I thought Zaeed would be able to handle it the first time, but he got Tali killed, so I reloaded and tried with Miranda. I'm not sure how BW decided on the people more capable than the others. Inspirational ability, maybe? Miranda's not inspiring, per se, but they know she's capable... though so is Zaeed.

Ah well. All I know is, that works. So long as everyone's loyal. Which everyone was. :D

That happened to me too, but with Legion. Hell if I know why Zaeed, who founded the freaking blue suns and lead from the front lines up to his betrayal, is somehow worse at giving covering fire then Garrus, who has been rogue for two years and got his whole team betrayed and killed.

Legion still seems like the "best" choice for the pipes. Geth, so not prone to physical discomfort, and an expert hacker/technician. Made perfect sense to me.

Shaft: Legion
First team leader: Miranda
Biotic protection: Samara
Crew guard: Grunt
Second team leader: Garus
I gave a speech.
Everyone was loyal.
Mordin died holding the line.

Thing is..I've read of people doing the exact same thing, make the same placements (heck, I had a friend do the same things, same choices, same loyalties, upgrades, etc) and having everyone live..

You took Grunt off the hold the line mission.   Grunt and Zaeed are two characters you want holding the line.  You should send someone else that isnt a bunker down in a hail of gunfire kind of person.   Ive sent Thane, and Mordin on the crew escort role and everyone lives.   You cant take guys like garrus, grun, zaeed off the line.

For hold the line, its not just the leader, but the characters in general you have holding the line.   Grunt specifically seems to be essential to that role, if you take grunt off hold the line, mordin will likely die.  loyal or not.  Its not 100% but there is a good chance mordin will bite it if you pull grunt off the line.

It's a matter of luck it would seem. I also had Mordin die despite being completely loyal and not being used as a specialist for the entire mission... It made me a sad panda... :(

You have no idea what you are talking about.

It's not luck, the answer is simple.

Who led you distraction team? If it wasn't Garrus or Miranda. Someone probably dies.

Also, who held up you're Biotic shield? If it wasn't Samara or I think Jack, someone dies.

Why does this happen you ask?

It happens because only certain people are the best at certain things. You are in charge, if you picked someone who wasn't the best "leader" or who wasn't the strongest biotic, or who wasn't the sharpest tech, People die.

It has NOTHING to do with luck. It has to do with how smart you are as a leader and tactician. No one died on my play through, why? Because I'm not stupid.

The reason Zaeed isn't a good leader is because if you listen to his stories, everytime he gets his team killed. EVERY. TIME. Why would you pick him to lead your team? Garrus on the other hand killed waves of mercs and took out criminals with his team. The only way his team died was Sidonis had to take Garrus away from the base while mercs infiltrated his hide out. Hmmmm maybe Garrus is the best choice?

Why do people search for a month old thread about the suicide mission and then bump it all the way to the first page?

Furthermore, why do people then respond to the month old posts instead of the new ones?

Look at the timestamp before you reply. Mordin and Thane probably died of old age by the time this thread was actually answered.

Legion : pipes. Dies when trying to shut the door at the end. Shot by random collector. Plan to use Jacob next time as he has Barrier.

Zaeed as team leader on first go because he is a seasoned soldier-leader. Miranda and Garrus with me. Zaeed keeps people alive.

Tali leads diversion team while Samara goes as biotic, once again Garrus and Miranda with Shepherd.
Tali dies when trying to close a door. Dies to gunshot by random collector (deja vu). Using Grunt next time because he wont die to being shot. Krogan make good diversions.

No clue for Legion if he's loyal. Take to long on opening the pipes? Jacob would probably be worse.

I'm amazed Zaeed worked, I've heard he's not good for team leader (I've always gone with Garrus for both teams leaders in two playthroughs)

Zaeed didn't work. The reason Legion died in the vent was because Zaeed was used as Fireteam leader in the first section.

If anyone other than a loyal Miranda/Garrus/Jacob is used as Fireteam leader, the tech specialist will die, even if it is a loyal Tali/Legion.

For the second section (Biotic Shield, another Fireteam leader), the Fireteam leader themselves will die (Tali, in Malificis' case) if they are not a loyal Miranda/Garrus/Jacob.

Zaeed was betrayed by his own men, who held him down while he was shot in the face by his supposed partner.

Garrus was betrayed, but only by one man, who tricked him into leaving so the mercs could come & kill Garrus' team while he wasn't there. The only reason Garrus' team died was because he wasn't there.

Garrus spent time in the turian military, then C-Sec, then with Shepard, & then spent two years on Omega leading a very successful team of anti-merc vigilantes. And then even without a team, he held off the mercs for some time before Shepard arrived.

Zaeed... yes, he co-founded the Blue Suns... but he sucks at leadership. And at working with others. He has spent the last two decades working alone... apart from the odd time when he has worked in a team & got the entire team killed (you can tell from "talking" to him that he's not much good in a team!).
