So with our 11 squadmembers, I have some that I would not like to reappear, either due to plot or my hatred of the character. Here is my breakdown of our squadmates.

Garrus: A must return. As the story has continued, he has become much more of a badass, and I feel like he is my Shepard's best friend. I feel like he too is loyal to me, and would want to return. I mean...he's come this far...why wouldn't he?

Tali: A similar situation to Garrus. I love the way the writers developed her, making her more mature and assertive in certain situations, while retaining her qwerky manorisms. She was my romance, and I assume she will return. (sidenote, I was not going to leave Liara, but she had changed for the worst. Oh well, her loss)

Thane: My new favorite character. He seems to really like Shepard, however his impending illness could prevent him from returning. As much as I would like he and Shepard's relationship to continue, his life may end regardless.

Samara: I also enjoyed Samara's character. She brought some much needed maturity to the team, and was very level-headed. I would enjoy seeing her return, but due to her character, I feel like she has much "bigger and better things" to attend to with her Justicar duties.

Grunt: I tried to kill him on the last mission, but somehow failed to do it. I can't stand him. He is childish and wild, not someone I want on my ship at all. He doesn't take orders well enough from me, and he strikes me as an idiot. Regardless of this, I bet he will return because Shedpard is now his "clan leader" or what have you. He can stay in the basement and rot for all I care, unless he decides to grow up.

Jack: I somewhat enjoyed her character, just to see how messed up Bioware could make someone. She was a very, very hurt girl and had an interesting past. She and my Shepard don't get along, but she serves well. As a romance option, I bet she returns to fight with Shepard.

Zaeed: He's a cool guy, I actually like him a lot. But there is no chance of him returning. He and Shepard are NOT close and he's a hired gun. He'll be finished soon.

Legion: I don't trust Legion yet. I still havn't bought his story, but man, what an interesting character. I love talking to him and hearing his answers to questions. I bet he stays because he is full of valuable information. Plus, he has some sort of affection to Shepard, and I feel like he wants to stay.

Miranda: She really likes Shepard a lot toward the end of the game and generally trusts him. I assume she will stay a main character through this game. She had a compelling story, and to continue the story of Cerberus, she will be necissary.

Jacob: He's a nice guy and all...but I didn't like him. He was not interesting...but his father was. That was a major flaw in his character. Plus he dislikes Thane...and that doesn't fly with Hayden Shepard. I'd rather have Kaiden back anyway...good ol' voice of reason. I don't think Jacob will return because he will get fed up with Cerberus and leave.

Mordin: He was a very interesting character, I absolutely loved the way he talked. I figure he will return to fufill the same role he did this time. He too really likes Shepard and was the most valuable asset to the team.



So there it is. I have a hunch Liara and Kaiden/Ashley will also return as squadmates which is fine with me. They were all great characters..

Overall, Bioware did an excellent job at writing their new characters. I guess I just hate Krogans.

Thane: Should return, as a matter of like/dislike, will NOT return, as a matter of storyline/character development.



Zaeed: Meh, and will not return.



Jack: Please don't return, might return.



Legion: Should return, although I'm not certain if he will.



Jacob: Should, and probably will return.

I think everyone in ME2 should return if they lived. They should give that as a bonus to us for playing the game. Maybe they should give two choices of squadmates for ME2. The ones I want to return really badly are Garrus and Tali. Like the OP said, I feel like he's Shepard's best friend.

Thane, Samara, and Zaeed probably won't return as squadmembers... As for everyone else they probably should return since there's no reason for them not to be there. (Assuming they didn't die in the suicide mission)

I'd like to See Garrus, Tali, Legion, Mordin, Samara, Liara, and Ash back in ME3, Thane can come as but kaiden isn't welcome and neither are Zaeed or Jack.

Samara, she promised if needed she'd return. And I liked her.

Miranda I would like to see again, Im thinking theres more to her "father" than even she thinks.

Jacob can go get LOUD on the citadel or whatever. I could care less. Maybe Ill like him more if I do a femshep, cause playing as male shep his character just fell flat.

I think Grunt will return, but I also think that depending on your handling of Wrex/Genophage, he might not be an ally.

Legion, I expect to see back. In fact, Ill be very surprised if hes not a foe if you chose to give him to Cerberus. (virus rewrites him, geth aid reapers)

Jack, I... expect back, but can't think of why.

I think that Mordin and Thane are toast, even if they survived your game. Mordin was apparently pushing ripe old age, and Thane had his fatal disease..

BUT.

I would not be surprised to see Kolyat take Thane's place,
I'd be PLEASANTLY surprised if having Thane as a LI results in a different relationship with Kolyat than if you played male or did not romance him. (I have not played femshep yet, just have heard thane is an option.)

I want Zaeed back EXACTLY like he was done in this one. It was nice to see -one- character for who the whole thing was just professional business, and dangit, I liked his war stories. (and think all the hate for him not having a dialogue tree is silly, he's got plenty of lines and his character, while a bit cliche, still comes out.)

Lets see:



Mordin: He is my favorite character. Sort of wish there was a femShep relationship with him. I'd love to see him back, but unless ME3 takes place shortly after the ME2, I foresee him being dead due to Salarian life span.



Samara: Her character was interesting, but probably one of the more predictable and boring ones. She is pretty old in Asari years, and I foresee her moving on.



Thane: The dark and brooding type. I'd like to see him back, but his sickness may not let him.



Miranda: I liked her char alot. She seemed to become decent friends with my FemShep. I'd like to see her back.



Jacob: I never really took a liking to this char. He's okay, but not much flair. I'd be okay with him moving on.



Jack: I got to know Jack as a paragon FemShep, and I felt like they really became friends. I really like Jack, and would love to see her back.



Tali: Of course, I'd love to see Tali back. I dont' really plan to romance her, but she's still awesome.



Zaeed: Never liked this char from the moment I laid eyes on him. Could care less to see him back.



Garrus: My FemShep's best friend. I took him everywhere on my current char in ME1. Though he likes to calibrate his guns too much, I'd love to see him back.



Grunt: I liked Wrex better. More levelheaded. Then again, Wrex is older. Grunt is still funny and interesting, but I can see him moving on to join clan Urdnot. Though since we're his squad, he may stick around.



Legion: I haven't gotten him yet, so I have no opinion

Garrus and Tali are almost certainly in.

Ashley/Kaiden could be Squaddies or just regular NPC's.

Wrex will probably still be an NPC, but who knows.

Thane will be dead. Though his son may have a role.

Liara might return as a replacement for Samara, if so Samara will become a cameo.

Legion probably reintegrates back with the Geth collective, so all other Geth should have been given his memories by ME3.

Everyone else is probably in (provided they survive). I think Bioware will make all the ME1 squaddies recruitable in ME3.

Outside of personal preference, I'm going to go through every character and what I would expect (list order shamelessly stolen from OP because I was too lazy to remember them all myself). I assumed on the side of no one being removed because of final mission death. I end each reasoning with my expected probability of inclusion ON SQUAD,  not as a character in the story.

Garrus: To be honest, there's not much in the way of explanation for his character other than "it would be nice to have him as one of the constants". I'll give you that he feels loyal to Shep, but that's it. Still, since he drifted away in ME1 because of Spectre tryouts (and failed at that), and since his Omega squad is dead, he might stick with you for the sake of being part of a team, especially since he knows what's at stake. 80% probability, I figure.

Tali: I figure she's got the highest chance of any ME2 characters of returning, if only because of her loyalty quest. If exiled, as most people end up with, she has nowhere to go. If you got her acquitted with a Paragon check (like my super-duper 100% Paragon points Shepard), well, you're in the relative minority compared to neutral or Renegade Shepards. I expect that one way or another, they're going to have her AT THE LEAST as a shipmate. 90% probability, I figure.

Thane: The illness is a key component here. There might be some sort of cure found, but with Lazarus having been used, not much reason to have another medical miracle. I expect he'll pass away at some point during ME3, and won't be a playable squadmate at all. 20% probability, I figure.

Samara: Samara swore to help you fight the Collectors, with like a super-swear attached to it. She completed the thing that her oath encompassed, and also did the thing that caused her to become a Justicar (killed Morinth). IIRC, she said she wanted to go seek out more Ardat-Yakshi. 25% probability, I figure.

Grunt: (personal note: OP said he found Grunt childish... I actually found him remarkably mature, so much so that I was taken aback (and I, myself, had expected an adolescent-like brute)). Anyways, I don't see him going back to Tuchanka. We know that he sees Shepard as a battlemaster, and as Shepard wishes to continue fighting the Reapers, there's no reason for Grunt to stop following Shep's orders. 75% probability, I figure.

Jack: She even says "as soon as we're done, I'm gone". MAYBE she'll stay because of the massive threat, but I really doubt that she gives a s*** about anything but number 1. 30% probability, I figure.

Zaeed: Merc. He ain't coming back, at least as a personal squadmate of Shepard's. Might end up on an army somewhere. 10% probability, I figure.

Legion: May stay with Shepard for the sake of a plot device to communicate with the Geth. Also likely to stay because he wants to help stop the REAPERS, not the COLLECTORS. As such, I think he'll stay with Shepard. 75% probability, I figure.

Miranda: Pro-Cerberus ending, she's still your handler. Anti-Cerberus ending, you're her boss. Either way, she is likely to come back. As a full-fledge squaddie? Maybe not. 75% probability, I figure.

Jacob: Just a line-grunt, to be honest. Maybe for Anti-Cerberus ending, he'll stick with you because you're his new boss, but that limits his return to a major storyline decision of a ME2 player, which is far too situational. Still, pro-Cerberus ending might end with him still assigned to your squad. 60% probability, I figure.

Mordin: At age 50 (according to ME website), he is already pushing the age limit for Salarians to the brink. I'm sorry, but although I loved his character, I can't see Bioware basically pulling a John McCain ("he might die in service!"). May be the head of some anti-Reaper science team that dies in the course of (or before) ME3. 15% probability, I figure.

Live:

Wrex - King Krogan, enough said.

Grunt - Intense, funny, and a kickass squad member in battle.

Garrus - Badass Turian who's learned from Shepard not to take anyone's ****.

Tali - The cutest personality and most lovable character in the game.

Liara - She obviously still likes Shepard, and I look forward to helping her take out the Shadow Broker.

Thane - Awesome is the word I would choose to describe Thane. If I wanted to sit down and have a conversation with any of the characters, Thane would be the choice.

Legion - Will probably be key in getting the Geth to not go to war with the Quarians post-Reapers.

Mordin - They need to put a lounge on the Citadel for Mordin to flex the Golden Pipes.



Indifferent:

Zaeed - Meh. Not enough interaction to really care one way or the other.

Miranda - She's good looking and smart, but she's also a stuck up, woe-is-me, brat.

Jacob - Don't really care for him that much. Wouldn't care if he's back or if he dies or rejoins the alliance.

Samara - Justicars are cool, but she creeps me out a little bit.



Dead:

Ashley - ****.

Kaiden - Douche.

Jack - Hate her with an intense passion. I'm going to make sure she's dead in the ME3 upload.

Cast Members to Return

ME1:  Liara, Garrus, Tali, Ash/Kaiden    (4)
 
ME2: Jacob, Miranda, Mordin, Grunt, Legion (5)

Total of 8 (with interchangable Ash/Kaiden)

Either way, in order to wrap up this epic saga, this game should have an even more expanded so that it would allow for four reasons.

1. New comers have some characters that are brand new to the squad.
2. ME2 survivors that can become squad members.
3. ME2 squad members that die can be offsetted by new cast.

Someone needs to find out the maximum number of characters that could die without the Shepherd having to die himself.

The default new game should be the ME3 people with a few new comers to unlock.
the story continues in other words.

Therefore it'd make ME2 one of thos stories where it was important to have had those squad members survive. That doesn't mean it breaks the game, it just means it makes it harder for Shepherd to operate.

I'll be sure to get Zaeed killed next time around, he's a merc bum. Grunt is also lame and I don't want him on my squad but I suppose he strengthens the krogan. All the rest are great. Maybe Samara will come around in ME3 and let me do her.

The below commentary only counts if you took the time to save each of these characters:



Tali and/or Legion are near shoe-ins in terms of plot relevance.

One is studying the obvious Chekovs gun of Dark Energy. The other is your buddy with the Geth, whom happen to hate the Reaperes.

Miranda and Jacob would be useful to have around due to help with the Cerberus plotline.



If I had to pick characters who probably were not comming, Thane would be high on the list, given as how he's dying. Samara has work to do, but would probably return for a major subplot.

Zaeed is a DLC, and therefore a filler character, so his plot relevance is nill to begin with. I LOL at people who try and make him lead a group in the finale. He might show up as a bonus quest in part 3.



Of course, your second love interest is probably a shoe-in as well. Ash/Liara/Kaidan can't get mad at you for cheating if they never bother to show up, now, can they?
