Something tells me far enough into the future we'll have the technology where a habit such as smoking would have little to no ill effects on the human body.

Hell, they did rebuild someone who was spaced, frozen, burned in an atmosphere...

edit: spelling terror!

Who cares if there is smoking in a game? Especially with someone like The Illusive Man, I cant imagine him not smoking.

Really?

Why the hell would an incredibly wealthy, incredibly powerful, incredibly purposed man smoke?
Smoking is so obviously a vice of a poor or troubled person.
The illusive man is neither.

Only poor or troubled people smoke?

That's obviously not true.

Indeed. Whats even more disturbing is to think that the poster you quoted thinks being wealthy and powerful rids you of all stresses. I don't think running a corporation like Cerberus is all sunshine and kittens.

I love that finally we're seeing representations of smoking in popular culture that are not purely villainous.

They may be completly harmless cigarettes with no nicotine. Maybe they've cured cancer. It's the future. Unless it's explained, you can't assume what they are smoking.

It is pretty dumb that they made him smoke.
It is also dumb that they passed off smoking onto other species, as if they would roll tobacco like humans.
What is more likely is that they have their own, strange vices, and humanity probably out-lawed tobacco anyway.
Pretty dumb overall.

Smoking is not so obviously a vice of a poor or troubled person.
Smoking feels good if you're addicted.
And the illusive man probably smokes just because he can.
The modern medicine of the time probably found a way to be able to prevent the side effects of smoking.
So he can pretty much take a hit whenever and feel good. He's got nothing better to do.

Yes, only poor people smoke. That's why there is a failing market for things like these: http://www.topcubans...o-extra,484.htm

I think there is a Batarian smoking in a cut-scene. I like how realistic it is. People smoke and in 150 years people will still smoke. I am surprised you didn't see more people smoking on Omega or on Ilium.

Why is it weird that people smoke?

I'm pretty sure alot more people smoke in real life than in this game, so I personally think not -enough- people were represented as smoking. Even in the clubs!

EDIT: Ninja'd by 55percent. Beat me to it.

You think this is bad?  Play Metal Gear.  You can light one up at any time!

It actually struck me as odd to see those few who are smoking to be doing so at all. I'm not sure what Bio was getting at with adding it, aside from perhaps trying to relate to current cultural norms. It didn't strike me as being part of the ME universe. I'm sure they could have had them killing themselves in some other, more interesting, way, being so far in the "future".

Well, to put it in perspective: The reason noone smokes in ME1, but a lot of people do smoke in ME2 is probably because the Citadel/Council Space Smoking Ban doesn't extend to the Terminus Systems. :P:whistle:

While smoking is pretty dirty, you can't deny its used as both a crutch and a common method of getting a drug into the blood stream. We have had the tech to make nicotine addiction easy and smokeless for about 20 years (actually far longer) yet people still use the combustion of a little phallus of plant material to get a hit.

Even though in the real world we are phasing out smoking in many countries I still think people will smoke, if only because its "bad".

My guess is like what others have said, IM is rich, powerful and we don't know exactly what they smoke in future. Plus Cancer is probably all but defeated if they can bring a man back from being dead for over a year.

On a clearly story note... as soon as modern western audeinces see a silhouetted man smoking alone (surrounded by a stark setting) we know he is up to no good and that he is powerful. :P

This thread beats all.

I had np with the smoking. It wouldn't have been the same if they'd showed the illusive man crunching on some celery and straining some carrots for a healthy drink.

People complain about no nudity and censorship, then we even see posts about a video game character who is already a borderline terrorist and mass murderer........not setting a good example by his personal habits. These are characters in a game, not example of good people, never meant to be.

Its just one of those new radical changes they put in ME2.

Actually, I remember that scene and I thought that it looked good too, but that was a batarian on a **** hole planet. I still think that they’d have different vice light years away in the terminus systems.

Yes, smoking is more common among poor men.
Sorry if you don’t like the data.
The illusive man wouldn’t smoke, or drink.
That is all he does is smoke and drink.

I didn’t know we were looking for morals.
I thought we were examining the flaws in the presentation of the illusive man.
I don’t think that smoking is bad, or drinking.
Are smoking and drinking bad to you, is that why you think that the illusive man would do them, because he’s bad?
