Terrible lag in cutscenes/video, game freezes

I'm having terrible lag during the animated dialogues with NPC's. Currently I'm still stuck in the harrowing as the game freezes to a complete stop after I defeat the rage demon.

I've installed the lasted driver for my graphics card and tried setting my video performance to low - though I don't think that should be necessary - but nothing works. The cutscenes still lag like there's no tomorrow and it quite disappointing since the normal game - running, fighting etc. - works without problems even in the highest resolution.

Anyone have an idea what's causing this? As it is, the game is unplayable so any help is appreciated.

Spec:
OS: Vista 32-bit
CPU: Intel QuadCore 2.4GHz
RAM: 4 GB
Graphics Card: Geforce 8800 GT 512 MB RAM

I had serious issues with my 8800GT. What fixed it was downloading the Riva Tuner and upping the fan speed. The default speed set by NVIDIA is way too low! I upped it to 50% and had much better game play, but it still ran a little high in temperature. You may want to make sure your PC temp isn't too high. I eventually upgraded to a Radeon card but that was a personal choice and had nothing to do with the game. Even with the upgrade it runs a little higher than I would want it to with this game, but it's within "safe" numbers.

I have tried that - installing the Riva Tuner that is - and increasing the fan speed. Unfortunately that doesn't help, the game still freezes during the NPC dialogue/video cutscenes.

Is there a confirmed problem with the 8800-series?

Small update. I've tried turning off the sound as I read in another thread that it might be a problem there. I've tried rolling back my drivers. I've tried setting a higher priority for DAO process and I've tried switching off one or more of the CPUs as I read that that also might be the problem. So far nothing helps.

Have you recently started to get these problems - or have you had this from the day you bought it?

I only got the game this week, so the problems have been there all along for me. The furthest I've got in the game is the opening - The Harrowing I believe it's called - on my mage. During the final cut scene/NPC dialogue the game freezes. Until then there are a few stutters but nothing major.

It's patched to the latest patch and I've installed the three DLC's

The reason why I asked is that this only started for me recently, before I had played though two complete characters with no error or problems at all. I found the only way to push past this freeze was to drop back to windows - then bring it back up.

To start with I thought it was my graphics card overheating - I've since done a load of tests and found even after 6 hrs playing it never went above 79C.

I'm beginning to wonder if this has anything to do with the latest update Bioware did to their server as my problems started that same day. Try disabling all online options and not logging in and see if that makes a difference, I know that will also stop you from playing the DLC but it will alow you to see if it is a computer problem or Bioware.

Will try that and report back. Thanks for the pointer.

I've tried your suggestion but unfortunately that didn't help. The problem is exactly the same as before.

I'm sorry I was hoping that would work for you - I only have one last suggestion although I'm not sure this will help either - but its worth a shot.

If you've not tried it already - on the load screen, click on the configure tab, wait for the scan to finish, go to repair - then click the 'add firewall exception' and the 'clear download cache'.

I can't think of anything else other than the standard stuff you probably already know.

That didn't work either, but thanks for the help. Guess I'll have to shell out for a new graphics card and see if that fixes the problem. Have my eyes on a Radeon 5850 which should be enough until it's time for a new computer. :(

greetings... I have been playing DAO for some time without any problems at all, graphics maxed and having a great time. Suddenly today I started having the same lag issues on cut scenes. This i a new development after a good month of playing, so I doubt it is a system issue.  I also recently downloaded RTO, so maybe that is the culprit.

I found my problem... I've been going through the tutorial for the toolkit and the unfinished module was active. I went into downloaded content and deactivated the tutorial module and all is well. Don't know if this helps, but good luck to you.

What is going on here? I've been reading several posts over the last few weeks where people have only just started to get problems, stuttering cut scenes and crashes (mainly in Denerim). To start off with I thought it was my graphics card but I've since found that its not.

How can people start to have issues when before there was none!! I never changed a thing when my game started going wrong.

I just went back to DAO after playing ME2 I finished the game before and wanted to play a new arc. Well before I had no cutscene issues and smooth game play. This time it is choppy in cutscenes and in game play from time to time. I know it is not my PC as not a thing has changed with it. But i did download RTO. I hope that isn't the issue.

I disabled RTO and noticed a improvement in game play. Maybe this is why they held back on putting it out and couldn't fix it. I guess I'll have to deal with the issues since I want to play RTO. Damn...

Well I upgraded my video card to a Asus Radeon 5850 and now everything is running smoothly. Seems like the Nvidia 8800 GT isn't quite up to the task.

I started having this problem yesterday. It seems in my case it was related to me using the toolset and probably breaking something. I've had the game since launch and thankfully had no problems until this weekend. I deleted my addins and so far it seems to have solved the problem.

I Also have this issue. I have a Nvidia GTS 7950. This only started recently. and the 1.03 update did not fix it. This happens anywhere not just the harrowing for me. no matter what video options I choose this happens only at cut scenes that i can select a reply. if the cut scene does not need a reply it plays through just fine. Any Ideas Bioware?

I also have this issue. ATI 3450 graphics card. If I act quickly, I'm able to make it just past the loading screen post-Harrowing before my game grinds to a halt.

Folks (Bioware), my game is unplayable here. We need some resolution to this not later but now.

Just out of interest, why should they fix this?

It doesn't run on my laptop - is that their fault?

You must be joking. System requirements are met.

If the game didn't work on your laptop/desktop, wouldn't you feel like you just wasted your money?
