Life is dangerous. You can get cancer from everything. If we spend all our time protecting ourselves from it, when do we get to live life, exactly? While eating a carrot? Or running another marathon?

I've seen smokers live to be a hundred and health-fanatics drop dead at 25 from cardiac arrest. Life holds no guarantees.

I don't share your view on life but that is one hell of a statement and very accurate in a Darwinian sort of way.  I would guess you would play lawful evil in your RPG gaming.  Vermin  ...... so descriptive and nasty.  Such artistic malice.

Running a marathon is actually a very fullfilling, rewarding experience.  Extremely exhillerating.  I pity the fat slobs who will never be able to experience the thrill of completing one.
Living healthfully is not hard.  You don't have to go out of your way to do it, rather you just incorporate it into your lifestlye.
The foods I enjoy are foods which are healthy and the activities I enjoy are activities which are good for your health such as hiking, white water river rafting, mountain climbing, weight lifting etc.

Just because there are risks in life is no excuse to avoid living as fullfilling a life as possible.

I do, but i was not thinking of relationships you could trigger as a persona, but rather the relashionships you could witnessbetween NPCs during the course of the game. Apart from strippers, either in the first or second ME.

I guess you can say that my views are superficially similar to eugenics except I believe that we should judge the quality of a human being based on their actions rather than any traits they were born with.
Somebody who deems it acceptable to engage in socially destructive behaviour whether it be drinking, lazyness, eating unhealthy foods, or having sex with anything that moves is someone who should not be allowed to propagate their poison to their offspring.
I only wish smoking harmed human fertility.  It can cause erectile dysfunction in men due to increased blood pressure but I think tobacco companies should add arsenic or mercury to it.
Of course they wouldn't because the tobacco companies need new customers to replenish.

Borschbeet, I guess I can respect your position on healthcare and I do agree with it to some extent. To be honest, I am not sure where I stand on that issue. I am more leaning towards helping out the jobless, homeless, and unhealthy at expense to myself being the best solution. My last post I was angry because you made it sound like you wanted to genocide a very large portion of the population for no other reason than so you would not have them be a burden. I wonder what you think about the eugenics movement in the 1960s? I dont undertand why a smart person such as yourself would refer to all smokers as "vermin". I could get into the whole idea that smoking hurts the self and and therefore is not unethical in the same way that suicide is not unethical but I dont think this post is for that. I dont think a persons soul is deelevated to the level of less than human if they smoke a few cigarretes. I dont think I need to name all of the important historical figures who smoked knowing the risks.

As for mass effect, I think it is realistic that a few characters smoke and I am ok with seeing that. I think it would be a little too riske if shepard could choose to smoke and unecessary. TIM smoking is a great touch however.

No, of course I don't think everyone should.  If everyone had the desire to live a healthful active lifestyle and the willpower to actually follow through on it, humanity would be in much better shape than it is today.
People aren't perfect.  Every demographic has it's portion of trash and smoking helps take out that garbage so the good people don't have to be bothered with the blight human garbage like smokers and fat people impose on society.

With that said, I'm going to eat lunch and then go to the gym.  Farewell.

Why is it that in video games, TV shows, and movies you can rip people's spleens out, have orgies, mainline heroin, eat babies, cuss until you're blue in the face, and violate just about any tenet of good taste there is but the second someone lights up a cigarette, the very ground shakes from the whining?

For the same reason that people dont talk about Christianity vs. Islam in a game. Because its an issue that effects more people that play the game. Smoking is just a bigger more sensitive issue to many more people than eviseration and having orgies with blue aliens. But really people complain because they are insecure. many people probably feel guilty about smoking or maybe have lost loved ones to emphasema etc. which understandably would be awkward for them.

There is some sad truth to what you say, but I ask you:  If intelligence, critical thinking  and moral unambiguity are such valuable and all important traits, why doesn't everyone have them.  Genes only have meaning in the context of other genes, the entire being, the local environment and the global environment.  There is a whole world of post genetic variability in a human being.  I have two brothers who are genetically identical twins.  One smokes and drinks and is now a little over weight,  and the other is the exact oppostie and has views similar to yours. One gene can have many effects, "positive" here "negative" there and are modified by a myriad of internal and external forces.

Sadly many people suffer from the actions of others.  I personally know
someone in their 30s who caught an STD from the second person they had
sex with in their life,  even though they insisted on STD testing months before
anything started.  Their partner simply lied about the test.. Natural
selection is a very blunt hammer.   Many make very poor choices but many
have to choose the lesser between a number of poor choices. Many have
poor choices thrust upon them.

Personally, I think a world full of your ideal people would self destruct even quicker than what we have but of course that is my opinion. In the far future is may be possible to screen out all these effects and
make a "ideal" human being that is designed and created as opposed to being a product of the evolutionary process.  That would depend on whether the designers are better qualified than the process of natural selection-evolution.

I don't personally condone nor condemn smoking, or smokers. The practice is thousands of years old yet it's only in the last 15 years or so that these 20-30 something Emo gym-rat morons like the one a couple of posts above start trying to legislate and criminalize it, while crying at the top of their lungs about how it disturbs their personal space. For people at this point to need to invent yet another way to make themselves feel superior to other people is pretty pathetic at this point, and does speak to what you said about their own insecurities. But the hypocrisy has become highly irritating and fatiguing.

This is in the same vein to me as the hordes of people that want someone who kicks a dog to go to the electric chair but then sit around laughing and calling Greenpeace self-sacrificing idiots because "who cares about whales".

There need not be anything "awkward" about smoking in media unless people can't tell reality from fiction and decide there needs to be a problem in everything. Although not on your part, that whole angle is another copout of a weak, thin skinned society headed up by the Politically Correct, most of whom should be eaten by bears, somewhere where I can obtain proper lighting for video. And ironically enough, I will be able to show their deaths on network TV, marathon-style, and nobody will have a problem as long as the bears don't pull out a pack of Marlboros.

Actually that makes a whole lot of sense. All the way down to the name, he's kind of the same thing to Shepard that Smoking Man was to Mulder, more or less. A secretive guy with an agenda and knowledge of bigger things that would change everything if they ever got out.

Next to The Man From Another Place in Twin Peaks, Smoking Man was one of my favorite "weird" characters.

I want my - garmonbozia ("pain and sorrow")

I totally agree with everything you said. My previous comment was just to tell it like it is without my own opinion thrown in. I agree with the hypocrisy aspect involved with the elitism and self serving attitude of, as you so poetically labeled, "emo gym rat morons". People like the marathon guy above, who would hate on the suposed "burdens on society" of smokers will gladely take out insurance if they need it for there own interests. Marathon runners are statistically at an extream elevated risk for knee problems and joint failure. Who do you think will be paying for said guy's knee reconstructive surgery if the time comes. Maybe he pays maybe he doesn't, regardless, he is blessed to live in a society where he can get the care he needs. If he wants to be part of the system he needs to put in and quit hating on all the fat cig smokers he so vehemently hates because that person believes their lives posses no intrinsic value worth saving because they dug their own hole. Its a compassion issue really along with self-referential insecurity and sense of self entitlement. Some people dont understand that personal space works both ways. In an ideal world everyone could make their choices and love would overcome these shortsighted barriers that divide people. No one would be complain about others and people would just give each other enough space. People would support one another regardless of any disagreements about things. Compassion is the great equalizer in our world.

Also, of course you are right about the imbalanced agendizing promoted by the Politically correct police. Some people don't understand that their own code of morality and ethics is just an opinion and wish to impose it on others. Many of these people are just silly children but some are also strait-up, down and dirty facists. Sometimes, the truth is scary, so people try and restrict the flow of information because they think living as some kind of delusion is an improvement to facing reality as it is. People will try and censor everything, from clothes to violence to porn to drugs etc. They dont understand that human problems are caused by human nature's interaction with nature. These problems will never be fixed because they are caused by ultimate truth, that which is what it is. Humanity will think and evolve according to this truth regardless of any attempted barriers or denial of the facts. My philosophy at its core is live and let life, accept the bad with the good and seek knowledge from love. Also play lots of videogames, YOU MUST play videogames or your life is invalidated (sarcasm).
