My entire compute freezes entirely and I have to force shut down. It happens every 10 minutes or so, no matter where I am or what I am doing.

And this only happens when playing ME2?

Yes, only ME2.

Navigate to the steam/steamapps/common/masseffect2/binaries folder and run the ME2.exe as administrator.

Edit: Typically that shoul not cause a hard crash, but give it a shot, other than that I would double check you heat sinks/air flow. Are you by chance getting a blue screen?

Tried that already but I'll try it again, nonetheless.

Airflow is fine and my temps are good, I don't believe it to be a temperature issue.

No, I am not getting a blue screen. Everything just freezes, I can't alt+tab or anything. The CPU LED on the front of the case doesn't indicate there is anything going on.

One other thing I should probably mention is that the game worked perfectly fine until this incident happened the first time. My MoBo crapped out on me for unrelated reasons so I had to replace my MoBo and CPU, although everything else is the same.

Many threads also report on this, so you're not alone, I myself experience exactly the same issue.

Interesting. It also happens in Mass Effect 1. Hope there is a fix for it.

Since you are overclocked, some thing i would double check on just to rule them out if anything else.

Instable RAM, or a bad module can cause this same issue.

If just 1 module has 1 small area thats bad, and thats where the game is writing it can happen in the game and non-existant for many other things.

Also, depending what RAM/Speed, timings, voltages, FSB strap etc you are using ...
NB voltage can possible be the culprit causing the same issue your experiencing when under stress.

It wouldnt hurt to let MEMtest +86 run a few hours to know for a fact.

IBT may be able to find something to in a shorter period of time, if its NB related (voltage) CPU, or RAM(voltage, timings).
Although if 1 small area of RAM thats causing it may not find it.  Memtest is more accurate.

Still... might be worth running IBT 5-10 passes. if it passes let MEMtest run overnight.

 Just a suggestion.

Mine is doing this as well. 955 BE AMD, Win 7 64bit , 4 gigs Ram, Radeon 4890.

It does it on both ME 1 and ME 2. Random as far as I can tell. Didnt do it on ME 1 until I updated everything recently (last patch, BDTS). Just occured on ME 2 15 minutes into the game. Comp is not overheated, I dont overclock. Screen just freezes, turns grey or a shade of black and thats it. I have to restart comp.

Overheating rarely locks up a computer - typically it will either CTD or BSOD or shutdown all together. 90% of lockups are caused by bad/failing RAM, corrupted drivers or even failing HDDs or heavily fragmented HDDs. On the off-chance that it is heat related it's probably your NB (which can also be under volted to cause a lockup) chip - an over heated GPU will more than likely cause the dreaded driver restart black-flickering-screen-of-death or if its the CPU reaching its thermal limit, shutdown.

Best thing to do first (in order to rule it out) is test that RAM. In windows 7 there is a built in Memory Diagnostics tool you can use. Also check to make sure the RAM it's on the QVL for your motherboard (if you built the system yourself) and that they are seated properly.

A freeze like you describe is indicative of a hardware problem.

There is a bug affecting me in the game which pushes my graphics cards into overdrive at certain points (triggered by many live-rendered cutscenes and all in-game video logs). If it's affecting you, and you don't have an adequate PSU, a lockup like you describe is a very plausible outcome.

Of course, you're also overclocking your CPU, and you should try running at stock speeds before ruling that out as the cause.

Nearly same system as mine. Win 7 64 bit, Radeion 4890, 6 Gigs RAM. My entire PC crashes every 5-10 minutes. I have tested my RAM with the Windows Tool. Maybe this evening I will try MEMtest to make really sure everything is ok. Also ME 1crashes on my new PC after all the Updates. I do not want tell what else I have tried until now (different graphic drivers, different video settings, game 2xreinstalled,...). It really frustrates me.

You find the big thread about this problem here:

Would be great to know which one you were talking to :P

ANyway I hope for a fix with this.. It sucks having the computer freeze up, it dosnt "crash" to desktop or turn of the computer, it just locks up with a still image of the last thing I did in ME2 (Walking/talking)
