunch! Mmmmm lunch..... I thought it was OK. I think finding side missions fun. Ac ouple of the planets to scan was fun, but some actual in your space car things would've been nice. I know the Hammerhead thing is comign out which'll be fun but for ME3 I'd like more of a mix of differnt types of adventure/ exploration or less planets. There's a difference between epic and just plane old long.

On the same token, you need the least of Element zero to upgrade.

The Mako was just outright frustrating to drive at times. The planet scanning is boring all the time. Six of one half dozen of the other.

To me, this is the only concrete terrible thing about the game.  It's not a terrible idea to require players to scan planets for resources.  It's the mechanics of doing it that are all wrong.  The ME1 instant scan would be better because the process of moving a cursor over a planet's surface gets old after about 3 minutes and then you have to spend a couple of hours more doing it over the course of your first play through.  It's tedious and not even remotely fun or challenging.  I'm sure it won't make it to ME3.

What I heard is that you were going to get a modified dump truck/MAKO where instead of scanning for resources, you drive around the plannet looking for piles of them. When you find them, you get out of the and play a "shovel simulatiion" to scoop the resources bit-by-bit into the back of a MAKO.  It's the game designer's revenge for us not liking the resource mining.

Yeah, it's a terrible idea, even more so that barring completion of the game beforehand, you need to do it to prevent casualties in the suicide mission.

But, then again, I just used a saved game editor. So I really couldn't care less. Still, sorry for you 360 people.

WORST idea ever. Add to that the removal of the cool hacking game from ME1 on the pc in place of lame preschool matching games.

Not that it would have made any difference in my opinion, my comp only crashed while scanning planets. Holy moly! Your comp can play ME2, but planet scanning is way ahead of its time. Maybe, in 2015 I'll have a comp powerful enough to do this "awesome" mini-game.

Best idea is only scan the resource rich planets as they will get  the best results much more quickly also i downloaded a planet list so that I know which ones have the best minerals and N7 missions.

They should've just done a Star Control II type thing where you can see exactly where all the resources are on a planet once you've done a preliminary scan, and then you can just grab them with probes or whatever.

At the very least, they should let you do something like that once you get that damn "Advanced Mineral Scanner" upgrade. I honestly thought my game was glitching on the first playthrough because the advanced scanner seemed to do nothing at all, and the increased speed was barely noticeable.

My six-year-old daughter refers to Mass Effect 2 and "the Matching Game."

I want to know what people thought of this what is everyones opinion on planet scanning?

I like the shooting, I like the story, I like flying around lossing fuel, but the constanst planet scanning for resources got on my nervs to the point. I started to stare at the wall while I watched the Screen and just feel the rumble of the dizzz to tell me what I was firing out a prob for.

I seriously think bioware needs to do a better job with the whole planet scanning thing. I like just clicking on planets like in the first one. It made the game go by quicker and I didn't feel like I was just waisting my time. I got to learn little about the planet and see if it had the resource or credit I needed.  I think that was a great thing about mass effect 1 just looked at planets learned a little and then moved on. Instead of waisting my time scanning a planet for a resource I filled up on about after 30 planets I scanned. I had more resource than I needed. Hell it didn't even help me complete the final mission the way I wanted. Posted Image

Scanning shouldn't take you too long, if you're only skimming the cream (i.e. probe only the biggest spikes). I actually enjoyed watching my 5 year old son scanning for me... It was easy enough for him and he never got bored with it. Posted Image

While walking around on the citadel, I caught an advertisement about a pawn shop that was purchasing "precious metals"... too bad they didn't put it in the game!

A great DLC idea would be to add a Volus Minerals Exchange where you could trade resources for credits or another resource of a different type with the exchange keeping a commission. That would further reduce scanning time to a level most players could live with, as well as provide an alternate source of cash for upgrades (or fish)purchases:

Trade 100 Resource A for 80 Resource B
Sell 100 Resource A for 60 Credits
Purchase 60 Resource A for 100 Credits

I adamantly disagree.  At least I can put on a headset and listen to music and be done with every resource I need in a few hours.  That mako crap just... doesn't....end!:pinched:
