Who cares if there is smoking in a game? Especially with someone like The Illusive Man, I cant imagine him not smoking.

Really?

Why the hell would an incredibly wealthy, incredibly powerful, incredibly purposed man smoke?
Smoking is so obviously a vice of a poor or troubled person.
The illusive man is neither.

It is pretty dumb that they made him smoke.
It is also dumb that they passed off smoking onto other species, as if they would roll tobacco like humans.
What is more likely is that they have their own, strange vices, and humanity probably out-lawed tobacco anyway.
Pretty dumb overall.

You obviously don't understand the Illusive man's character.  He likes those vices (smoking and drinking) because he represents some of the worst aspects of human nature.

Oh, OK.

Doesn't anyone remember the all knowing Cancer Man from the X-fliles? Mysterious and powerful man at the center of many conspiracies... and he chain smoked. He was the first thing I thought of when I saw the Illusive Man.

As for rich and smart people not smoking... hahaha... poor stoopid people might buy a larger percentange of the tobacco products produced, but that's only because there are lot less of the rich and smart variety. Obama smokes, a majority of congressmen smoke, so do a lot of the so called 'buisness elite'. Because nothing says "I don't give a f^ck.", like lighting up a smoke, taking a nice drag and blowing it in the other dudes face...

I guess so.

Yes, smoking is more common among poor men.
Sorry if you don’t like the data.
The illusive man wouldn’t smoke, or drink.
That is all he does is smoke and drink.

This player also finds the OP rather amusing. In particular:

I didn’t know we were looking for morals.
I thought we were examining the flaws in the presentation of the illusive man.
I don’t think that smoking is bad, or drinking.
Are smoking and drinking bad to you, is that why you think that the illusive man would do them, because he’s bad?

You are examining the flaws in the presentation of the Illusive Man. I see. So, you are examining the flaws in a finished character, in a finished presentation. A character designed not by you, but by someone else. A character, that was depicted by his writer(s) to be as he was shown in the finished product.

Now, there are some character developments in games and movies and books that are up to debate, in particular established characters that have a history. One roller coster ride alignment change of a particular figure in a particular setting that particulary burnt my brain could be named now, but no.. let's not.

However to think that your argument here has any ground whatsoever, based sorely on YOUR opinion on how a character, a person, should be---well, I can't quite wrap my mind around that.

It's like saying: "Indiana Jones should not be so obsessed with his hat. It serves no purpose and he risks his life on at least one occassion to retrieve it." or "Gandalf should not smoke his pipe, it will kill him!"

Yes.. what's with all the pipe smoking in Lord of the Rings? I mean, come ON! It's such a bad representation of a wizard (powerful and wise as they are) to be smoking. Bad, bad BAD characterization. Put that pipe down RIGHT this instance, it does not fit your character!

Crowd chanting "Cancer Merchant, Cancer Merchant !"

As a rich and succesfull man who likes to smoke and drink and doesn't give a hoot about other people's views and is not interested in living to be 125 I appreciate the smoking and boozing ingame.

Oh, and hobbits are EVIL because they smoke (and there are some subtle hints it's pot as well in the books :))

I'm not the OP, am I?
Anyway
I'm glad you are amused.

I don't see the value of your post, seems like you just want to contradict me.
Obviously, my writing reflects my opinion.
A character doesn't need a backstory to either fit, or not fit, with established characters.
I'm sorry you can't wrap your mind around it.

Anything else?

I remember getting asked for a smoke from someone at Noveria in ME 1.

So this is not a new thing in the ME universe.

I must admit the smoking in ME2 annoyed me and having just about the most powerful human in the universe a smoker is a little bit of a bad example, but no worse than a lot of things in the game.

It did fit his character though, and I look forward to snuffing both him and his cigs if ME3 lets me be that renegade .... I doubt it.

From what I noticed, no body in the Alliance smokes

Shepard! You smoke? Don't. That stuff'll kill you. Knew a kid once. Arms dealer, probably half your age. Smoked too close to a cash of explosives. Tossed a butt, blew himself sky-high.

I like how everyone assumes that people in the game are smoking cigarettes.

It's the future! I'm sure they have things to smoke that are non-harmful and enjoyable. It doesn't have to be a "vice". Besides, only 3 characters are seen smoking anyways...

I'm pretty sure getting shot at every 4 or 5 seconds is more dangerous then tobacco products...
