Really?

Why the hell would an incredibly wealthy, incredibly powerful, incredibly purposed man smoke?
Smoking is so obviously a vice of a poor or troubled person.
The illusive man is neither.

It is pretty dumb that they made him smoke.
It is also dumb that they passed off smoking onto other species, as if they would roll tobacco like humans.
What is more likely is that they have their own, strange vices, and humanity probably out-lawed tobacco anyway.
Pretty dumb overall.

That smoking is a vice of a poor or troubled person is totally stupid, first and foremost.

Second, it's odd how everyone compares the smoking of now to the smoking of ME2 and TIM... This I do not get.

It's the year 2185 if I am correct? And not only is it the future, but I would guess Cerberus has access to the collective technological wealth of dozens of species spread across the ENTIRE galaxy, including technology gained from the Citadel, Relays and what not.

So, considering they can bring people back to life (At a considerable exspense) and even include augmentation in that process. It's easy to assume that TIM may have used simular technology to extend his life span or even just improove his overall health, ensuring smoking posses no threat.

I can't back this up with evidence, save for, LOOK at his EYES.
  • Smoking may not pose a danger for TIM because he probably has the best private health insurance in the galaxy.
  • It may be a plant from another world in which there are no dangers to health.
  • The Salarians genetically sterilised the Krogan. They could genetically alter a plant to not only be SAFE to smoke, but would actually IMPROOVE health.
As for other smokers in ME2. Most I run into live on Omega. Smoking is the least of peoples worries on Omega.

Context people. This is HARD Science Fiction. Look at the Codex. Everything is well thought out and contains a history. [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/tongue.png[/smilie]

Yes, smoking is more common among poor men.
Sorry if you don’t like the data.
The illusive man wouldn’t smoke, or drink.
That is all he does is smoke and drink.

Where do you get this data?  Personal experience doesn't count.  And I'm being serious, not baiting or trolling, I want to see you support these statements.

Another thing I've noticed, is that Shepard doesn't smoke. And the Illusive Man smoking is just so perfectly suited to his personality, it adds a layer of mystery.

Is nobody complaining that you can do shots of whiskey repeatedly and get drunk? Way to represent humanity Shepard!

Smoking just fits TIM's character. Or maybe it's just because we've seen it.

And yeah, you can drink quite a bit.

Man, just keep 'em coming in the Citadel.

You can get some of the good stuff.

I had np with the smoking. It wouldn't have been the same if they'd showed the illusive man crunching on some celery and straining some carrots for a healthy drink.

Dunno, the Illusive Man as a wild and crazy health nut?  "Shepard.  We reassembled you.  Miranda, bring us smoothies with extra wheat germ."

...I think I may have to use that in something of my own, sometime.

Doesn't anyone remember the all knowing Cancer Man from the X-fliles? Mysterious and powerful man at the center of many conspiracies... and he chain smoked. He was the first thing I thought of when I saw the Illusive Man.

As for rich and smart people not smoking... hahaha... poor stoopid people might buy a larger percentange of the tobacco products produced, but that's only because there are lot less of the rich and smart variety. Obama smokes, a majority of congressmen smoke, so do a lot of the so called 'buisness elite'. Because nothing says "I don't give a f^ck.", like lighting up a smoke, taking a nice drag and blowing it in the other dudes face...

Yes, let's do like Hollywood does and pretend that over 30% of the world's adult population doesn't smoke.

People smoke, so a game wanting to depict people realistically should have a smoker or two.

And I know of only one smoker in this game, and without spoiling anything too much, I wouldn't consider that guy to be all that much of a protagonist or a "good" guy, so I don't see the game as condoning the act of smoking. If Shepard lit a cigarette after every fight he/she was in, I could see people having a reasonable complaint, although I personally think that'd be ******* hilarious.

Who cares if there is smoking in a game? Especially with someone like The Illusive Man, I cant imagine him not smoking.

You obviously don't understand the Illusive man's character.  He likes those vices (smoking and drinking) because he represents some of the worst aspects of human nature.

The cigar smoking Elcor cracked me up. And I usually lit one up with the Illusive man. It doesn't bother me since I smoke. I guess I can see how a church going right wing or California health nut would get offended. But its an easy was to add character. And its sort of like a black cowboy hat, or a Russian accent.

So what BioWare is really saying is, if you're going to become the shadowy head of a secret human-centric organization with more money, resources, and loyal supporters at its disposal than most galactic governments, go ahead and light up.

Too much FO3 influence? First it was the excessive gore in DAO and now the excessive smoking in ME2.

The guy repairing the Armored Plane on the Archangel mission was also smoking. Shepard had to even brush away the smoke with his hand.

Hey, at least it isn't one about the Dr. Pepper machine guns, gripes from RPG purists, opinions on how to make ME2 a better RPG, and downright bashing of the game that's been streaming through the forums lately. Image IPB

I appreciate the occasional changeup.
